Perhaps it’s the wrong word, but I mean that there are disincentives use the device around other people, whereas mobile phones and regular displays are currently much more socially acceptable. If you have limited leisure time and a partner who isn’t particularly into immersive entertainment, Apple Vision Pro is unlikely to see much use.

To be clear there’s no hate here. XR technologies fascinate me, as does the history of their adoption.

Yeah, I think stigma was the wrong word, but not too far off now that I understand your thought. What you note is valid. People can sit side by side staring at their phones ignoring one another and that will be seen as normal. Put a headset on one of them, but leave everything else the same, and it will bother some people as "isolating". That should be solved over time with better/less-intrusive-looking technology. FWIW, the device wasn't made to be used in social contexts, but it is excellent at bringing virtual socialization to isolated environments.

I agree with most of the points, especially that the VP will have to become lighter and less expensive for it to be adopted more widely. That's something on which there's almost universal consensus.

But the comments about not being able to wear it for more than an hour or so illustrate how much individuals vary and how subjective the impressions are. I routinely use mine for three times that without removing it and have no discomfort afterward. Not that I wouldn't mind a lighter version, but this hasn't been a problem for me.

This also applies to the real-world benefits of the M5 model. I've read everything from "absolutely no change" to "dramatic improvements." I haven't tried the new VP yet – maybe I'm afraid I'll like it too much, LOL.

I concur with the sentiment that Apple's marketing was misguided. The VP shouldn't have been pitched as a major shift in the way we use computers (although it was for one device). There should have been even more emphasis on real use cases and on things the VP does that no other Apple device can do.

I don’t know, on reddit I keep reading that the difference is not that noticeable, and on YT and Mac sites that is worthy of “giving it another chance”. I think I’ll trust reddit on this one, although I am being tempted to sell my M2 for an M5.
I just use it for watching movies, and I’m a bit frustrated at the HDR rendering, is not a bright at it should be, I don’t even notice a difference between SDR and HDR to be honest. But the big screen theater in your home experience is undeniable awesome.
I think I’ll wait for a good theatrical video app in Galaxy XR, hopefully Skybox will release in that platform, and I’ll try that instead of going M5.

to elaborate on my last comment (thank you for elaborating on yours)- this devices strikes me as a device to be used on one’s own, whether for work or leisure. particularly at this price point, I cannot imagine folks wanting to travel with it, even to their primary workplace. Apple definitely has some public use cases advertised on their website (watching a movie on an airplane quickly comes to mind), but, Apple’s had plenty of advertised use cases for its products that have quickly come & gone. the market dictates what a product ultimately is (e.g. Apple Watches were not primarily marketed as fitness/health devices early on, now it’s practically all they’re advertised for)
I totally disagree and one of the major benefits is being able to be involved in shared experiences, especially work related. It's just not many apps are available, but if you know what can be made for this and other high end XR headsets you will be able to see how amazing the future will be. Its basically unlimited once you add in AI.

For me the VP is for work not consumer, and don't understand why Apple go to the easy stuff like media consumption to promote it.

IDK!!!

We have a company that's IMO investing a LOT in R&D given it marks things up HEAVILY (always has) and makes ~25c for every dollar or revenue.

Is this and a canned Apple Car the focus? I feel Apple coulda done better.

The reviewer says: "It's just not something I want to wear for more than an hour even if it was comfortable, because I want to come back to reality."

Reality is overrated. Give me the isolation of the Vision Pro while I'm working.
As someone with serious ADHD issues, the AVP has been a godsend for me. I can just put it on, sit in an immersive environments (that’s not home) and focus on what i need to focus on without distractions. It’s what i do to relax at home.

I know I’m in the minority of people and this is a very niche product, but after having mine, I couldn’t imagine my life without it. Even my 65 inch tv seems small in comparison. Watching dune part 2 in 4k in what looks like an imax sized screen is just…an experience man. I love it

Dan looks great lately. Lost a lot of weight - you can tell he's worked for it. Good job.

Now AVP avatar - LOL - I will refuse to ever talk to something like that - NO.

Struggled to follow the logic of opening a Home Screen easier making watching a full feature film using AVP more manageable. Why wasn't it there when it launched? It's called iterative innovation. The adoption friction comes from price and the form factor - people use their eyes to make eye contact with others - builds trust, relationships, attraction, etc. Hiding this with some snorkeling mask is a deal breaker.
Many personal compute, are productive, and want to seek low private/focused/more optimal ways to do so as well that doesn’t need to be communal.

Communal spatial computing devices exist and cost thousands more you can look into like Brelyon’s $5000-$12,000 offerings, Sony’s, and Looking Glass Factory’s spatial/hologram displays as examples.

A Vision Pro enabling a portable 5K2K monitor for a Macbook or allowing you to run several iPad apps at once spatially involving private/sensitive/confidential stuff is one of those examples.

Many who multi task or run various screens/windows at once are more able to do so more easily and seamlessly via spatial computing

Price, often expounded, is no deal breaker for me. Function (waiting on something to define my own principal use case, perhaps) and comfort absolutely are. I will give the in store trial a shot again early next year but will wait on WWDC26 to see more of Apple’s strategy.

Edit: I seek this device for work, not leisure. I have zero interest in it as a unique iPad. Figured I should spell that out! If your use case differs, your valuation differs…

But they’re faster, and have new icons 🤷‍♀️

Someone needs to tell Apple that it wasn’t a technical reason that they failed. Jobs instinctively understood that stuff and without solid use-cases that made sense would never have released it. Competing with Meta is not a use-case Tim.
It’s a prosumer standalone headset giving those who want to explore spatial computing to get meaningful computing done a serious option (Galaxy XR the only other option) as well as one actually comparable with traditional devices to render non-gaming media at professional/ideal quality including spatial content.

The Meta headset doesn’t fulfill that being primarily for budget gamers not even on par with the current gen of games, doesn’t have HDR, uses an mobile APU instead of a laptop APU; and uses a non-ideal resolution for everything but games.

Even if you overlook the lack of HDR as far as video content, it uses an archaic format for 3D movies compared to the Vision Pro’s MV-HEVC format which is a substantial upgrwde.

The dual knit band is shipping or store pickup Dec 10. I'm assuming most everyone bought one for their M2

Your comment just inspired me to order the part for my M2 — €115 well spent!
Delivery in Europe is estimated between December 10 and 17, so it should arrive before Christmas. Perfect!

The shopping experience was, once again, a delight: with the iPhone or iPad, your head gets scanned to find the right band size. This time I ended up with an M instead of the S I had for my M2. Hopefully, my head hasn’t actually grown!

Imagine me. Traveling 75% of the year. Mostly only with cabin luggage less than 10 kg. Staying in hotels with crappy TV. Missing my 65" OLED TV for movies and my 43" monitor at home for working. Carrying big 15,6" and heavy notebook.

If there was a huge cinema screen and computer monitor with superb image quality which would fit into my cabin luggage...
I want AVP. I already tested it in Apple Store. I'm very impressed.

This was actually one of my first trips with my Vision Pro. Had to go out of town. Stayed in a hotel with crappy cable on a 32inch tv. But i was happy as a clam because i brought my Vision Pro and MacBook and couldn’t wait to play with it.

I remember that weekend watching blade runner 2049 in 4k 3d laying down in what looked like a massive theater screen. Then after i jumped on Mac virtual display and did a little work before bed on a large virtual screen with my laptop across the room and simply a Magic Trackpad on my side and a keyboard on my lap. Was a memorable weekend because i remember how badly I didn’t want to leave town but i ended up enjoying it.

I think this product fits very well for people that travel a lot

When I worked at Apple (tech support Austin) they released the Cube which led to better things. I kind of like it when Apple screws around 👍

Maybe they such market it as such because I am sold on that concept. If traveling alone it’s a nice option. Dumb question can you use it on a jet?

Yes you can. I haven’t personally used it on a plane but I’ve heard good things.

I HAVE used it on road trips when someone else is driving and I’m just bored in the passenger seat chillin. Travel mode activated and you’re good to go. When i was on my Oregon trip (lots of hours in the car) i remember watching movies and controlling the Reddit app to browse around. It was weird because when you are in a cramped seat and you put it into an environment, it looks like you’re in the middle of a park or on the moon or something and you have all this space to move around. I kept forgetting I couldn’t extend my arm out and do things lol

But yeah it was really cool. I remember having it on for a 3 hour drive and i watched a little bit of avatar and browsed Reddit. Made time fly. And then i remember the next trip i made to Seattle I didn’t bring it with me and i was just watching stuff on my phone and i just…couldn’t do it. It couldn’t keep my attention and my neck hurt looking down at my phone for so long. Surprisingly, the solo knit on the Vision Pro has been my go to. Longest I’ve worn it is 5 hours without issue. I just reclined the passenger seat back a little bit and put a giant movie screen in the sky. It’s nice because obviously it doesn’t require holding anything. You just lay back and watch

I totally agree.

What VP actually is, and remains so today, is really at odds with how Apple tried to position it at launch.
Somehow they missed the mark on what they had.

I think they are still missing the mark on not doing all they can to incentive developers on VisionOS.

This needs to be fixed like "yesterday" 👇

Yet Jobs released a dozen+ flops during his time at Apple.

With 400,000 AVPs sold, I would hardly call that failing. Especially as a niche product.

I just have one word for the Vision. Wifi6. How can Apple be so stupid and not use the 6G band at least 160Mhz. Just crazy, like a Ferrari with wooden wheels.
