.......and here is further Navigation to the Keypad tab.

The LED backlit touch pad is in use here. The normal menu/ipod controls are faded out the appropriate keys needed for the keypad page are imposed. (the transparent circle over the "2" just represents the area being touched as the last 2 is added).

I don't they would input a oled clickwheel in the iphone nano... but nice mock-up. Tomorrow i'm going to make another mock-up a little different... see how it turns out.

while designing that clickwheel I had the same thought that probably occured to the Apple designers. It would be a lot simpler with just one big touch screen.

Ive had a helluva time figuring out how to use the current clickwheel for everything. It leads me to believe that the iphone nano, if it has a click wheel, will have some other input method as well.

My version of the iPhone Nano

Touchpad is more advanced then ever, a OLED Screen Background displays certain options depending on the program/situation. For instance, in the phone option, the touchpad displays the numbers and call options while in iPod, it displays the familiar Menu, Fastforward, Rewind, and Play/Pause options.

Menu uses CoverFlow, allowing use of touchpad. Shortcuts can also be assigned to the navigation touchpad.

Since the nano does not feature a keyboard or keypad, it recognizes speech, allowing people to say what they want on their SMS instead of typing it. This feature will also work in many other applications such as Notes and SafariNano.

Very Very, VERY credible! very simple yet effective design...LOVE IT!

very nice mockup but i still don't think a oled screen background is usefull

Why not? Apple applied a Touch Screen to the iPhone so If they come up with a new idea they can easily change it The same idea would apply to the clickwheel.

I'm not sure if this was discussed or not, but how would you text on a click wheel? That would be one major thing they would need to focus on is text messaging, as that is how most 13-19 year olds communicate. I mean, hell, I'm 19 and I hardly ever use the actual "Phone" on my iPhone but I text like a mad man.

Those of you insisting that it the Nano will maintain touch screen capability are missing the entire point of offering a less featured model.

#1 This product will be geared toward the younger market. This is not a MAYBE. They will not release an iPhone nano with adults in mind. Are we aware of how many 13-19 year olds carry a cellphone and an iPod nano? The numbers would stagger you. Which leads into number 2...

#2 This will be 1 device to combine the younger market's cellphones and ipods. The touch screen is not the incentive to buy...this factor is the incentive to buy.

#3 A touch screen would never jive with the 13-19 year old market. They can't handle it. It will be trashed within hours, or days. Apple would either be replacing every lother one they sold, or be pissing off a lot of customers who (or whose children) broke or signifcantly injured their phones within a very short amount of time.

here is a quick mockup i did based on some of the others seen in this thread. Expect full use (and maybe some new implementation) of the clickwheel, along with navigation that looks very much like the iPhone, but feels very much more like the iPod:

(p.s. I changed the SMS icon to blue because i view those as top 2 functions for younger cell phones and 2 green icons looked bleh)
I disagree that the nano sized iphone will be for the younger markets. What I believe the nano sized iphone will cater to are those who simply do not need all the features and functions of a pda but would like something alone the lines of a smart phone. Such as the Cingular 8125 (older model) and it's little brother the 3125. The 8125 is a full fledged pda/windows mobile phone. You can view excel, powerpoint, pdf files etc. The 3125 is a smart phone. There for those who need the contacts, schedulers, etc., but not for those who need to work on an excel file from their pda.

Which brings me to #2. I do not think the click wheel will be involved here, but of all designs yours doesn't look too bad. Giving more height to the "nano" with the larger screen and keeping the wheel makes sense. However, the appeal to many with the iphone is the touch screen. I cannot see them doing away with this anytime soon, even if you think apple is here to cater to the 12 year old. 12 year olds usually have cell phones but they generally; in my opinion, do not care too much for the rest of the features. I think there will be much attention paid to wide screen, full web browsing, photo viewing, music listening, chat, and ical. That is pretty much about it. Anything else such as viewing documents and such seems like it wouldn't really happen.

To say the 13-19 year old market cannot handle a touch screen is ignorant at best. 13-19 year olds on this site are using computers that carry a price tag of nearly twice the amount of any other computer for the most part. Looking at the 18 and under thread can give you an idea of how much the touch screen would not be thrashed. Check out how meticulous the setups of some of these kids are. Check out how they have these machines that are on decent desks in semi clean rooms. We're not talking about your average 13-19 year old. We're talking about 13-19 year olds who at least appreciate design. The people, and I mean people of every age, will thrash anything providing they can replace it with their parent's money or with their own. Some people simply do not baby their stuff...that applies to every age.

I baby my stuff, I am over 25. I have a Blackberry 8700 from work. Had I bought this myself I would be using a screen protector and a case. Since it is not my own I simply couldn't care less. If it gets screwed up I get another. People with that mindset will thrash any device if they want knowing it will be replaced. That said, I find that the market for touch screens and 13-19 year olds is one in the same. 13-19 year olds appreciate the design and the cool factor just as much as a 20-99 year old can.

I AGREE!!

what do you think about that one?
In reallife it would be smaller like the size of the ipod nano

I think that your design could be possible, very possible...:)

thanks,
does it need some adjustments, but not too advanced, I don't have photoshop :(, I work with Gimp, wich is a good free program.

I've worked with Gimp but sometimes I find it a bit frustrating:( I prefer photoshop...
Anyway, another iPhone Nano design possibility is the one that said was leaked at the end of last year, remember? Could it be?

I use CS2 I can't remember how much it cost... I think you can find it for US$100-200

Can i just buy it online in an american store and then let it send to Belgium? because i just read an article that products are much cheaper in America?

There it is! Youve hit the nail on the head. Perfect design. Make it 2 or 4 gigs for 249 or 349, and youve got it. I want one.

Apple should stay away from the iPhone Nano, for now.

It would have to have a limited about of GBs, at most 2. And there won't be a SD slot. I say wait, and when iPhone 2G comes, release these

iPhone Nano 2GB 199 and 4GB 299
iPhone 2G 8GB 399 and 16Gb 499

Give the iPhone Nano, the same look, a bit smaller, and remove some of the apps, or give the 2G iPhone things like support for a modem, 3G supprt, read PDFs, edit Word doc etc

I believe this design to be more in line with the current iphone. I cannot see them dropping certain designs that really is the basis of the appeal of the device currently available; such as the touch-screen.
I do like this design but the click wheel seems like it would be taking a step in the other direction. It may very well be the case and it sticks with my initial statement that the market for the smaller phone would be to people who are not so inclined to need every feature. I think touch screen is a feature that is great but perhaps to keep costs down it will not have such capabilities. If I did not have a blackberry for work I would not buy the iphone simply because I do not have use in my personal life for every application or function. The smaller one may be better suited for me. However, it would be a hard sell still because I love the size of the larger one for viewing pleasure and the small form factor of the concept because I prefer small phones.
I contradict myself constantly, but in my mind it makes complete sense!

Actually Apple would probably use a different design: they keep each product well distinguished so there wouldn't be any confusion between products. I'm working on another design that uses a touchscreen =)

I've gone for a new :apple:tvish interface, what ja think?
