Good riddance. On every single iPhone I had the mute switch always broke or ended up stuck with dirt or in a state where it was never either muted or unmuted. Most times I had to activate the accessibility button on screen to achieve muting.
This is a welcome change.

I hate to be one of those complainers over new things but why add a new button but remove the old ?

So someone like me that moves the mute functionality isn’t gaining anything ?

There are a lot of Situations in school and in work where your phone making noise can cause you a lot of problems. I love a mechanical, silent switch. That is hard to flip makes you feel secure.

I don’t use the current mute switch other than to keep it permanently muted. My Watch tells me when I get a call or text. Looking forward to more possibilities with the Action button!

If it's tap only, it's going to be just like the existing toggle for me, but less useful since with the toggle I can see the current state.

If it allows long press, double press etc for different activities, I can see it being more useful.

Do you like this change?

F5yes95a0AAYmx3

If it has gestures similar to those present on earpods for many years, I will be happy.
The ability to get more features based on the number of cliks is definitely a step up from having to unlock your phone, open the menu and choose the feature.

Am I the only one who prefers the mute switch? Maybe I’m old but I actually have the ringer on when I’m home. This smells like a gimmick to detract from the fact that this isn’t all THAT much of an upgrade.
Nope, but I am excited about the Titanium.

What about using the action button as a shutter button in camera mode, and the volume buttons as zoom in/out?

Or, it'll make a useless mute switch something useful for those of us that keep our phone muted/unmuted at all times.

Not upgrading this year, but I'm still really excited for this change. I'm coming from Android so I don't have this expectation of a mute switch like many here. A customizable physical button that can do things like quick launch the camera is much better.

But Apple needs to stop bringing new UX/UI experiences to only the Pros. Just like it benefits apple to have everyone upgrade to the latest OS (instead of needing to support indefinitely all the older versions) it benefits them to get everyone as quickly as possible, using new software features like this (yes it is a hardware button, but the software needed to support it will be more complex than the mute switch). Same with the dynamic island, although I'll give that a pass since it was likely technically challenging to implement that cutout in the screen. But a button? Is a button so complex that you can't give it to ALL new iPhones so everyone can be on the same page going forward about the general inputs of the iPhone? This reeks of the same attitude that had the regular iPad being released with Pencil 1 support despite its redesign. Apple engineers need to start standing up to these marketing folks.

Because manufacturing costs.

Button is cheaper than switch. And that's it. They want to reduce costs, not increase them.

Oh man, they want reduce costs so they offer a titanium frame that cost much more then a stainless steel one or aluminum one🤦🏻
And a new display difficult and expensive to create so much so that BOE manufacture was unable to do it and all the production was entrusted to Samsung display.

It’s a popular narrative that _everything_ Apple does is to save cost and press more money from their loyal customers. It cannot possibly be to make the product better. Or at least attempting to make the product better. We will see how well the new action button will be received.

Hitting the action button once to open the camera and then again to take a photo would be great. Hitting the action button once and it immediately taking a photo, regardless of what app you were in, would be impressive.

Ooh, I like that. Instant photo button!

This is a stupid design choice. Steve Jobs and Jonny Ive could have done this years ago. It would have been cheaper. They decided not to. You are going to hear a lot more phones going off in meetings and concerts and movies and class and church and public transportation.

Mute the phone is as easy as switching on the torch, change brightness, lock rotate screen etc.
If you use that button very often, then jeep it for mute.
I dont touch it never
On the oder side, bringing up the camera as fast as possible is something many many many people want (as other shortcuts)

I like the mute switch as it is for a simple reason.
Having the phone in my pocket, I can turn on/off Mute without looking and knowing for sure which state the phone is in.
With a toggle button, this will be a lot harder to do.
I have a love/hate relationship with the mute switch. I like it when I need it, but more often than not, I switch it accidentally, and it can be a long time until I discover that. I've missed calls because of it...
