Hey guys, first Mac owner here.

Just got a 13" MB (going to be using it for college). Want to have a good case for my MBA, its a little big slippery and I dont want it to scratch in my computer backpack.

Any recommendations? Checking Apple online store, I'm kinda lost for Macs (I use a speck case for my iPhone and its good).

Pretty simple requirements...
-for new 13" MacBook Air
-good quality (doesn't scratch Mac)
-reasonably priced (most cases on Apple online store are $40-$80)

Again not looking for anything too fancy, just want one for putting it my bag/carrying around in college.

Thanks!

Might I recommend the ACME MADE Skinny Sleeve for your new MBA? I just got one for myself; it is very sleek, and adds very little bulk/weight to your computer. It's made of neoprene, and because there is no zipper, it is highly unlikely that you will scratch your computer. It feels very premium, and worth the $40.

Sorry if I wasn't clear before, looking for a case not a sleeve.

Also I've noticed many cases do not have the extra hole for the additional make for the 2013 MBA.

Anyone know one that has been updated?

Just my opinion, but the ACME sleeve quality is incredibly poor consider the price. It looks good, but it doesn't feel like it would last through much wear and tear.

i believe moshi monde has updated their hardshell cases.

I confess I haven't read this entire thread.

I'm looking for a backpack that will carry a mac air 13 with protection.
It will also need to carry one large and medium sized textbook plus a notepad.

Compact size but enough space to carry everything would be optimal.
I don't know what dimensions to look for.

Anybody have a nice one that fits the similar items?

Okay, so NONE of the main makers of MacBook Air hard cases have changed their cases to accommodate the mid-2013 13" MacBook Airs (extra microphone for noise cancellation, slightly changed top case).

That includes Moshi, Speck, InCase..

(The top case is not exactly the same as before. For example, the InCase Hammered Hard Shell does not quite clip on as it did with the pre-June 2013 13" model.)

Speck has already updated theirs...

From their site (also, I have already received a "revised" model):

SmartShell case fits MacBook Air (new June 2013 models plus late 2010-2012).View our MacBook Fit Guide
This applies to the SeeThru versions as well.

Their online copy says it fits both 2013 and previous, and having tried the InCase hard case version, I know it doesn't fit the top of the 2013, and it covers the 2nd microphone. Perhaps it was just that case.. Thanks.

Yeah, Speck took down their Macbook Air cases from their site while they "tested". They have been available for about a week now and the one I received does fit my 2013. The reason they say it fits both is because all they really did was make the opening on the left side bigger to accommodate the two mics.

Mamba slim 13

Anyone have this bag?
http://www.booqbags.com/us/briefs/mamba-slim/MSM13-GRY

I'm just curious how much space it has. I will mainly use it just to bring my MBA with me but occasionally I will use it to study. Will this bag fit a textbook thats between 1-2" thick?

They have a 15" bag so I could go with that if need be but I'd prefer the smaller bag if it'll fit my needs.

Just ordered my 13" Macbook Air (first apple product ever). I need a good shell case for it (already have a sleeve). Anyone have any input about the iPearl mCover? Good or bad. Also does it impede the ventilation of the device at all? Thanks all, excited to be a part of the Mac family!

My wife has the iPearl mCover on her 2012 11" Macbook Air. It's a decent shell and has held up fine (she does not baby her air). IMO, it's a bit on the cheap side in regards to build and looks (especially the feet), but it is also cheaper than a Speck or Moshi. The stand seems like a nice feature, but my Wife does not use it much if at all. As for heat, the cover does not affect the temps as far as I can tell.

Thanks so much for the input! If it's a bit cheap that leads me to believe it may be more prone to scratching the surface of the aluminum. I've seen the Speck case, going to go check out the Moshi case now

Got a Tom Bihn horizontal cache for my 11" Air. That goes into a Coach messenger bag that I picked up from their factory outlet store on clearance (plus an additional 50% discount).

The bag is just big enough to hold everything I need or want to carry without being too large.

can you post a pic of the new case for the 2013 version? i'm debating right now whether to get the speck or the moshi case. I'm also wondering when they'll be shipping these to apple retail stores?

So I've searched through the thread, and I couldn't find your impressions of the sleeve from Cocones. I'm thinking of getting this one, and I'd just like to know how you're liking the sleeve (I realise you bought this a while ago, but I figured then you would've used it for a while as a result). Since your also from Colorado, I feel like you can give me the best idea of how well it works out on our climate.

Hi. I apologize I that I missed this and didn't respond for so long. Due to some unexpected life circumstances, I have not found much time to be on this board or others lately.

I am sure that giving my impressions now, comes late, but in case you are still interested, here goes.

The sleeve is very well made, solid construction, and durable material. While it is a little tight at first, getting the MBA in an out, becomes easy with break in. It begins to fit like a glove. There is no sign of wear or scratches from the material, and it appears to offer good protection for a sleeve type case. My primary use of the sleeve is for taking the MBA with me on motorcycle trips. I put it in the sleeve and throw it in the panniers. The Cocones sleeve works well for my purpose. I haven't noticed any issues with the sleeve in our Colorado environment. All the materials have remained supple. No signs for drying or damage from UV. We don't have a moisture issue here of course, but I have always found wool to be ideal in dealing with moisture as well. I wear a merino wool base layer on my motorcycle, year round. Ultrathin in the summer, heavier as the weather cools. Merino is breathable and absorbent. If it does get wet, it won't stay waterlogged like leather will. Leather will absorb something like 300% of it's weight in water?

No worries about the late response, but thank you for getting back to me on this. I am indeed still interested in your opinion on it. Seems like all is well with this sleeve. Looks like I'll be purchasing it very soon.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Booq Mamba Slim for my MBA 13", I'll update with my thoughts on it in case anyone is interested.

Also FYI to anyone considering a Booq bag, if you also buy a iPad/MacBook case/sleeve and use the promo code AR14 they knock off $40. I got the mamba sleeve that was $35 so I basically got a free sleeve and a $5 discount on the bag (Got free shipping too, since the sleeve bumped the before discount total over $100).

I used this. Super padded and water resistant.

Anyone know if any shell cases, aside from the Speck line, has been updated to accommodate the secondary microphone hole? I went to Best Buy to look at the Incase hardshell and it was NOT updated, although chances are that Best Buy has old stock regardless.

Moshi Monde seems to have updated their hardshell case on their site. Detailed images show they've added a hole to accommodate for that extra microphone. I'm not sure if the Apple Store has the new ones since they do sell this product, so if you were to purchase it I'd probably just go through Moshi's site.
