I agree that I too like the smaller form factor of phones, but find it funny that I have less issues with the 6's case than you. I too dislike cases, but found the 5, and 5S really slippery, uncomfortable to hold, and those slipped out of my pocket constantly, where the 6 doesn't.

The 5S was anondised, the 5 Slate Grey wasn't - I don't know why you can't understand or rather didn't know this...

Actually it was Anodized according to the Apple Press release, and later tests by 3rd parties. It is quite possible Apple lied in their press release.

iPhone 5 is the thinnest smartphone in the world, with an all-new 7.6 mm anodized aluminum body that is 18 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than iPhone 4S. Designed with an unprecedented level of precision, iPhone 5 combines an anodized aluminum body with diamond cut chamfered edges and glass inlays for a truly incredible fit and finish.

Anodized aluminum can chip just like paint can. I have countless Aluminum products in my household that exhibit this trait. I feel (like the 2nd link states) that Apple either didn't use a proper process, or, simply didn't use a durable enough grade of aluminum for the overall case of the phone.

I'm pretty sure the silver was anondized but then they painted the slate grey over the top, hence why you can just scratch it with anything reasonably sharp to reveal the anonzied silver below. Where as spacy grey (and follow up colours) are anondized as part of the process so they are much deeper into the aluminium rather than a coat of paint on top. You can get it off still (as evident in Unbox Therapy's 6S shell video) but it takes a hell of a lot of work and its pretty deep/practically layers of actual metal, rather than just paint on top.

Don't think there was any gray when it came to iPhone 5. There was slate/black though.

You're right, I was just getting the name wrong, it was just called Slate wasn't it.

I have a similar confidence that all 5 models were Anodized to present their outer layer color. It is highly likely that they had an issue with their manufacturing process which resulted in a fragile outer coating on the Slate models. It is likely they switched processes slightly for the 5s, and later 6 models. I am sure you have had an anodized water bottle, pen, or other product that has had a fragile anodized coating. Perhaps they didn't use a high enough voltage on the Slate models, or the chosen dye interfered with the overall adhesion more than the silver model.

Regardless,
I find it odd that they had any problems with the 5, as this wasn't their first time selling anodized aluminum products. The iPod Mini, aluminum shuffle, colored nano, and The Macbook lines have had anodized coatings far before they sold the iPhone 5.

In the end, we can only speculate, as Apple is unlikely to reveal why they chipped, or what fueled their decision to switch colors.

Its a sad time in my life when i'm going to have to resort to a case to correct Jony Ive's short comings, it really is. I can't stand cases but unless I want this next one to break too, I guess i'll have little choice but to join the swarms of others that cover their phones in cheap silicone.

Couple of not cheap silicone cases, which you might appreciate or even love:

I don't use a tab nor a notebook so I opted for a 6+. I am okay with the size (see first statement, lol) and although it is a gorgeous piece of hardware it has to be cased since it isn't used exclusively at a desk. Oh well but it is a very slippery device and spending a grand for an unlocked 64GB phone doesn't make you feel very good if you drop it. For those people who choose not to case their phones (yes, there are quite a few of them) it would be a good design change to add some sublte texturing on the edges.

All in all I like the hardware a lot but iOS has some serious shortcomings.

No external sustained notifications. This is a super huge issue for many users.
Siri has serious problems recognizing words.
Siri cannot perform local task when there isn't a decent data connection.
Navigation isn't up to par. Basic functionality is so-so at best. I especially hate blowing past turns because it didn't warn me in time to turn. This happens so often I jumped back to google nav.

There are a ton of nagging minor iOS issues but those are the significant issues for my friends and I.

Fair, you're probably right it counts as anodized, though maybe that term is quite broad and can include multiple ways to colour the surface of aluminium. There was obviously something wrong with the Slate as, even though it did appear to get better on later 5's was very fragible and came off the edges just by daily holding after so long - you can't do this to a Macbook or even a silver iPhone 5. I guess its the reason why Slate Grey is so much lighter, Space Grey certainly felt like a thin painted on top layer where as Space Grey feels like the colour of the metal all the way through (like a Macbook case) perhaps its why they've not been able to get it as dark as they'd like and why there are currently two different shades of space grey! :/

I don't think the design is terrible and I agree it isn't the best looking iPhone to date. Apple will either try to get the home button on the back of the next iPhone or have the finger print reader built into the screen to reduce the overall size.

OP, I like your list. My all time favorite has become the 4S. (I still can't pry it away from my wife). I've still got my old 4 and am considering going back to it because I hate nearly everything about ios8 on my 5C. (phone's ok, but oh that OS).

Other than that, you should know better than to come to an Apple fan site and complain about something from Apple (though I seem to do it all the time)

The iPhone 6, Apple's most successful iPhone ever - and i'm looking at it right now, practically loathing. Its the worst iPhone i've ever owned and i've had everyone since the minute the first one was released in the UK. I appreciate the power and the smoothness with which the iPhone 6 runs iOS but then so did the much smaller iPhone 5S so nothing has really changed there. But the design, oh Jony, this is your worst ever. Its ugly, its too big, it has a protruding camera, the space grey is really silver, those antenna lines are just appalling, its too slippy to hold and it just feels like its lost its soul of an Apple product and looks like a generic handset.

If I were to list the iPhones in order of favouritism they'd go.

  1. iPhone 5 (Even though the paint was fundamentally flawed and thus it shouldn't be first, there was just something about the shape and design coupled with that slate grey colour which I looked on in awe of for ages, it was beautiful)
  2. iPhone 4 (A true design icon, this thing was beautiful on release and still is now)
  3. iPhone 4S (Only because it was the above but better)
  4. iPhone 5S (It was my favourite phone at the time and one id be very happy to be still using to this day and am considering going back to)
  5. iPhone (The first was truly magical at the time, like nothing else id held in my hand or used, sure 8 years later it looks limited as hell, even a year later it did, but my even the swipe gestures blew me away at the time)
  6. iPhone 3GS (It was fast for its time and I enjoyed having it white, it was just no where near the design levels of the 4th and 1st)
  7. iPhone 3G (I was disappointed to be replacing the original iPhone with this at the time to be honest, it felt like a massive cost cutting handset made of plastic, I grew to get used to it, but its near the bottom for a reason)
  8. iPhone 6 - yeah my least favourite for all the reasons above and below.
Further more, i've never used any of the above phones with a case and now I feel its a necessity with the iPhone 6 design. Its too big and its too slippy - I keep trying to remember to remove it from my pocket when I sit in the car, but nope, I always forget and it always falls out and slips down the impossible to reach chair sides, arghhhh. I know a cover would help some of this slippy-ness (as would super skinny jeans all the kids wear to almost literally shrink wrap the phone to their legs) but I don't see why I should have to add a case, i've never liked cases, i've never used a case on any of the phones before and they were all fine, but not this one - in fact this is the first phone that i've ever dropped and broken the screen on too. 8 years of iPhone and this is the first i've broken...

Unfortunately I think its the end of iPhone's i'll love - Apple has bowed to mass opinion and to be honest the masses are never right about anything, they like Britain's Got Talent, the X-Factor and Justin Bieber, they also like massive phones, especially people under the age of 20 who consume their entire lives on a phone. I'm 30, so I still use a Macbook for 95% of what I do and my Apple Watch seems to cover the mobile 4% which leaves me barely ever looking at my phone.

I'll admit, i'm one of the ones who bitter about the size increase - Id have accepted 4.2" because on the debut of iOS7, I'll admit that with the full screen keyboard AND the faster typing suggestions above it, that the 4" screen was starting to struggle. But to be honest, I could live with this now, with Whatsapp web I literally never text from my phone, its not something I enjoy doing so Facebook, Whatsapp and iMessage are all done from the Macbook.

I'd honestly pay £200-£300 more than the cost of the iPhone 6S+ for a 4" phone format with the same specs. I know the real difficulty is making a power house of a phone in a small package. I also know that i'm in a very small minority of people here want the smallest, slimmest phone they can properly tuck into their pockets so it wont fall out and doesn't consume (any) video or media on it. But as I say, id be willing to pay a premium for such a device (instead of the 4" being referred to as a budget device, or a phone for women's hands!!)

But, alas, I know its not going to happen and I doubt we'll ever see anything like the iPhone 4 or the iPhone 5 again design wise, both in size and taste and i'm sure 95% of iPhone owners won't care about that, its a super successful mass market product now, not a niche device.
Been a good phone for me......Eight will be the best/game changer

I will admit I did not read the entire OP's text and I am glad I did not!

I am glad that Apple is not forcing me into the tiny 4" screen anymore. The 6+ is by far my favorite iPhone and I have owned them all.
Wouldn't ever go to android

Apple will need to make a big change with the 8

this was the worst. the screen clicked and moved. the camera would get covered and mine kept getting touch disease. awful phone.

I agree with most of the list- slate iPhone 5 is one of the best looking phones ever. Some TV shows like Vampire Diaries even still used it years later because it was so cool looking (and probably easier to hide the Apple logo). I would not put the 6/6s below the 3G and 3GS though. Those were the worst with that plastic back that wouldn't even sit on a table.

Did you get the SE since it was so similar to the 5s? I see you have the 7, did you get used to the form factor?

No I didn't - we have an SE in the household though. It's lovely, but I couldn't make a jump back in technology. And unfortunately I've gone to the darkside of the 7 Plus this time. I HATE the size, but I really wanted the dual cameras and as the 4.7" is too big to use properly one handed anyway I figured I might as well have the stupid sized one instead.

I understand that! I Have the 6s Plus and love it, except the size is still a bit much. I can't put it in my back pocket and ever time i sit down I have to take it out or loose circulation in half my body. smh the sacrifices we take for tech.

P.S. I also bought the MBP 15 inch 2016, whats your thoughts? I love the size and the speakers make my 2013 15 inch MBP sound like tin. The trackpad being huge is great, the rest of it like lack of mag safe sorta sucks.

I hate the hard edges on the SE, though it is nice to have for long handheld calls and taking photos, but the iPhone 7 is a great phone. I understand that you may slip it from time to time due to the form factor, but it feels softer and glides up and down from pockets and compartments with ease.

The iPhone 6 is also great. I don't know why I sold my phone and then bought the 7. They are very similar. 3D touch is annoying as it sometimes confuses longer option clicks with 3D touch functionality.

May also buy the MBP 15. I guess my life has been reduced to pure consumerism, and now I am serving the rest of my life as a technological receptacle.

Ever try the front pocket? I never understood carrying the phone in my back pocket.

I carry my 6s+ in my back pocket. It won't fit in my front pockets... especially if I sit (which I never sit with my phone in my pants).

The 5s was one of my favorite iPhones - could use it without a case. 6+ and 6s+ demand a case in my life (California desert / my super dry hands). 6s+ is a bit big and heavy to the point of inconvenience - but I love the screen. Do I think the 6 is the worst phone ever? No. But the thread was an awesome read. +1.

Tried a Google Pixel today but the screen was way too small for me. Guess I can't ever go back now :(.
