Please say it isn't so, I'm so tired of 3 web pages refreshing. When I switch between them.

I have a 3GS running iOS 5 and it doesn't do that, anymore. Wait and see iOS 5, it's great. If you still have problems, restore as a new phone.

I dont think my iPad has a mic?

You think it has a camera and no mic?

Kk, well look on the top of the device for a little hole in the middle (on the top left on the iPad 1).

It's amazing how much less memory you need when you're running Obj-C instead of Java.

I largely agree with what you said, and I had to chuckle because I almost wrote something about the GT-R (i.e., V6 and 3700lbs doesn't translate into slow acceleration and poor handling).

That being said, and being a bit of a car nut, I did want to mention: the current R35 GT-R is 3.8L and the current Gen IV Viper is 8.4L, the ACR version of the Viper currently holds the Nurburgring [production car] record of ~7:12 :)

Haha my bad, I forgot about the displacement of the GT-R and the Viper's just getting more and more ridiculous haha I can't keep track... all I know is that the GT-R's engine is tiny in comparison but that has nothing to do with its performance. If we're talking stock current gen GT-R and stock current gen V10 Viper, I'll put any money on the GT-R destroying the Viper in all aspects... besides pure fun maybe hahaha

Apple has always been stingy with RAM--whether it's in their computers or iStuff. And when they have offered extra RAM on their computers they gouge for it. I have no idea why they do this or why they have such an aversion to increasing the memory capacity of their devices when the costs clearly drop every year while the necessity of the boost goes up every year.

Good post. And quite true on all points made.

If it's enougn for the iPad 2...

I'm guessing iPad 3/iPhone 6 will have 1.5GB for a more OS X like experience

Relax. 512 is fine. Remember, it's not Android. iOS 5 will be very efficient.
Another 512 would have a negative effect on battery life as well.

The iPhone 5 will have 1g. :D

Spec nerds who care about this number without regard to the entire system usually don't understand what they believe they do :p

Also, i'd 90% of the people who buy iPhones don't even know smartphones have RAM. Why should they care, if it runs well? And iPhones do run very well.

I'm siding with the "let's stop the spec arms race on mobile" camp here.

The alternative would be to see the analogue to Photoshop and MS Office in mobile: each iteration of the app becomes more of a resource-hog, and developers lay back on the available resources "just because they can".
Manufacturing cost-related reasons aside, Apple again is embracing the clever idea that a different form factor/environment (i.e., mobile) requires a
different design philosophy. Meanwhile, Microsoft just wants to slap desktop windows on a tablet, and Android fans claim that raw, brute-force multitasking is "true" multitasking. I disagree...

The "future proof" camp has a point, but sounds defensive at the least (we don't know what iOS upgrades are coming - perhaps a low-memory footprint is in Apple's roadmap).

I would argue that Automatic Reference Counting (ARC) does not quite give you "The benefits of Garbage Collection without the drawbacks". Instead, it would be closer to the truth to say that it gives you "The benefits of a managed memory environment (what we had so far), without the drawbacks (tedious retain/release coding)". It is the better than both worlds.

Paging on flash hard drive?

Is RAM not that vital since paging out to disk is pretty fast when the disk is flash memory?

Is RAM not that vital since paging out to disk is pretty fast when the disk is flash memory?

Last time I checked the docs, iOS devices don't perform paging to 'disk' (at least for third party apps); physical RAM is all you get. And seems to be enough...

Maybe it only has 512 MB accessible for other apps, and another 512 MB is for Siri.

Kind of like how the Atrix has a gig of RAM but the other 512 MB is only accessible with the Lapdock

A bit of a let-down, but this was not a deal breaker for me as it seems the iOS devices do very well on 512MB of RAM (at least my iPad 2 does). More RAM is always good providing the app developers don't get sloppy and hog it all up. So if Apple were to increase the RAM, I'd like them to limit individual apps so that no one app could use it all. I see the drawbacks there, but I think it is better than dealing with the App Store being loaded with apps from developers who fail to optimize their RAM usage and therefore apps being incompatible with older iPhones.

Very thoughtful. Makes sense.

I can't believe I'm reading that having just enough RAM is good enough. Ever think that as time goes on, the phone will fail with OS upgrades, patches, and updates? How often can aapl add functionality to their OS without requiring more memory?

This limited RAM is going to force another iPhone purchase in the future when their new OS can't run well on 512M RAM.

a outdated 8 month old a5 chip and underclocked to boot....like seriously...and people say the ipad ram.I guess that is how this company get over on people..:apple:

Isn't it sad this 8 month old A5 chip is faster than the Dual core Galaxy S2 that was released just months ago?

BrowseMark 89567pts vs 50504pts from the Galaxy. And this is doing it underclocked.

I dont think my iPad has a mic?
Yes, it does, it's on the top of the unit. If you have an iPad 2 3G, it's a little hole in the black plastic strip. If you have a WiFi-only iPad, I believe the top is just metal, no plastic strip.

The iPad/iPod touch now come with front-facing cameras and built-in microphones for FaceTime.

the only argument i can see right now is that it doesn't "need" 1gb for a good experience, which is a statement that *will* eventually become untrue. fast forward 1 year when they up it to 1gb on the new model and everyone defends how it's good that apple doesn't allow new feature "x" on the 4S because its limited amount of ram would ruin the experience.

thank goodness they update as little as possible to ensure their phones are as non-future-proof as possible! but hey it works, i reserved a 4S so i'm buying right into their shady practices. all things considered its still the most appealing phone to me (especially coming from a 3g), but i will call a ******* move when i see one, and nobody here who is a conscientious consumer is doing themselves any favours trying to argue it away.

nor are the "if you don't like it gtfo" attitudes. there is nothing wrong with critiquing things that you like, and downright scary to think there are people who believe that you never should.
