The responses in this thread makes up a lovely bucket of fail. It's amazing what people will say when they have no idea what they're talking about.

Does it matter who it started with? We are talking about Walmart, not General Merchandising Company out of Minnesota.

Please note, that my interference would have been limited to one post had not you and others felt the need to respond. Fact is, it happens. It does not matter how often, it happens and is more likely to happen at Walmart and stores that employ those who have limited knowledge of electronics.

Do you know what the term ignorant means? The combination of my experiences and the experiences of others which is readily available on the internet paints a clear picture of Walmart. If they had proper policies for returned items this would be a non-issue.

Ignorance implies I am lacking knowledge on the subject. However, with what I have given as evidence for my claim, I hardly think ignorance is the word that applies. I am sure that is the best insult you could come up with though, so don't worry about it.

Is the percentage notable? I am not sure really, but that is not what I claimed. Walmart's lackluster policies for returns make it more likely that you will be a victim. Shopping at a place like Best Buy gives you a much better chance that you will get what you expected. This is of course not to suggest this never happens at Best Buy, but when you return something there it is typically throughly inspected, or at least that is the impression the thieves have and they steer clear of Best Buy for rip-off jobs.

Disclaimer: I do not shop at Best Buy, nor do I work for Best Buy. This is merely an example.

You seem to be pretty ignorant of retail in general. Wal-Mart has a very liberal return policy. If you are worried about buying bricks or rocks it sounds like a personal problem.

Seriously, it sounds you read about this third hand and are using it to make an argument. You don't even know the actual facts about how this initially happened nor how wide spread it was or has been. In other words you are just making stuff up.

Every time I've bought a consumer electonic device from Wal-mart, I've never had any problems with them. Also, if you buy a device from Wal-Mart and get Apple care, you can take it to a local Apple Store for service. Wal-Mart is nothing more than a reseller. The only difference between the iPads they would sell and the ones Best Buy would sell would be which crate just happened to show up in their distribution center.

Really now? Is that as specific as you would like to be or would you rather disprove me? I would like that add that this is now the dumbest I have read this entire month. Congrats!

Facts:
1. There are tons of stories about Walmart customers not getting what they expected.
2. It has happened to me 3 times, which is why I will never shop at Walmart again
3. There is a reason people love Walmart's return. They will accept anything. They employ bumpkins who know nothing about electronics. I can go to Walmart right now, buy a brand new SATA HD and return an old IDE hard drive. Tell them it was incompatible with my computer and guess what they would do. Put it back on the shelf.

Go try it yourself and tell me if you ever want to purchase electronics from Walmart, or any B&M for that matter. I took a jab at Walmart since that was the topic of this thread.

Thanks for putting your foot in your mouth though. I am sure many others will come and laugh at your moronic comment.

You can find problems everywhere. I bought a Polar F11 fitness watch at Dick's Sporting Goods. Got it home and it didn't work correctly. I looked at the user settings and found that it was used and exercise programs had been recorded. I took is back and spoke with the manager. It should have been sent back to Polar when it was returned but no, it was put back on the rack. I bought a Garmin Nuvi at Circuit City which I was told had been the display model. The manager assured me everything worked, NOT! It wouldn't even hold a charge. Took it back and bought it somewhere else. I've personally never had a problem at Wal-Mart but anything is possible. If you take home a previously opened package (not factory sealed) without checking the contents (I'm not saying you did) then who is the idiot. Sales people in these types of stores are not paid a lot of money but at least they are working and not sitting home receiving my tax dollars.

I absolutely agree. I admitted that there are problems at any B&M in another post in this thread.

The scammers really are good these days. Shrink wrapping things back up themselves, lifting the seals and putting them back down as if they had never been opened. It really isn't worth buying from a B&M these days, and their prices are generally terrible anyhow.

I am not worried about buying bricks because I don't shop there. Thanks for the ever so clever "personal problem" bit, you really got me...

So what about what I have said makes it sound like I read about this third hand? Just saying it doesn't make it true.

Also, it was initially just a joke. But you folks had to take it seriously. This is where I could say "chill out," but instead of making assumptions about your state of mind over the internet I will simply walk away. Good day.

Why would you do that? Even if you don't want to buy it online where you can get it much cheaper, surely there are other stores near you that offer better deals than Walmart. When I went to Walmart (when I visited America) their computers have been overpriced compared to stores online.

In regards to the OP: I think Apple (and Walmart) will do very well from this. The people the will buy iPads (do not say women) most likely shop at Walmart and may not even have heard of the iPad and seeing it at Walmart will pique their interest.

I know that AT&T is not going to sell the ipad guarentee so I can that Wal-Mart will not be selling it. Apple is all about the customer experience with the purchase and use of their products - do you all really think they are going to put that in Wal- Marts hands?

If it is a big name consumer device (iPod, Wii, select HDTVs), they are the exact same device you can get at any other store. I buy my PCs directly from HP's website because I get discounts, and because I like the customization. But for other mainstream devices, if I didn't tell you it came from Wal-mart, you couldn't tell.

Wal-Mart is closer to my house than Best Buy and the Apple store.

The iPad is really Apple's cheapest product to date, in terms of the hardware you get. A 9.7 inch IPS panel display with multitouch glass, a custom built 1 Ghz processor, 16GB of flash memory, 802.11N wifi, and bluetooth 2.1. Also a 10 hour battery and a super thin design all for $499.

To be honest I was expecting $599-$999 price points but Apple really came through with it. I mean, the 1st gen iPhone had way less hardware but cost around $700 initially.

Exactly and it fulfills my need perfectly. A) I can have my graphic design
portfolio at the ready in an admirable, vivid format. (B) I have a portable
iTunes library on the go (a reason I have wanted an iPod Touch for
some time) (c) I can generate my 700-1000$ worth of monthly eBay income
auctions on the go without being desktop tethered. (d) nice web
browsing experience.

I think those looking for a netbook and go shopping at Walmart will be
enticed by the iPad. And I agree with everyone else, WalMart has an
excellent return policy. They will even take back a box of rocks. Liberal.
I've capitalized on their liberal return policy when I was a teenager, a lot.
^_^

Seriously though, the iPad will make me money. Right now my Mini makes
me money every time I click send in my email box. It'll be nice not being
glued to my seat. Also really nice having something a bit smaller than
a traditional Macbook. I've had a MBP a late 2009 model, and it isn't what
I need right now.

It'll succeed. A) The fanboy/girls will buy it, (b) the niche clientele that
will actually use it, like me, will buy it, (c) soccer moms and passerby's
and "viral marketing /word of mouth will sell it.

Apple's products are like influenza. Vastly contagious!
+1 for a netbook with no viruses.

Every iPod model as well as the iPhone is sold at Wal-Mart.

Selling it at walmart means the sales will be way up and availability will be way down. Few people walk through the apple store or at&t compared to walmart. This means most of us will get one about the time the Mayan calendar runs out!

on launch?

I would like to know this also. If they did I won't have to drive 1.5 hrs or less to an Apple Store in Richmond, VA. Though I'll probably end up going because the family gets see & wait in line more by going to an Apple Store on launch day.

lol Why is Wal-Mart carrying the iPad?
I personally don't shop there, only make fun.
But wow, I'm impressed, nice work Wal-Mart.

I'm not surprised. Walmart also sells the latest Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VRII lens that retails for $2400 and this is on my wish list later this year. :)

No Apple Store in my area so my first iPad will be from Walmart for sure.

 Never had any problems with buying Apple stuff at Wally's. I do wonder, though, if the demographic of the iPad and that of the typical Walmart shopper has much overlap.

You bet it does. I shop at Wal*Mart all the time, even to save a few cents. I'm retired, on a fixed income and every penny helps. But even those who are not retired yet are getting close enough to retirement are already starting to watch the wallet. Wal*Mart customers are exactly who will drive the sales of the iPad through the roof. People who don't even own a computer may want an iPad because of its ease of use and versatility. Add to that the fact that the majority of people in the world are in my age group, and I can hear the cash register ringing now...
I'll bet Steve Jobs can too.

you sure? cause when i buy things from other stores other than the manufactures. i usually have a problem when i need to do something with insurance. like they both say go back to the other store and i just go crazy.

typically because you bought the insurance from the retailer (or an insurance vendor specifically tied to that retailer's repair department).
[ If you have had the product for less than a couple of months more than likely that insurance is moot anyway because the manufacturer's warrantee is in play. Still may not mean you go back to that store though. ]

When you buy AppleCare you are buying it from Apple. A retailer may have sold you the box the AppleCare package comes in but your contract is with Apple.

Likewise with AppleCare, if you go to a repair department that does not have a relationship with Apple then they won't take Applecare either for a fix.

AppleCare typically has a much broader set of outlets ( Apple Stores plus Certified Repaired shops) to go to than just a single outlet.

I'm in management with Wal-Mart and we have received information that we will be carrying all models of the iPad. This will surely help sales of the device. The good news for me is when I buy mine I'll get my associate discount. :D

I'm not saying that you are lying, but it would be cool if you could post the letter or some evidence.

Your local walmart has a $2000 camera lens? My walmart barely stocks milk!

the brick in the box i assume was a shot at walmart for not looking in returned boxes of items to the store. so stuff is put back out for resale that is not what it should be. FYI this was a huge scam at best buy. never heard of it at walmart. anyway im pretty sure they check now. especially high end items like computers.
