I didn't want to read through all the messages here but after about 20 I'll assume no one said it. Why did Apple have an event for the newest Macs? Even these guru hosts that ramble on about nothing were this clueless? Apple had an event this time for one reason. Marketing! If you heard there last earnings report sales of Mac computer are down 30%! 30% sales declines of any established product are just not that common (nor are sales increases) Apple saw an opportunity to make a strong case for increased speed and battery life to both 1. take advantage of the Holidays to jump start sales and 2. Get ahead of recent announcements that the next round of intel chips were about to be either as fast or faster depending on which tests etc. then the current M2 chips.

These events are not for anyone like us on a tech related website talking about tech, they exist to generate buzz for products. When they do quiet introduces for upgrades and such we know same day. the rest of world learns about the upgrades word of mouth. When they hold an event like Scary Fast the story is picked up by all news reporting websites, publications and they're introduced as major breaking stories on network TV etc. Hell I was seeing stories everywhere reporting about the shot on iPhone side story. Its marketing which leads to sales and I'll be they claw back all of the lost sales of late for a brief period.

Well, from what I've been seeing, the benchmarks are totally unreliable presently. We will just have to wait.

And sure, Intel is not the tech darling it used to be, and just maybe it will fail in dramatically, which everyone wants because it's so much fun!
No one wants intel to fail. Not only it’s not fun, it would be of zero benefit to Mac users. Intel failure would be nothing but detrimental to the pc market in general.

Macs are somewhat irrelevant and mostly due to apple absurd greed, as frequently mentioned, in memory and storage cost. In some professional environments it is tolerated, but to a very limited degree, thus in the global market spread Mac’s are hardly visible. I also would wish for governments (EU would be a good candidate) to throw mandates at A. prohibiting sales of „disposable” product by ensuring modularity. For both, customer interest and environmental protection. So as to render the next „Mother Earth” episode just a bit less laughable.

Wait until you find out about Windows on ARM and Snapdragon looking to emulate Apple’s System-on-a-Package

This shouldn’t have been an announced “event”. Imagine if Apple had just released a video out of the blue announcing M3 and the new machines. People would have been excited. Apple’s big problem is that they build anticipation when they announce an ”event”. If Apple had just dropped the video sometime during the day it would have made news and created buzz. Instead, we just got disappointment.
"Disappointment"??

The M3 chips are outstanding, and they actually produced the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max all at the same time, which is an absolutely phenomenal feat, especially because the M3 Pro is not a simple doubling of the M3, like we saw in M1 and M2. It was absolutely worth an event.

People must have some ridiculously unrealistic expectations to have found that disappointing. I, on the other hand, went into the event with proper expectations that we'd be seeing M3 machines, and was genuinely surprised to see simultaneous release of M3 Pro and M3 Max, and I came away excited.

Perhaps you should turn your scorn toward whoever fed your clearly unrealistic expectations. Were you misled by a specific site? If so, maybe next time you should remember that they were unreliable forecasters and stop paying attention to their pronouncements. And if it was just you, without any help from outside, maybe next time remember *that*.

The only disappointment anybody could reasonably have had is that Apple stuck with the old iMac colors. But honestly, Apple has gotten so color-phobic, any new colors they'd have chosen would probably have been awful.

I have not watched one of these before. I tried. But I got 5 minutes in and the man on the right was just too difficult to watch. Not sure what, but somehow uncomfortable feeling and I had to turn it off. Sorry Dan. I like most of your videos. Not this one.

I bought the 15” M2 air from BestBuy for $903 (certified excellent condition used). Such a steal and I’m blown away by the performance, form factor and battery life. My advice to anyone concerned about the Apple tax: don’t buy new.

I agree completely with Hartley’s points about events. The event could have been done as a press release like the predecessor announcement with all his reasons. His argument was so valid. I like speak of his mind method😊 I also agree with Dan that the event could be done at 1pm EST instead of 8pm EST. I could understand his reason as well. Their point of view on new Macs were on target.
Enjoy their podcast. Great job!!

Last may I found and bought a new, sealed 14” M2Max 32/1TB for $2100-. (Facebook marketplace)

My disappointment was with the memory and storage configurations especially for the iMac. I thought with M3 we would finally get off that 8/256 hump but at minimal they would offer the a bump in the other configurations - but nope - all 3 "standard" configurations still are at 8GB. That doesn't bode well for the M3 MBAs later. Wether you think 8GB is enough or not, charging $1699 (the top iMac standard configuration) and getting just 8GB/512GB when other manufactures give you twice that or more at half the cost is frustrating.

I think within two months there's going to be rather noteworthy competition. Intel will unveil the Core Ultra on Dec 14 and apparently it has been shipping to PC makes for months and you will be able to buy comparable Intel machines for half of what Apple charges.

It's just such a price discrepancy. Apple doesn't even have a snappy design any more, and although it's very nice stuff, many basic Intel machines come with 32gb, 1tb ,3k 120hz displays, for around $1500. These are rebranded Meteor Lake.

$1500 hundred for a machine that's comparable to MacBook Pro costing over $3k. There's always been the Apple tax, but it looks like it's been creeping up ever since Intel dropped the ball 10 years ago.

And Qualcomm just unveiled the Snapdragon Elite X that, if their numbers are true, is more powerful than M2Max being 30% more efficient. It's even more powerful (3227 in Geekbench) than M3Max in single thread (3220, max score listed) The moment Windows starts getting serious on ARM support, so Win laptops start getting 20h with the performance of a desktop, people will start thinking twice about Macbooks as the main reason to get them vs any other laptop is the amazing performance/efficiency they have. Oh and Nvidia is about to getinto this aswell with powerful ARM CPU + their own GPUs combination.

I’d much rather watch an event like that than skim through a dull press release that fails to get across the impact of the changes. If people aren’t wanting to spend time on an event, they are free to read up on it aftwards.

While listening to Hartley’s complaint about the event my first thought was “get some rest grumpy grandpa”, then I had to wonder if it would have been better to read a summary article rather than listen to the podcast (or or watch the video if that’s how you engage). There wasn’t much substantial in that episode that couldn’t have been just an article so maybe the complaint could apply to both the event and the article about it.

I do generally like the Dan and Hartley show but this was more of a complaint session that anything interesting.

I don't see it. I just looked on Amazon UK and I could buy an M1 Mac mini for around £500. I really don't feel this is in any way overpriced, it is far and away better than any similar Windows machine. It is a fairly low-priced entry into the macos system and is a powerful bit of kit. I've never known the price of entry so low.

I'm guessing you are talking about the refurbished the 2020 M1 Mac mini with 8GB memory and 256GB SSD going for £527 on amazon uk.

It's a 3 year old system, with 8GB memory (which seems to be the norm in most new android phones these day). Its basically closer in specs to a phone, that it is to modern desktop. I completely disagree that this is far better than any PC you could build for a similar amount in November 2023. less than 5 minutes of searching, found me a Ryzen 7 NUC with 16GB ram and a 500GB SSD. the 5800H chip beats the M1 significantly in Geekbench 6, both single and multicore. All for roughly £350.

But, it's fair you think it's a good deal. You can't really argue with how somebody feels right? And who am I to say how much value you should assign to getting an entry to MacOS.

For me, looking at things I can actually directly compare, all I can say is that, to me, paying 400 quid for a 1TB to 2TB SSD upgrade is ridiculous in a world where a blistering fast Samsung 990 Pro is about 150 quid. I can then ponder until the sun goes down, on the value of things I can't really measure. Such as, how much it's worth that I get to run Final Cut, which is by far my favourite editor for the hobby editing I mock around with. Or, how much it's worth for me to get to run MacOS and have the great integration in the ecosystem I am so heavily invested in.

This is all subjective though, and really just me rationalising to myself why its OK I keep handing Tim Apple the lube.

Im not sure what he's going on about, but I watched the M2s and M2 MBPs being announced in a video event, not in a press release, just like I just did with the M3s and M3 MBPs.

One of the beauties of Capitalism…. If the overall Apple experience isn’t for you, go ahead and buy the Intel. Bye bye.

The new iMac has no pro motion (is it too weak for 120Hz?) and a too small screen. I’ll wait for something bigger and better.

I still feel the overall Apple Experience is superior to any competitor out there. I have never expected to buy a system at “cost” as some of the complainers onboard apparently expect. An external SSD is in no way the same thing as a fully integrated internal SSD. But, if that crappier (IMHO) Intel experience is what you want, go for it.

The example with M2 Pro/Max 14"/16" MBP now a M3 Pro/Max model proves all the M2 critics were right, just wait and something better will come along. I just wish it would happen faster with other Mac models so that this marketplace is even more competitive. ;)
By that “logic” one would never buy anything. The complainers on this and other forums seem to resent technological progress. There is always “something coming”.

Just for clarity, I wasn't comparing the cost of the SSD upgrade to an external SSD. I was comparing it to a full fat, best of class internal NVME SSD.

Secondly, if you read my posts in this thread. You will find I have intel based workstations to supplement my macs , as I need more compute (especially on the gpu side) than Apple can deliver.

However, you will also find, I still have macs though, I recently bought both an m2 max studio and the 15 inch mba.

So, yes, I value the experience enough to over pay. But, the limit of how much Apple tax people are willing to pay for that experience is individual. And the steady decline in Mac sales could imply that the greed might have gotten a bit too far. There are other factors ofcourse. But, it would be pretty naive to think they aren’t loosing sales on the 2019ish base specs and cost to upgrade from them.

The M2 mini Pro can support 32GB of memory but the M3 Pro chip seems to only support 36GB of memory. I was hoping for 64GB of memory like I have in my 2018 Intel mini. The mini is used as a file server and the large memory serves as cache for incoming data as the raid transfer speed is not super fast. May wait for the M4 mini. Scuttlebutt is implying the M4 MacBook Pros might have the next generation screen plus a major new chassis design. Both my M1 Max 14" MacBook Pro (64GB and 4TB SSD) and M1 Ultra Mac Studio (128GB and 8TB SSD) are doing a great job for me. In theory, by M4, these would be even faster with more memory capability.

Maxing out the build specs at order time gave me a relatively future proof computer inventory out to three or four generations before the equipment seems older than dirt. After all, my 2012 MacPro trash can (six Intel core processor model with 128GB OWC ram and 2TB OWC SSD) did the job for over ten years and the fan was quiet.

First, what scorn? I just said the announcement was disappointment.

Second, I had no expectations. But considering it was a never-before-held night time “event” I expected SOMETHING else, even some kind of juicy Apple TV+ announcement, or something unexpected. Everything they announced was expected and easy to guess.

Third, do you work for Apple? You’re selling the chips better than they did.
