Yes but with macOS locking down system files etc I highly suspect future Mac will run iPadOS instead, ditching all support of decades old of desktop software to unify everything into iOS, just without touch support on Mac.
thats interesting idea. That will be a tragedy just like Windows 8 and its tiles

I have a hard time understanding what exactly ipados is... This latest farce of an OS really shouldn't exist, as it is 99% MacOS.. Apple is confused.. It is so confused, it does not know what to call Mac's OS, Tahoe or 26.. Why the 2 names? We don't have ipados tahoe, or ipados 26...

Ipads are now touchscreen macs... or... what??

Every year, Apple is making iPadOS like MacOS and now, I dont see any differences and I wonder if they are still planning to combine iPad and Mac in different ways such as macOS on iPad OR Mac with touch screen?

a couple of years ago I had the same idea that Apple was confused. But now, I believe Apple is not confused at all. Apple is quietly working on replacing macOS with iPadOS, removing decades old of desktop software support. As for the name? Just treat it as a transition period before macOS is no longer relevant.

They won’t combine macOS with iPadOS. They will, very possibly, replace macOS with iPadOS and remove touch support once they go far down enough. Xcode full version will come to iPadOS. Terminal will be a thing of the past. Anything legacy in macOS will be completely removed. Users will no longer be able to distinguish iPadOS from macOS other than you can’t touch on Mac.

Well, yes, a touchscreen mac makes sense, a couple yrs ago, I needed to replace my ipad mini 2, and my 2013 macbook pro, so into the istore I go, I selected the ipad, the pencil, the keyboard, and totalled it all up, it was more expensive than the macbook air M1 8GB laptop, which I bought...

There I was trying to figure out, what exactly is what from what, if you attach a keyboard to the ipad, it is a mac for really nothing other than a worse OS.. So now with this new version, which OS is which? Ipads are functionally macs with a touchscreen..

A touchscreen MacBook actually does not make much ergonomic sense. As Apple has been doing adding more advanced functionality to iPadOS does make more sense.

A kind reminder that iPad DOES have a keyboard and mouse accessory. Yes you have to buy it but it’s there.

macOS will never happen as long as Apple continues the path of infinitely closing the gap between macOS and iPadOS without crossing the line. In fact, expect macOS to become iPadOS than the other way around.

It’s more likely that Apple will ditch macOS and install iPadOS on future Mac at some point, just disable touch support but keep everything as-is. Apple will never bring macOS to iPad but can and might bring iPadOS to Mac and deprecate macOS. Go figure.
Action speaks for themselves.

Yes because at its core iPadOS is STILL iOS with a fancy customised interface for iPad bigger screen and that’s about it. I’d argue macOS being replaced by iPadOS is probably more likely than iPadOS on iPad being replaced by macOS.
At its core, iPadOS and iOS are macOS.

Slide between iPads?
I meant slide to switch apps is there - thought the bar which indicates that you can slide has not been removed.
Slide between apps* the gesture does not work for me in iPadOS 26 (again, unless I manually switch to the single app only multitasking mode)

Yes, it makes no sense, but that is exactly my point, I don't think Apple knows what Apple wants, 2 teams, working against each other,

Ipads with keyboards are functionally the same as an macbook air.. 99% of the apps function the same across both devices.. With the way the new look is, it is getting damn hard to see how Apple is not going for a touchscreen mac laptop range.. Hard to see this not happen in 2026, 2027..

This is MS' answer. And it's really good

No. I've used it at work and it's ultra glossy. iPad Pros have a very aggressive anti-glare, with even the base non-nano model. The SP12" has a cheap 400 nit screen without any anti-glare, and probably hardening. Other than that, it's very nice, but you pay quite a lot for that. Fortunately, the upcoming business model will have anti-glare apparently.

I would say it's overpriced-very good if you are into glossy. Go for it.

iPadOS is the OS that runs on iPads.

The naming structure hasn't changed. The new one is MacOS 26 Tahoe, just like the old one was OSX 10.2 Jaguar.

No. iPads are large screen iOS devices.

macOS apps aren’t designed for the 11” screen of the standard iPad, or for iPadOS’s more limited memory management. macOS would burn through the battery pretty quickly.

I won’t say that Apple will never put macOS on an iPad, but it’s been 15 years since iPad was first released, and 4+ since they gave it an M-series chip, so I’m not holding my breath.
Except that my favorite ever Mac was the 11-inch MacBook

Uugh, this new math. I blame the DOE... Why the 2 names for Mac OS? It makes no sense? Call it Mac OS Tahoe, or Mac OS 26, not both, it will just confuse Apple staff..

But if iPad was more Mac like would you just own an iPad instead of a Mac?
Of course that’s why they have gimped the iPad functionality for so long, even though the processors are extremely powerful. They want to make sure that you need both an iPad and a MacBook.

It's MacOS 26 Tahoe just like it was MacOS 15 Sequoia or OSX 10.2 Jaguar.
So why did Apple Inc not use this same name for all the other OS, Ipad OS Tahoe 26? Why call it Tahoe, it breaks convention, when the ipad OS is not Tahoe.. I can only assume this was to prevent confusion between Ipad OS and Mac OS, but clearly they are merging..
