I know, off topic but I'm thinking that this is a sign of things to come for the iMac. Maybe next week at WWDC. 😉

I'm interested to see what they put in the high-end iMac. What GPU could they possibly put in the new high-end iMacs that would outdo they've put in the MBP? A 512mb 8600M GT? Perhaps they're looking at proper desktop GPUs for the top iMac? It'll be interesting, that's for sure.
 
THis is a great update imo

I don't need a mbp but I want one anyway because it seems to be so great! I feel like my inspiron 700m is sooo ollld now haha
 
All elements that should be upgraded have been upgraded. However it would have been nice (but unrealistic) to see a Blu-Ray drive and resolution independance. But I'm very happy with the new GPU and of course the other changes 😉 I'm gonna buy me one though; with a 7200rpm harddisk 😛
 
Like others, I'd like to see the new displays in action. I don't know enough about the GeForce cards to comment on those.

I'm quite happy with my current 15" 2.33 MBP purchased late April, and don't feel bad at all that I didn't hold out.

What would be more interesting is the new Mac Mini.

With all that talk that it will be discontinued it makes you wonder what will take its place.
 
I would have liked the VRAM to be 256/512 instead of 128/256, but it is still a better video card than the x1600, so I don't have much to complain about.
 
I was hoping for a machine which can reduce the number of machines I have, without compromise. This update delivers.

I'm currently running a 1Ghz TiBook with 512 MB as my home machine / music studio (+ firewire drive, if anyone was wondering). I'm also running a Compaq laptop for .NET development when I'm away from the office. I also run a Linux server on an ancient box, for development.

This is a HUGE upgrade on my TiBook (yay #1). It supports DX10 and thus _all_ of Vista's features (yay #2). It's fast enough to run a virtual machine or two via Parallels so that I can cross-develop without having to leave OSX (big yay #3).

I could've probably done all that with the last MBP (except for the fully feature Vista experience... whatever) but by the time I got super frustrated with my current setup, this update was just around the corner so I decided to wait. Glad I did.

I do have some concerns, but not many. I'm hoping they thoroughly tested the new LED screens and that they're top notch - this is largely new technology and I don't need to be burned by a premature release. The VRAM really should've started at 256MB with optional 512MB. That's it. Oh yeah... I'm not looking forward to paying for Leopard, but them's the breaks.

I'll be ordering one from home, tonight.
 
One of the best updates Apple has done to the Powerbook/MacBook Pro line. Upgraded Processor, platform, video, hard drives, and screens in 15".
 
Technically a good update and Apple did the best they could given what is available. However, I think they missed an opportunity as well. Nothing was very innovative in this update. No new case design with user replaceable hard drive. No user upgradeable video. Nothing really different from top spec Sony's and Dell's. I would have thought that something more "Appleish" was in the works. Guess I'll have to wait for the iMacs.
 
Not to take anything away from it, but I see this as mildly evolutionary, nothing overly exciting, just keeping up with basic trends & availability.

If I didn't have a (recent refresh) Blackbook, I might be interested enough, but I still have as much or more than I will need for the MB's expected lifespan. The only thing I'm doing for it is upping my RAM to 2Gb.

So, for $1399, I got effectively Monday's MBP, in a 13" form factor and a sexy black enclosure. I gave up a backlit keyboard and a standalone gpu. Santa Rosa? Even Intel can't get that excited about it.

I'll revisit it all at the next real revisions, not just the dot upgrades. Carbon fiber, OLEDs, and flash memory. That'll get my attention... 😉
 
As the owner of a Week 46 ('06) C2D I'm kinda torn. I knew I had to buy for my business last year so that I could expense it on this year's taxes, so what was available then was what I got (right around Christmas). I'm very happy with it - no whine/moo/RSD/etc. and only a few niggling problems (the fan likes to come out and play a lot). This update kinda took me by surprise especially with the nudges they gave the Macbooks. The one thing that stood out for me was the graphics card...MAN it'd be nice to wedge an 8600M into my setup. Beyond that, though, there's nothing that's really drawing me to want to whip out the plastic (and I'm broke as a MF joke right now, anyway!!)

Maybe when the Rev Ds come out I'll see what they throw in...but I'm happy with mine (I haven't even bootcamped my box - don't wanna waste the space on Windope!)
 
hey i have a 15" 2.16 c2d mbp, with 2gb ram and 160 gb hd....i really dont do all that much with it now.....how much difference would i notice with the new updates?

I don't think you will notice that much difference. I would wait for few more updates before changing your system.
 
good, i mean i love my mbp....i was just kinda sad i only had it till march....and to read some places...seems like they are so much better now....but really i wasnt about to spend another $2000 within 4 mos

"Nothing very innovative" is what I am used to now at Apple which is why I will buy one of these.

I'm sorry to hear that. What a sad indictment of the times. But Apple does have some innovative stuff like iPhone, :apple:TV, the new AirPort Extreme Base Station and the new iPod shuffle. They can do neat things but haven't in the Mac line for some reason. 🙁
 
I was hoping they'd redesign it a little and by a little i mean make the keyboard more like the macbooks. I prefer that keyboard but i want the specs of the pro (screen size, video card, hard drive etc). And somewhere deep inside I know they will redesign the keyboard as soon as I buy one of these things. I'll wait til next week to get mine though, after WWDC. I like the specs just not the keyboard.
