However, the iPhone 5 on iOS6 was the smoothest of all time. Nothing like it since and even though the latest S models are fantastic, the software has lost that Rolls Royce feeling.

I agree with you 100%

iPhone 5 and iOS6 were smoothest ever.

Echoing others in here that there is next to no lag on my 6S+ whatsoever.

People with dodgy units really need to quit preaching their cases as if they're the norm. Quit spewing nonsense.
You could try to troubleshoot the problem for those with issues or be an arsehole. Let me know which you go with. Oh wait.

The Plus versions of the iPhone simply has higher requirement of GPU power since it is rendering a higher number of pixel, AND it has to downscale them to the actual screen's resolution. The non Plus versions of iPhones never need to do this. So for the same GPU power, the Plus version will perform worse and/or show less framerate. Reducing animation/transparency reduces the GPU requirement, and will give you better framerate, which translate to smoother experience (anybody that has experience in tweaking a PC game for image quality and performance will know).

The questions would be whether the A8/9's GPU is not powerful enough (ie. Apple overestimate the GPU capabilities), or that the rendering and downscaling process in iOS is just not optimized enough.

This happens in OS X and retina MBPs too, where the UI could be ridiculously choppy (ridiculous for a pro laptop to lag on its own main OS' UI), especially in Yosemite. When Apple released the first retina Macbook Pro, the issue was that intel's iGPU was not powerful enough. Then with Yosemite, seems like OS X and/or drivers are the issue (and things are better in el Capitan).

So hopefully Apple can optimize iOS further (or metal) to improve performance.

Mine has lagged, frozen up multiple times, completely shut off to the point the only way to restart it was power button and home button restart, finger id scanner rarely ever works...

Who cares about that, seriously. It's stutter and freezing that should be worrying you. Until/unless Apple specs the Plus model higher than the 4.7" version there will always be performance differences between the two models. They use the same processor, GPU & RAM and yet the Plus model has to downscale a super-high resolution image to HD & on a larger screen to boot. So long as the Plus model doesn't perform badly (like the 6+ did) then it's ok, but if you're going to be comparing UI animation frame rates between the two models then you'll only be happy with the non-Plus phone.

Are you serious? So you're willing to accept that a premier flagship phone isn't capable of rendering the UI at a full 60fps when the CPU + GPU are clearly capable of doing so? Get out of here with your Apple fanboyism trying to defend Apple for not properly optimizing iOS for the 6S Plus.

It is NOT ok and it should never be ok that the premier phone underperforms it's smaller sibling. We work hard for our money and if we buy a top tier product we expect it to perform like a top tier product.

Period.

You have a defective unit, clearly. Touch ID has not once failed for me.

That's the problem though. There is no Apple Store around me, so can't go get it fixed, can't afford to be without a phone for a few days, but also can't afford to have an 850$ hold on my account to have a new one sent to me

That's a tough situation. Hopefully you can find some sort of solution. Have you tried a full restore to see if it solves any of your issues?

Have tried so twice. Have chatted on apple with them and they told me they want to do everything possible it's just the full charge or being phoneless holding me back. Trying to find a friend wow phone to use for a few days and send it back in

Well that's the first time I've been called an Apple fanboi.:D

Is it ok? Well no, but I'm forever told that perfection is unattainable. Heck, when it comes to iPhones I'd just be happy to get a nice screen and tight buttons...

Seriously though, I came into the 6S+ after spending 10 months with the 6+ and in comparison this thing is a monster. It flies. It keeps apps and browser tabs in memory without refreshing. It doesn't stutter, freeze or crash. Sure I'd like a working iCloud, 60fps everywhere in the UI and zero bugs in iOS9 but after the 10 months I've spent with a genuine POS Apple product, I'm actually very pleased with the 6S+. Had I come from a 6S then perhaps I'd be picking at faults but for me, like I say, this thing despite its faults is a breath of fresh air.

I feel identically

9.0.2 is pretty smooth too.

The best x.0 since iOS 7 design overhaul in my opinion.

iOS 8 really was a vista equivalent performance mess

Who are you and what did you do to @sunking101?
