A shutter button is only useful if it has a half press to focus option... otherwise you may as well just use the volume buttons.
Fortunately, the new button does seem to have a half press for focus.

I think they should just get rid of them apart from the new action button.

1. Press it to put the phone on silent.
2. Roll your finger up to increase volume
3. Roll your finger down to instantly mute it.
4. Press towards one end to take a photo.
5. Press towards the other end to call 911.
6. Flick it to express dismay at the current app and rate it one star.
7. Lick it to order dinner.
8. Shout at it to summon Siri
9. Caress it slowly in circles to make a phone call.
10. Caress it slowly in circles in the opposite direction to set off an emergency alert.
11. Triple press it to unlock the phone
12. Double press it to turn flight mode on.
13. Tap -.-. .- -- . .-. .- to open the camera.

See look what you can do with just that one button!
All very good, but you have 911 wrong, it needs to be "... --- ...". 😉

Let me. Guess that button going to be at the top of the iPhone because on the 15 pro max the button already in a stupid place

Apple plans to put the button on the right side of the iPhone, in the space where the mmWave antenna is on iPhones that are sold in the United States.
Shouldn’t this say Apple “has” put the button on the right side of the phone? These phones are already being manufactured for release next month.

Revulutionary. Must have feature… for YouTubers who make the review. 99.9999% of common humans will never use it.

"...it is going to be one of the most advanced buttons that's been introduced to date..."
That's when I stopped reading 🥱.
What's next ? One of the most advanced batteries ? One of the most rugged smartphone ? Nothing ? So... I'll pass again.

It's not the powering off that is the problem, it's the turning the screen off and requiring face login to get it back to the camera again. So if you get someone to use your phone to take a picture of you, and they accidentally hit the the power button and turn the screen off, you have to log back in for them and start again.

I've never experienced that. As long as my iPhone detects that I'm holding it, it has never automatically powered off. Whether making a photograph or just holding and using it normally (email, Safari, etc.)

You might want to check your phone's settings. Or... if your phone is automatically shutting off while it's in your hands, contact Apple for assistance.

"So if you get someone to use your phone to take a picture of you, and they accidentally hit the the power button and turn the screen off, you have to log back in for them and start again."

If the person has used an iPhone before they know where the power button is. And that it takes a number of pounds of force to turn it off - by design. It doesn't happen accidentally. If they've never used a phone before to take a picture, it would be good to advise them how to release the "shutter."

Multiple rumors have suggested that the iPhone 16 models are going to have an all-new button that's designed to make it easier to capture photos when the devices are held in landscape mode.

iPhone-16-Pro-Right-Side-Feature.jpg

Apple calls the button the Capture Button internally, and it is going to be one of the most advanced buttons that's been introduced to date with support for multiple gestures and the ability to respond to pressure. Here's everything the button will be able to do, according to rumors:
  • Lightly press on the button to autofocus while capturing an image or video.
  • Press harder on the button to take a photo.
  • Swipe left and right on the button to zoom in and out.
  • There may also be a gesture for switching between photo mode and video mode, similar to how you can capture a video with a press and swipe in the iPhone camera app.
The ability to autofocus with a light press on the button will be a gesture that DSLR camera owners are used to, as this is often how you autofocus when using a high-end camera.

Apple plans to put the button on the right side of the iPhone, in the space where the mmWave antenna is on iPhones that are sold in the United States. The mmWave antenna will be moving to the left side of the device to make space.

The Capture Button has been depicted in CAD renders and dummy models of all four iPhone devices, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman this week suggested that there is a possibility that it will only be available on the Pro models.

With the Capture Button, Apple will be able to encourage users to take images and videos captured in landscape orientation, which are better viewed on the Vision Pro headset.

Along with a Capture Button, the iPhone 16 models will feature slightly bigger displays, a new A18 chip that supports Apple Intelligence, and 8GB RAM for all models, which is necessary to power Apple's AI models. For more on what's expected, make sure to check out our iPhone 16 roundup.

Woohoo.......it's a camera ;)

People: More options is always better, it gives us more choice, and if we don't like it, we simply don't use it! It's always a win!

Apple: *adds an option*

People: What the hell Apple, there are too many options! 😡

Astonishing, isn't it.

Next thing you know people will be going 3rd order (ie, non-linear) when TV's ship with remote controls. It will mark the end of civilization as we know it.

We can already do these things on existing iPhones using the touch screen and/or the volume buttons. Please, Apple, do not add hardware complexity that is redundant and drives up cost to the consumer.

I seriously hope that this is a joke or a false lead rumor to distract from actual product features in development.
There’s a difference between being able to do something and doing it efficiently and well.

That’s Human-Computer-Interaction 101 and frankly why prosumers have tons of buttons and consoles focused on buttons to do things far more efficiently than what they CAN do without.

That’s common knowledge by prosumers.

It only makes sense a prosumer devices slowly evolves to do this as much as mass manufacturing limitations supports.

I personally am excited being a user of high-end DSLRs and it a fan of how limited the button options are with my iPhone Pros.

The action button I would very much line freed up with or enhanced by a more useful button that supports the capabilities this article outlines

We already have the Action Button, I don't see much of a point. Just integrate all these photography features into that, no need to make an iPhone even more complicated.

The "Action Button" might be the lamest thing Apple has ever done with the iPhone. Totally useless, give me back my ringer switch.

You can already use the volume button to take pictures, we don't need a dedicated button for that. What exactly is the point of all this?
Partly why I'm sort of glad I still have an older iPhone. No weird, obscure, and honestly useless extra buttons.

Once there was a time, when the creator of the iPhone wished, that all buttons should be eliminated!

...but times are changing. o_O

Are we sure this will be an exclusive photo/video button? It makes more sense to make it flexible so that it can be assigned other actions.

so we’re back to adding buttons now?
Lots of likes on a [apparently sarcasm] comment that makes zero sense to me: "so we’re back to adding buttons now?" Please, one of the 30 folks liking on this tell me why back to adding buttons now should be denigrated with sarcasm.

The iPhone camera [which is a spectacular example of modern technology at its best] has had a terrible UI forever. A new shutter release button in a likely much better location makes nothing but good sense if it works, which is likely.
