I think they should just get rid of them apart from the new action button.

1. Press it to put the phone on silent.
2. Roll your finger up to increase volume
3. Roll your finger down to instantly mute it.
4. Press towards one end to take a photo.
5. Press towards the other end to call 911.
6. Flick it to express dismay at the current app and rate it one star.
7. Lick it to order dinner.
8. Shout at it to summon Siri
9. Caress it slowly in circles to make a phone call.
10. Caress it slowly in circles in the opposite direction to set off an emergency alert.
11. Triple press it to unlock the phone
12. Double press it to turn flight mode on.
13. Tap -.-. .- -- . .-. .- to open the camera.

See look what you can do with just that one button!
Perhaps integrate Morse code via satellite so you can signal assistance is required

I’m not sure it’s actually for photography at all. From the models we’ve seen the button is in an incredibly unergonomic place. It basically mirrors the position of the power button for the sake of symmetry.

Now hold your iPhone in landscape and see how difficult it would be to reach such a button. Now compare the same button to Xperia handsets. There is no way the designers at Apple would be so incompetent as to put a shutter button out of reach of your index finger.

Looking at the button's placement in the photograph at the beginning of this story... that would be perfect as my right hand's index finger would naturally fall right over it. Especially when the phone is held for landscape photos.

”Multiple rumors have suggested that the iPhone 16 models are going to have an all-new button that's designed to make it easier to capture photos when the devices are held in landscape mode.”

Yes, because it has been so excruciatingly hard to take a picture up until now..
Yeah, it has been freaking annoying actually, because of the diametrically opposite power button often being accidentally pressed when people go to take a picture. I don't know why the hell they moved it from the perfectly located position at the top of the phone.

Here's a wild thought. Give us a button that lets me put my phone on vibrate & silent or silent and no vibrate so I dont have to futz with sounds & haptics menus when I dont want to hear my phone vibrate some of the time.
Uhm have you looked into programming the action button with a shortcut?

The power button on my 15PM takes a somewhat substantial and deliberate amount of force to power the phone off and on.

I can't see that ever being confused (and accidentally pressed) with the upcoming shutter button that will likely require far less force to make an exposure.

It is when you have gloves on and need to quickly take a picture/video.

The only thing I expect from this new button is the ability to take a photo quickly when I take out the phone from my pocket and it’s still locked.

for selfies if holding with one hand I always struggle , the shutter button is on the other side , I can't press and hold and phone at the same time, I can only take the photo with the camera shutter and still not easy

Who says Apple can’t innovate anymore? lol.

I’m sure it has its uses but in terms of focus, we already have a perfectly usable way of doing that. Tap the screen where you want it to focus ? What am I missing?

What I would appreciate more is realistic amounts of RAM. Especially as the Pixel 9 Pro is getting 16GB and the iPhone 16Pro is getting half of that.

Safari is still reloading tabs for me half the time on the ‘paltry’ 6Gb iPhone 13 Pro I have.

Why not add a Touch ID sensor instead of a button, or at least add a Touch ID sensor on the surface of a button (like on some iPad models)? There must be more demand for Touch ID than many of the possible features of that new iPhone 16 button. Since the new button is about giving users a choice and not forcing them to use a feature, why not give users the choice of Touch ID? Tim Cook will probably never allow this because he is too mediocre to understand Touch ID's usefulness in a phone (ie. giving users a choice between Touch ID and Face ID on the same phone), and also because he can maximize profits by leaving out Touch ID.

It's not the powering off that is the problem, it's the turning the screen off and requiring face login to get it back to the camera again. So if you get someone to use your phone to take a picture of you, and they accidentally hit the the power button and turn the screen off, you have to log back in for them and start again.

Also , speaking of buttons… I’ve genuinely lost count how many times I’ve accidentally taken a screen shot on my phone while man handling it by pressing power and top volume together without realising it. So so annoying. More buttons … that will solve that problem for sure!!

Have you tried the volume button to take a picture?

A shutter button is only useful if it has a half press to focus option... otherwise you may as well just use the volume buttons.
