I think that the update is great, although I would've also liked a user-replaceable hard drive, but I have an external hard drive that I can store my data on for now. I would've liked a higher resolution 15" display, as the 17" is a bit out of my budget, even if it was only on the higher end 15" display. Although I do like that you can now put 4GB of ram in it now, that'll be handy with all the photoshop that I do. I also like the new GPUs, though I would've liked them to be 256/512MB also, but at least they are a lot faster than the X1600. And I also really like that they are using LED lit displays, hopefully the battery life will increase because of it, my MacBook Pro's battery life is horrible when compared to my old iBook's. Overall, it was a very good upgrade, and I think I'll be getting a higher end 15" within a week or two :).

MBP VRAM is user-upgradable? This is the first I've heard of such a thing.

Yes sorry Iam incorrect but still it seems like alot of money just for .20 GHZ and 128 MB more of video ram since I dont use any video editing or photo programs.

re: no built-in broadband mobile...
Most people do not use it. I certainly would not.

Now that's an interesting comment. You're saying most people would not use it because you would not? Pretty small sample, wouldn't you say? Or are you saying most people do not use it now? Yes, that's why I'm suggesting it be built-in -- so more people would use it.

Maybe Robson is already integrated in the new MBP and we didn't know it. It could be work when leopard or 10.4.10 will released. Could that be true?

The first months, we didn't know it that the second revision of the mbps support the "n" standard, but apple tells us and now it works.

Robson is the flash cache, I believe. I've read a few places that it doesn't speed things up near as much as simply adding more memory.

If I was in the market

If I was in the market, I would snatch one up quick. Like many people, I think the VRAM could have been better and the price difference between the low and mid seems outrageous (has anyone priced the processors, I know that Intel sometimes charges ridiculous prices for 200 MHz increases). Anyway, everyone enjoy their new machine.

Now the ultimate question, where's the 12-13.3" MBP?

This update will not make anyone more productive or able to accomplish anything different than the MacBook Pro's that were released last fall with the Intel Core 2 Duo. It makes me laugh when I read about everyone who has run out today and purchased the latest & greatest. A lot of these same people who were running out last fall & buying the latest & greatest. I'm tempted to compile a list showing the usual suspects.

Go back & review the threads from when the Intel Core 2 Duo's were released, you will see what I am talking about. A lot of these post sound like they were written by some silly giddy little girls.

My understanding is that these chipsets are 64bit (as opposed to the 64bit processor only previous versions) This means they'll not only be able to address more memory, but will have greater support for 64bit applications (is Logic Pro 64bit yet?) under leopard's 64bit OS goodness.

I guess it all depends on what you do with it, but they are an improvement in all regards on the previous generation. That said, I'd rather have incremental upgrades and live with the disappointment of never having my socks blown off (although first time I tried a MBP I was appropriately impressed), but it frees people to buy stuff when they need it without risking being completely antiquated when they release a new one.

Well this is my first post on my brand new MacBook, so here it goes! :D

The MBP update is really solid. They upgraded everything that needed it, although arguably the video memory could have been a big bigger (256/512Mb), but I think these are an excellent buy and very future proof.

256MB vram and I would be all for it, now I'm just 80% or so for it, but with ADC price it's still decent spec/price. Will suck in 4-5 months thought, as always :D

Not a bad update for me.

Higher res 15" would have been nice. Leopard will make use of it.
Magnetic latch might have been good - less moving parts and less fiddly.
A new port like sata would have been good.
No HDMI this time. Maybe next incarnation.
GPS still lacking...
No secondary screen yet for widgets and alarms...

Greener Apple

I'm happy that Apple switched to an LED LCD. Mercury in a computer? Really? Is that necessary? No. Thank you Apple for becoming greener.

Are you getting it through Higher Education contract discount? Do you have any idea how to access this remotely (away from the university network)? I did have a link but now it says it won't work

For the higher education link you have to be connected to the Uni network, this can be through VPN.

Once you are connected you can go to http://promo.euro.apple.com/edu/hed/routing/uk/index.php then you will need to select your area and University.

In regards to the update, well it has gotten me to thing about selling my iMac 20" Core 2 Duo to buy a 15.4" MBP so it must be a good upgrade.

Sounds like a great update though i would agree with some, a new shell for the macbook probably would have been a welcome addition. i just dont like the white plastic. i've been tempted to buy a G4 powerbook for on the go sort of stuff. i have a G5 i do video editing on so i dont need a fast MB:rolleyes: ...but, with the way things are going the only thing my G5 will have up on these soon is more HD space! also has anyone seen the new LED display in person? i'd just like to know how good it looks.

I like the improvements well enough. The only upgrade that truely interests me is the LED Display. The VRAM and SR processor being an improvement I don't understand nor do I remember. Someone trying to explain it to me just comes out sounding like technobabble to me.

I was looking forward to Apple including an Hybrid Hard Drive like the Samsung or Seagate but after looking at various drawbacks of said drives, I don't know anymore.

user-replaceable HD woud have been nice, especially after ones applecare expires.

It's frustrating I just bought a macbookpro 3 weeks ago.It is the best laptop I have ever owned.I have vista on it and the speed of the macbook is amazing.I played the Demo of Doom on it and it works fine.I know they have faster graphic chips in the new one but I paid like 3,000 for my new one.

I believe it's a pretty solid update and if I was purchasing a laptop in the near future, I'd be very tempted!

Great update, I think. Only a couple of things were missing. There should really be a bto graphics option in the low end. Also, I was hoping for a redesign, only because of some negative things I've heard about the MBP's current case as far as durability goes (casing being too thin, denting, etc.) I was also really hoping that SR would support more than 4gig of ram, just for future-proofing purposes, but for now, it's more than enough machine for me. Let's hope I can still say the same in a few years. :D

On a separate thought, has anyone seen any reviews or comments on the heat produced by these things? I'd like to be able to use my "laptop" in my lap. :p
