I just got a 15.4" rMBP and thought hard about getting a 17" instead. But the real deciding factor for me was that I couldn't seem to find a refurbished 17" with a SSD.

iv'e had about four 17 inch models (2 unibodies, 2 previous models).

I now own the Retina.

I sort of miss the 17 inch BTW. But it was MUCH heavier (like about 2 lbs for the glossy). That's a lot actually.

If they brought back a slimed down retina 17, well..... i might just mess myself

I'd mess myself at the price of a 17" Retina, that's guaranteed.

I don't want them to thin it down I really don't want them to **** with it at all. I want an ethernet port, and express card slot, accessible RAM (preferably with 4 DIMM slots) accessible HDD's and an actual optical drive..

I want my Mac Pro for the road.

Where's the drooling emoticon....

It's never coming back. Everyone wants smaller and lighter these days.

I wasn't ready to give up on a 17" macbook pro yet. I bought a fully loaded one from macmall in January (they still have some 17 inchers left). I upgraded the ram to 16 GB 1600 MHz. I just upgraded the HDD to a Crucial 960 GB SSD. I plan on keeping this baby for a long time.

Looks like the Razer Blade Pro is your only option for a 17" portable powerhouse. :(

I use my 17" for school and music production and have never had an issue with it being "too big" (that's what she said). I'd like to see the slimmed down design with a 17" model. I don't think it is coming though :( One thing I would love is the option for dual SSD in the new MBP. Having a 160GB SSD and a 750GB HDD in my 17" has been paramount to my work. I'm not a fan of carrying around an external HDD

Your point is?

You just quoted me saying, "I'd like to see the slimmed down design with a 17" model." That is my point in relation to this thread. Maybe try reading what you quote. I have no comment as to whether it will or will not come back but that I would like to see it resurface.

But the former 17" Macbook pro was slim enough. :apple:

17" is barely large enough to be usable at a distance of more than 2.5 feet away from the screen at full resolution, which I do when I'm on dual displays. And it's not because I have bad eyes.

15" would make all text totally unreadable. So there SURE is a use for 17" displays.

I don't know what I'll do when this MBP dies.

----------

It will come back same week the cube comes back.

I'm not sure how you can't see that this argument comparing a larger MBP to a desktop computer is sort of very invalid.

----------

Wouldn't a 15" MBP (classic or retina) coupled with the an external display solve most of your issues?

I realize once you go mobile you lose the ability to use the external display but at least in your office you can leverage a large display.

I've never been a fan of the 17" as its too big, but I can understand the why a number of people do like them. The problem was that not enough people liked them. If apple was making sufficient profits from the sale of the 17" MBPs they'd never have killed it off. I think most consumers stayed away from it as its too large and/or could use an external drive as I mentioned.

I think people stayed away from it because the price was a huge step up. I bought the cheapest 2011 17" setup (except that I slapped an anti-glare display on it) and is was quite expensive. However, I would have been very happy to buy a lower spec'd Macbook if they had 17" anti-glare displays. I'm sure they would have sold a ton more if they had been available.

I'm sure they would have sold a ton more if they had been available.

Maybe/maybe not, at this stage we'll never know. Its all conjecture but by creating a lower spec 17" laptop Apple risked cannibalizing their 15" laptop sales. Perhaps it didn't matter or perhaps they never considered this, I don't know.

17 inch retina displays?

While I'm waiting patiently for the 17" to come back, does anyone know if someone is making 17" retina panels in the right price range that Apple could use?

I'm hoping that Apple just temporarily suspended the 17" MBPs until 17" retina displays are available at a reasonable price.

You save more on the 17".

Getting a refurbished 17" and buying an SSD for it, plus a RAID in the optical drive = tons of savings than what you pay for in a r-mb 15" with lesser specs for speed and storage. Just my experience. ^_^

The shiny red fruit company does what ever it wants and sometimes it doesn't make any sense, but the people just keep buying what ever they put out, so get your wallets out people, lets spend till there is no tomorrow! Bring it on. NOTHING can hurt their sales and reputation. No one knows anything but their CEO guy, mr.robot guy, what's his name? Don't try and think you know this or that about that company, just zip it and stick out those wallets yeah because the 17" MOTHER is going to return with vengeance! Or my name is not a name! *I like being a goofy nut*
