HOLY COW!!!!! My white iPhone 5 bent exactly the same way! It waws in an Otterbox Defender case for about 10-11 months (since new) and about 1 month ago the top button stopped working sometimes. So I took it to Apple get a replacement under warranty. When I took it out of the case I noticed it was bent. I thought I was going to be screwed with trying to get it warrantied. Nope! The "genius" noticed it right away too and said "it's a good thing you're getting a new phone today". I was so happy it didn't void the warranty. It made me like Apple even more that day.

Spoiled enough to get a $549 (retail cost) cell phone at age 13 = spoiled enough to know you can't show up to school with the "cheap" 5C over the "expensive" 5S.

If you had read my post she wanted to get an iPhone 5 which is the same price as the iPhone 5c right now. It has nothing to do with the cost of the phone and everything to do with the perception.

This op doesn't take into account that 13 year old kids are copycats. They need to see someone popular or famous with it before they want it.

Wait until she sees a popular kid with one.

I know they are copycats, isn't that the point? If it is proclaimed uncool they will go elsewhere.

It would be one thing if the 5c was the ONLY iPhone and someone set the trend with it. But its not. Someone will set the trend with the iPhone 5s or another brand of phone.

Isn't the fall semester just a couple of weeks old, even for private schools? How has she come home with a straight A report card?

IMO, your daughter is doing what a lot of the big tech journalists did, which is to have an opinion on something they've never seen or held.

The feedback from almost all of these folks, once they'd handled the device after the keynote, was positive.

Wonder if your daughter will change her opinion once she's actually held/used one of these.

Or maybe, you guys, Apple was able to make a WHOLE lot more 5c's since they were already building most of the components for the iPhone 5....

I think Apple's strategy with the iPhone 5C is to capture a totally different subset of people who were not thinking of getting an iPhone before. As long as you buy ONE of the iPhones, whether it be the iPhone 5C or the iPhone 5S, I think Apple would be happy.

The real question is whether or not your daughter wants an iPhone 5S. If she does, then this plays into Apple's strategy nicely.

Of course. It is human nature. But I like to think most journalists are rational and have no problem being objective when the job calls for it (haha I know).

Objective and rational are not words I would use to describe teenage girls ;-)

Well thats it then, its all over for the iPhone 5c. :(

A single 13 year old girl has deemed it to be rubbish so clearly apple must not only stop production, but also collect every 5c made so far and burn them all.

Its a shame, it had such a short life. But clearly theres no other option now.

Yeah, right. Actually who's snapping the thing up are the over-70 crowd. I ordered mine this morning, two friends who are also not spring chickens have ordered theirs as well.

So let's see. That's three orders from old fogeys, and one 13-yo who supposedly says not gonna go there. Let Apple wonder! :D

This plays into Apple's strategy nicely because I can afford to buy my daughter and iPhone 5s if she wanted it.

But she said she wanted an iPhone 5 (same price as the 'c'). When the 5 becomes a non-option where will people that can't make the leap to 5s turn?

I wanted her to get a 5c. In fact I tried to push my wife to a 5c as well. Neither are biting. I'll ask my son, he is 16, which he prefers but he is not getting a phone. It's not important enough for him to get straight A's I guess.

Uh oh, the 5c better not get the label of "that's the phone my grandmother has..."

Guys, I consider myself an Apple fan. I have an 2 Apple TVs, iPhone, Time Capsule, and three MacBook Pros of various flavors. I'm not in here trying to bash Apple.

The demographic my daughter falls in is critical to the mobile phone market and the ecosystem that surrounds it. And at this age there is little in the way of a fanboy mentality. They are fickle, impulsive and can change trends overnight.

While you may not care what my daughter thinks or even accuse me of lying (which someone just did) the industry as a whole does care if her perception becomes the general perception.

Keep your eyes closed, that way it will pass you by.

While I agree with some of the notion of your daughters perception, I also have to think how many 13 year olds are actually purchasers of anything. It's their parents that ultimately fork out the dough. As a 13 years old who to this point has only been exposed to one model of iPhone (premium) does it surprise that someone in the group labeled it as "cheap" and now its uncool. Kids are a fickle group and as soon as someone shows up with one in person and everyone sees it's still an iPhone, who knows, it could become cool.

It's a wait and see strategy that if it works, there will be more. If not, it was a cheap experiment by Apple.

Good point.

OP?

Three report cards per semester (greater accountability and parent involvement maybe?). She's been in school for two months so unless she printed a report card on her own (which would be beyond her computer skills for sure) just to get a phone it's legit.

Dear OP,

I would like to apologise for the ridiculous responses you are receiving. You made a perfectly valid point (one my own 14 year old cousin agrees with) and you are getting nothing but defensive criticism thrown your way.

MacRumors used to be the place to come for intelligent discussion, but those days are slipping away.

Cheers.

Let's judge the strategy of a multibillion dollar company by a 13 year old girl.

how can I say this without getting banned?

this response, and thousands of others very similar, makes this forum not a fun place to visit. why do people feel the need to constantly be sarcastic and make
idiodic remarks back to people? does it make them feel special?

to the original poster, I would ask your daughter does she herself think it "looks" cheap? is she worried about her friends laughing at her for having a "cheap" phone? and what kind of phone does she want?

personally, If my daughter came home with straight a's
I would get her any phone she wanted....with the exception of a few
rules.

No worries guys. Honestly who doesn't expect this from this group of people. Apple has a cult following and the deeper you are the more defensive people get at the hint of a slight. The good news is reality will prevail.

I have no idea if my daughters perception is wide spread, which is the reason I posted. Based on the feedback some say yes and others disagree. Only time will tell.

All I can convey is my experience which is the two females in my house (daughter and wife) that I tried to nudge to the iPhone 5c said no.

I made a deal with my daughter that if she got straight A's on her next report card she could get a cell phone. Well she came home yesterday with straight A's.

My natural response was to ask her what color of iPhone 5c she wanted. I thought a 13yo girl is a natural target for the 5c because it's well... colorful. Her response surprised me.

She proceeded to lecture me on how the 5c looks cheap and that plastic phones are 'not cool' and how none of her friends would be seen with one. All of this with the typical flare and drama of a 13yo girl.

Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion but if the iPhone 5c is getting labeled as 'not cool' by 13yo kids, on top of the fact that it appears too expensive for China, who the hell did they build this phone for?

sounds to me like someone's been brainwashed by an apple fan-atic dad. exactly how many NON-plastic phones are even out there? and she's even aware of which ones are plastic and which ones aren't? please.

If I were you, I would tell your daughter to ask the 'cool' kids what they thought. Tell her to try and get an idea of what others would think of her choice of phone.

That way she can make an informed decision. And won't get ridiculed for having a cheap plastic phone.

Objectivity in a teenager? please...

I don't care which phone she gets. I don't even care if she gets an iPhone. When she to me she wanted an iPhone I tried to steer her to the 5c.

Wait! You're telling me that someone doesn't like the 5C. NOOOOO... it can't be so. Seriously though, since when does someone have to like a device just because they are in the device's target demographic? I would say I'm in Samsung's target demographic, but guess what, I don't like any of Samsung's phones. Are you going to question whether the GS4 is for young college guys now? I would also like to point out that 1 teenage girl and her group of "friends" is hardly a scientific study on whether teenage girls like or dislike the iPhone 5C.
