For me and many of us this will be a let down for there will only be a 4s. Everyone keeps claiming of analysts claiming of a redesign, but one thing I know about analysts is they don't know SQUAT!!! They just like seeing their name and "the secrets they know". The leaked cases don't mean anything cheap chinese products that don't take much to produce. I am not getting my hopes up this year like the past where the same analysts said there would be things on other apple products that never came into fruition. Save yourself the disappointment and realize it will be like the 3gs...

I will probably get down ranked for this, so have at it.

Apple BETTER have kept the iPhone 5 as one of their biggest secrets ever. If the event comes and goes with a 4S, with an A5 processor and an 8MP camera and some minor tweaks, a few things will happen.

First, Tim Cook may lose some respect. He has been at the helm for the past 9 months, and the iPhone, following Apple's usual schedule, is about 3 months late. If Tim doesn't release a major, innovative product, I fear many investors will think that "Steve Jobs will always be better". In my head, Steve Jobs should have been the best, and he was, while he was the CEO, now it's someone else's turn.

Secondly, I fear Apple will start losing some major market share and fast. The iPhone 4 is a beautiful phone. The screen resolution is amazing. Battery gets me through the day without worries. And it's pretty quick. However, Apple has prided itself on being this major innovative company, when frankly the A4 chip is under clocked to around 833MHz, 512MB of RAM doesn't cut it, and many other critiques. The A5 would add 1GHz, and that's great, however new phones are coming out with 1.2 and 1.5GHz clock speeds, and Apple will have their newest phone on the market running a slower processor. Not very innovative if you ask me. Also, I have no doubt in my mind that if a 4S is released, the screen resolution will stay the same. And while the iPhone 4's screen is great now, in a few months when 720p resolution screen are getting released, Apple will again be behind. I wouldn't care too much, just stop saying you're this big, innovative company. If you want to say that about yourself, then start proving it, because a 4S isn't too much proof.

Thirdly, and this is the most unimportant, I will look elsewhere for my cellular phone needs. I love Apple, I'll never get rid of my Macbook Pro or iPad, frankly I feel they are the best, and most innovative. But honestly, I do not like the iPhone 4 design. I like my phone naked, and while I haven't had any major incidents, keeping the iPhone 4S in pristine condition would just be another year of hell. Not to mention 4G has been "blazing" through my area for about 4 months now, and I would really like to get on that bandwagon.

Apple will do what they feel is best, although I feel their judgement has always been somewhat clouded. They have amazing software and they tie it in perfectly with their hardware, and it is such a great experience. I simply don't want a 4S for myself, and I am not sticking with my iPhone 4 until possibly next October. Others may feel differently, and that's fine. This is what I see happening if the next iPhone is a minor upgrade.

1.2 and 1.5GHz clock speeds, and Apple will have their newest phone on the market running a slower processor.

Actually regardless of Ghz, the A5 will actually be faster than either of the mentioned clock speeds. I posted on this with links numerous times before, do a search because I am just too lazy right now. But in the CPU and GPU dept, the iphone 5 which will have the same innards as the ipad 2 will be the one of the fastest out. Regardless of Ghz.

Edit: Here.

At first glance, the dual-core A5 chip does appear to be very similar to a Cortex-A9, but rather is probably a highly proprietary design that is also compatible with the ARMv7 instruction set. Qualcomm’s upcoming Krait chip takes the same approach, as does Marvell’s Armada. So saying this phone has this Ghz processor and comparing it to another just based on Ghz is probably not a accurate representation of how either will perform on a given OS.

When the iPhone 5 debuts, it will have one of the fastest phones if not the fastest, regardless of Ghz.The iPad 2 which has the A5, out performs the Galaxy 2 by a wide margin, even though the Galaxy 2 has a .2 Ghz(200Mhz) advantage. Same goes for the upcoming HTC with the 1.5 Ghz processor. The A5 beats that too. Its not all about the Ghz.

The Gpu in the A5 literally destroys anything out right now. And upcoming into 2012. As you can see how well hardware performs depends on well the OS performs with the hardware. The A5 wins most of the tests.

So how will Android be a 'year ahead'.

im pretty sure its going to be a 4S, they are going to follow the 3G line up like how they went to 3GS I think the new body style we see is for a new ipod, reason is i doubt they can have a iphone with a metal back without any reception issues and plus they have to ditch that sliver back on the ipods. ;)

i agree. i too am lazy to get the links out, but i believe anandtech compared the sg II to ipad 2 and the ipad still won in most if not all categories.

I think there will be an iPhone 5, simply because if Apple waits 18 months to introduce a speed-bump'd iPhone 4S, then they're really ignoring the competition.

The iphone 4 is still the number 1 selling cell phone and outselling the competition so the idea of a 4s in not too far off.

no they are arrogant. though I still like apple products. They release what they want to release not what consumers want.

The original iPhone was only a secret because so many people had their eyes shut.

The iPhone 5 is a different case. Everyone in the world is trying to scoop this phone, but there's almost no trace of it. The best anyone has to go on are some case designs, that's all.

No doubt Apple is spending millions of dollars to keep this thing secret. Probably their secret protection operation resembles the CIA's.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_4 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8K2 Safari/6533.18.5)

I would be thrilled if the next iPhone is a 4 with the A5 and better internal hardware. I still think the 4 is a beautiful design, and the A5 would make it as fast/faster than anything out there. IMO, a total redesign is just not necessary.

There were no design leaks of the iPad 2, just case leaks prior to launch. So hopefully the iPhone 5 will be an all new design.

I have a feeling deep down that it will only be a 4S, but then again like others have mentioned, it would be foolish for Apple to wait this long to just release an updated 4.

I personally hope it's only a 4S.....that way I don't too stupid when the new one is released and I have my 4 that I just bought recently.

I Love the design of the iPhone 4 so I don't think I'll be too jealous of a redesign, just the new processor and camera.

Despite the recent prototype story (which isn't entirely clear), I think Apple learned some lessons from the iPhone 4/Gizmodo debacle and have made an extra effort to keep things under wraps.

I will say this though (and I hope this is not the case). If the next iPhone is simply the 4S and not a redesigned "5" then I might seriously contemplate jumping ship until Apple does refresh their hardware. Look, I love my iPhone 4, but it's clear that the display needs to get bigger and I also would really love 64 GB. Also if the 4S is all we get in October, this forum is going to erupt with angry and disappointed members (myself included).

I'm already contemplating the Nokia N9 (3.9" screen and 64 GB) in a worst case scenario situation. I just don't know if I can use that device with AT&T.

Can anybody else confirm this? Because if this is true, then we really shouldn't be worried about the lack of an iPhone 5 leak.

Looks like we might not even get leaks of Apple products in the future if this keeps up..

Tried searching past articles but also I dont remember any concrete leaks of the ipad2

^^ Yeah, pretty sure the iPad 2 was just case leaks.

Right, and since the iPad original, was leaked before the announcement (although not in the same way as the iPhone 4), i'm guessing Apple put up tough restrictions after both the leaks. And they're being loose with the iPhone 4S, because heck, it looks just the like the iPhone 4. So it makes sense..

I never said the iPhone whatever will be a year behind or that Android would be a year ahead. I simply stated that Apple's newest iPhone would be slower than newer phones. The Nexus Prime is rumored to have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and run on a 4G network. I am not an Android fan, and don't like their software at all, so will not be getting this phone, but prove to me that a 4S, running a 1GHz dual core processor will be faster than a 1.5GHz dual core processor. The 1.5GHz will win, plain and simple. Network connection wise it would be a major difference. Graphics and phone performance, most likely minimal.

Considering they did do a better job when an employee lost the phone at a bar (at least the employee had a good excuse with the tequila), it might simply be a case of learning from their earlier mistakes.

The only thing less credible than an analyst is a person who makes blind speculations on forums.

GHz don't mean everything. Architecture means a lot. i7's perform better than i3's, even when the i3 clocked ~200MHz higher. Plus iOS 5 is built to function with the A5, unlike what the Nexus Prime would have, which is a third party operating system slapped onto its hardware.

Gdsnyder, I never said that you said Android would be a year ahead, I was lazy and just posted that from another thread which I posted.

I see the links are broken. I will post some more below.

Like Hangman said, Ghz doesn't mean a thing. It how well the OS can utilize the hardware it has. And how well the articture of the said processor is. The A5 can do more clock for clock than a similar spec CPU.

It has a memory controller on die, which the other dual core Cortex A9 do not. Better power management, better memory management and iOS can better take advantage of these advancements.

This will explain the info in the links somewhat, so I am posting this again.

At first glance, the dual-core A5 chip does appear to be very similar to a Cortex-A9, but rather is probably a highly proprietary design that is also compatible with the ARMv7 instruction set. Same goes for the upcoming HTC with the 1.5 Ghz processor. The A5 beats that too. Its not all about the Ghz.

Samsung Exynos 4210: dual 1.2Ghz

These benchmarks have the dual core Cortex A9 snapdragon running at 1.5Ghz preproduction processors and the production version running at a more moderate 1.2Ghz. The A5 still beats both in most tests.
