Ahh, the glorious App Store. Over hundreds of thousands of apps waiting to be downloaded and discovered. Most of them, games.

I tried to argue with gamers that the iPhone is the future of mobile gaming and that the portable gaming machines (PSP, Nintendo DS) era is dead, they tried to fight back. They said that the iPhone can never ever replace them because the games are too childish (Angry Birds, Cut the rope) and graphics aren't good enough.

What are your thoughts?

I'm 35 and I've been gaming since I was 7-8 years old. The last portable gaming device I bought was a Gameboy. There is no reason to purchase these new portable devices when you have smartphones that can hold your attention for just as long and have the ability to be multiplayer/online.

The portable gaming industry is going down, especially as smartphones become stronger in graphics and processing power.

the so called real hard core gamers don't like anything that doesn't involve shooting, killing, maiming, hacking or some kind of violence. along with repetitive game play. and they go crazy over the most ridiculous stories that wouldn't even make it as a B movie.

if you can get past that, there are lots of nice games in the app store. angry birds is better and has more game play than most of the so called real games

If Nintendo got off their high horse and made such things as a Mario, Pokemon, and Zelda for the iOS and sold it for 9.99 they would make billions with such little effort. Of course the universe would explode so than I guess they have a legitimate reason.

I'm not a hard core gamer but even I know that my iPhone doesn't do action games and shooters nearly as well as a PSP**. Puzzle games, casual games, driving games, and RPGs are a different matter as the iPhone does them well enough or as good as a PSP.

I know this matter is subjective, but I've played emulators on my iPad and iPhone, and using a BT Wii remote is much better than using the screen controls on something simple like R-Type or Galaga. Turning auto-fire on helps a great deal, but that's kind of a cheat. What I've noticed is that during intense action its easy from my thumb to slip beyond the button area which results in a quick death. On my Wii Remote this does not happen.

**I'm using PSP as an example so settle down Nintendo people.

For you. Which is again my point. Not everyone is you, and not everyone plays games, or wants to play games, the exact same way you do.

This is the same logical trap that Apple fanboys and Fandroids fall into, every time: that everyone's preferences and behaviors are the same, and anyone using anything else is just being stupid.

Well, everyone who is a GAMER is like me. Which is the point you fail to understand.

Angry birds is fine for people like YOU, but it's a waste of time for real gamers. For YOU, you would never have bought a PSP Vita anyway.

Horrible battery life and non physical keys when playing games will mean that there will always be a place for true dedicated handheld gaming devices. I love my PS Vita. Destroys the iPhone when it comes to playing games.

Honest question. What games do you play on your Vita?

Bought mine about 4 months ago. Played some Uncharted and MLB. Has been collecting dust ever since. I need some ideas.

Rayman Origins
Madden
Gravity Rush
Mortal Kombat
Super Stardust Delta
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
LittleBigPlanet

Nintendo should spend all their time figuring out how to make great touch games and jump on the iOS wagon. They would have made insane amounts of money.

Well I tell you what, since getting my first iPhone (iPhone 4) I haven't looked back at portable game machines. I have a Nintendo DS lite but I haven't picked it up to play in about 2yrs! Plus now I own an iPad 3, i find gaming on iOS even better... So I'd say yes, the iPhone replaced portable gaming for me.:)

and I don't care what any so called hardcore gamer says about touch controls...:p and this coming from someone who's owned some classic machines over the years from NES to portable Game & Watch to SEGA consoles to Sony etc... I've had or played them all....

Not really. The absolutely 100% violence-free game named "Portal 2" is an instant hit between gamers everywhere. Even became the winner of the Game of the year award, twice.

the iphone is a jack of all trades and master of none. I think that says it all.

They were right. Touch controls are mediocre at best. I played with a PS Vita the other day and it just reminded me how terrible on-screen controls really are. The iPhone isn't awful for gaming (no smartphones are really) but they certainly aren't better than dedicated portable gaming systems by a long shot.

Touch screen controls are terrible for most types of games, so it wont be able to. Gaming on a phone is fun for casual gaming. Certain games will never play well without physical buttons, while others like plants v zombies are suitable for it.

I'm a gamer. I have a ps3 and ps vita. Also an Xbox. I love my iPhone but its just not in the same league.

Playing something like Mortal Kombat or Madden on the PS Vita trumps anything a phone with touch based controls can do by a huge margin. FPS the most popular console genra simply cannot compete on a phone against consoles. Nova looks great and is actually a little fun to play at first but it could never hope to compete with call of duty with physical controls, Gears of war, Halo, etc..

Now MMORPG's that interconnect with computer users could work and I think really take off on touch screens

I agree the iPhone can not replace portable gaming machines. I do enjoy playing on my wifes Nintendo 3DS. The controls for some games on the iPod and iPad are not the best. I do prefer playing Mortal Kombat on the bigger systems or handheld ones. I know there are emulated GBA games for your iPod Touch if you jail breaked it which I will not do with mine.

With that said there are some games that are fun to play on the iPhone, iPod or iPad.

I am a gamer to a certain extend, own an Xbox 360, N64, Wii and technically my wife's Nintendo 3DS. My iPad, iPod Touch and future (iPhone) can not compare the fun I normally have playing on my Xbox 360. But while traveling I do not mind using my iPad to play a game but ususally I am on my iPad to watch movies or read comic books.

Technically Apple did have a video game system but it flopped.

As others said, the iPhone can't do everything that a dedicated device can. I do think the iPhone will fill the role for anyone who uses the portable devices as simply time wasters... but those who enjoy more involved games will likely stick with dedicated handhelds and consoles.

Gaming starts and ends with physical buttons, and a joystick.

So there you go, iPhone will NEVER replace portable game machines.

It has for me. Where do people go that they have time to play a full on shooter using a portable gaming device? I surely wouldn't be able to even get past the loading screen waiting for a doctor or a quick game at karaoke night showing a friend.

Angry birds and now Bad Piggies, I can bang through a couple levels waiting in the car, or while riding the bus, or the aforementioned doctor's appointment.
