So why did Apple Inc not use this same name for all the other OS, Ipad OS Tahoe 26? Why call it Tahoe, it breaks convention, when the ipad OS is not Tahoe.. I can only assume this was to prevent confusion between Ipad OS and Mac OS, but clearly they are merging..
Because they only have given cat or location names to the Mac OS. Nothing has changed so why are you confused?

Of course that’s why they have gimped the iPad functionality for so long, even though the processors are extremely powerful. They want to make sure that you need both an iPad and a MacBook.
If ipad OS was a bit cheaper, and with the keyboard, pencil, cover, cost less than an macbook air, I am buying, but it is more expensive than a laptop, does less than a laptop, the ipad needs SD card expansion... Yet Apple refuses.. Why? You fill the ipad with video in about 90 seconds, then it takes 2 weeks to transfer... Apple is really confused..

I’m sure there are lots of people who only have an iPad. But those that want more powerful iPad software or want to be able to run macOS on an iPad most likely own both an iPad and a Mac. And Apple is just fine with that.

Why does it need an SD slot when you can just connect it with a USBC cable?

I am not, Mac OS 26 makes sense as a name, 99% of conversation going forward will be around saying "Mac 26.. " I have to use wikipedia to look up what year my OS came out, using High Sierra right now [it was 2017..] it makes more sense to use the date, as we are stupid humans...

So call it 26, problem solved and not confusing.

The previous multitasking efforts in iPadOS looked and felt like trying to awkwardly graft the feature on top of what was there to work with. With iPadOS 26 it really looks and feels baked in at the core and part of the foundation. Nice work Apple. I hope the coders get some nice bonuses.
We need to thank podcasters like Federico Viticci and Jason Snell. They kept beating the drum about improvements iPad software needed. Apple listened.

I feel like this is still completely pointless waste of hardware until I'm allowed to use it like a Mac for Parallels and development environments. I'm not using anywhere near the capability of the hardware on this half-baked iPadOS.

Sticking mac onto iPad hardware is a half-baked solution. There is no reason to have a touch first device in a dev environment. You need a keyboard. If you need a keyboard to do most of your work, get a Mac.

Terminal will be a thing of the past. Anything legacy in macOS will be completely removed. Users will no longer be able to distinguish iPadOS from macOS other than you can’t touch on Mac.
Many developers appreciate having Terminal. It's a way to get to the UNIX underpinnings of the operating system, and do things without the need to rely on a GUI. Getting rid of Terminal (or any other command-line interpreter) would mean cutting developers off from that valuable programming access. It doesn't seem likely, unless there is a better alternative.

I totally agree, the moment I stuck a bluetooth $1 ebay keyboard onto my ipad mini 2 back in 2013, I wondered what is this? An ipad or a netbook macbook? It sort of at the time did 90% of the same as the macbook, but the mac did video editing... It always felt a bit odd sticking a keyboard on the ipad, yes it makes typing better, but then why not just have a netbook macbook mini? It really goes really goofy.. I am not sure Apple knows exactly what or when or which or..

Nope. iPadOS is a direct derivative from iOS. iOS may have been built on the foundation of macOS back in the day but is now pretty much its own thing. In the end, iPadOS will displace macOS and unify the system together. Soon all Apple devices will be running on iOS.
You know that iPad was in development longer than the iPhone, right?

Because you have a single device which meets 100% of your needs.

I predict iPadOS28 will be able to run macOS apps natively.

Or, less likely but still plausible to me, iPad and Mac will merge, with Macs getting touchscreens, and iPadOS and macOS 28 being essentially identical, including the ability to run each others apps; but only the new touchscreen-enabled Macs will be able to run iPad apps natively.

Uugh, this new math. I blame the DOE... Why the 2 names for Mac OS? It makes no sense? Call it Mac OS Tahoe, or Mac OS 26, not both, it will just confuse Apple staff..
You may be right that it is confusing. But all recent releases have had a name and a number. So the concept of dual or parallel name/number branding is not new

Who uses the term "netbook" anymore? This is the most usage I've seen of that term in nearly 20 years in this thread. I had the iPad mini 2, 4, and 5. All were the same size and used the same compromised third party keyboard accessories. There is a reason Apple has never made one of these and will probably never make one. It's awkward and cramped. I think they have that bit pretty well figured out. The mini is more likely to be used single-handed and in portrait mode than any other iPad. It has distinct use cases. As such I used a keyboard cover probably 1% of the time and eventually ditched it for a simple cover and the regular Apple Magic Keyboard, which I still use with my iPads today, also not that frequently.

Two questions:
- Can you now turn off the iPad screen and keep using an external display?
- How is Preview different from the PDF reader in old Files?

If true, how are developers going to run the tools that they need to develop software? A good example: run VM software, run Linux containers, Xcode
