- FIX TYPING—namely autocorrect/QuickPath, cursor moving, and consistent behavior across apps
- remote mode where I can use my iPhone virtually via my other Apple devices on the same network (so that I can leave it charging and only use my iPad Mini at home)
- Files app—auto selective sync folders with Mac via local wifi (not internet/iCloud)
- when Watch is detected, option to automatically receive all alerts only on Watch even when using phone (I hate pop-up alerts/banners)
- this is probably a watchOS thing but a Watch alert when iPhone goes out of range (I think there was a reason this isn’t a feature but can’t remember—maybe it would require constant pinging which would require too much battery, or there would be too many false positives)
- CarPlay—option to not show incoming notifications on car screen, and option to customize multi-app view (I especially don’t want to be forced to display my upcoming calendar events on the car screen for all the passengers to see, what the hay)
- landscape orientation for home/lock screen and ability to lock landscape orientation

PLEASE GOD PUT THE FLASH ON/OFF/AUTO TOGGLE BACK ON THE TOP LEFT OF CAMERA APP. INSTEAD OF BURYING IT IN THE TRAY. I USE IT ALL THE TIME. PAIN.

It used to be there. Now the flash icon on top left only toggles flash auto/off.

I need the ON option back up there
Just curious, does it ever not flash when you want it to flash? Just wondering because the auto has been very good for me. Also I recently realized that while in auto, the flash icon turns yellow when it senses it needs to flash, so it’s never a surprise.

@Hartley Well, when I start typing my haircut appointment, the iPhone pretty much fills it for me: the address, the approximate time. I don't see why it would not be the same for your dentist appointment.

11. in Mail give us the option to NOT go to the next email when you are deleting an email but to go back to the inbox. Those who want to keep things the way they are should be able to turn this feature off.
This. Maybe a small thing, but I find it annoying that a different e-mail is opened when I am deleting an e-mail.

Get rid of the non- *FEATURE* on the front Lock Screen that allows for a long press to change the Lock Screen. CX & UI best practice would be that when the phone is *LOCKED* if can be changed. It is a completely impractical place to be able to make changes to the config.

Widgets on the Lock Screen.
Rotation to landscape, with the icons staying still.
Messages preview showing "You: " before any messages that are yours.
Message preview showing last TWO messages.
Messages Favourites with preview.
App Library folder with all non-desktop apps.
Accessibility to allow 5x3 icons instead of 6x4.
Folders to allow 2x2 instead of 3x3, similar to App Library.
Battery "icon" removed option for just a number for clarity.
Weather widget allowing scroll-swipe hourly forecast.
Weather widget gains precipitation percentage.
Tapping time opens Clock.app.
Enlarge Previous App target in clock upper left corner.

And that's just the top-of-mind stuff.

I wouldn't mind if they took a year off between major versions, and rewrite the whole OS (frameworks, apps, everything, or at least as much as possible) in Swift, SwiftUI, and Metal. It's their new, great programming language, so put your money where your mouth is. I realize rewriting a whole OS in a new language is labor intensive, but that's why I suggest taking a year off between major releases to do it. Sure, bug fixes in between, but take the time to actually make it great.
The good news is that other than 'taking a year off', they have been refactoring a significant code into Swift and SwiftUI, justifying it partially by combining the code bases between iOS, iPadOS and macOS versions.

There have been new controls added, such as UIColorPickerViewController, which are actually SwiftUI views (ColorPicker) wrapped up and exposed for UIKit developers.

Swift as a language is not yet suitable for lower level programming (such as hardware drivers), but I assume this is one reason why there has been a focus both on C++ interoperability and on stronger controls on object borrowing/copying.

Having changes held back from shipping until the whole organization was ready would have a lot of unintended consequences that would both slow development and likely increase the risk of severe bugs. As crazy as it sounds, with software it really is less risky to change the tire while still going down the highway.

Totally agree with it making no sense that Apple can’t do 2 things at once, we never heard that because they had a team working on a car that they couldn’t also improve iOS.
More like, "because they are building an AR version of Mail, the Mail team isn't adding smart folders to iOS until next year".

Apple has tons of shockingly tiny software teams.

Also I’ve said it before about the dynamic island, just because Face ID and the front facing camera eventually disappear under the screen doesn’t mean the DI has to also go away. It can show more content and disappear entirely when there’s no live activity running or notification coming in. No reason to get rid of such a useful feature when it will only get better with more space in the future.

Yep, dynamic island is IMHO a new line of thought on notifications to also include 'backgrounded' active tasks. The current incarnation is built to take advantage of the oblong hole-punch, but if the hole goes away down the road they can decide to offer more dynamism.

For iOS 17 I want a few things.

1. Let us remove that Homebar wart once and for all.
Homebar wart?

2. Interactive widgets, as they used to be.
Almost certainly not under consideration. Widgets are basically static pictures generated by the underlying application several times a day in the background, which is then killed off. There's nothing to interact with. Interaction requires starting the program, which is why they chose to have taps run the program in the foreground.

3. Home Screen customization like we have with the lock screen. Icon placement, custom icons w/o shortcuts, customizable dock, iPad dock where your last used icons pop up (this has worked great for years on jailbroken phones and is one of my all time favorite tweaks). Think of how on the watch we can have all the different faces, imagine different Homescreens like an Astro theme, solar, weather, wayfinder, etc. We’ve been able to do this for years on a little watch screen but the iPhone Homescreen is virtually the same as it was in 2008 with the exception of wallpapers 🤣.
There's an awful lot there. Some of this (icons w/o shortcuts) just won't happen as long as Apple is the only one who could built that UX. 90%+ of customers wouldn't use this, and some percentage of them would shoot themselves in the foot by accidentally triggering it.

4. Improved notifications.
I'm sure they are taking suggestions 🤣

It seems to prefer night mode rather than flashing for me. Very frustrating because it seems to prefer night mode when the subject is dynamic (e.g. pictures of my dog)

Oh hmm maybe it’s just that I prefer night mode over flash. I find flash makes pictures look unnatural so I see them as a last resort. And so far I haven’t found any auto night mode pictures so dark that I wished for flash, so it’s been good for me.

Granted, but there is zero chance that a night mode picture would turn out with a moving subject. It is an area they could be more adaptive to (especially if they are going to hide user controls.)

agree with what they were saying about notifications. for apple being so ecosystem friendly why they don't let you do it for all devices.

Yeah I still find it amusing seeing people shoot video in Portrait - guess it's useful for viewing on your phone (and Tiktok), but useless everywhere else!
Ok for tablets too. I used to make fun of friends for shooting portrait video, but as people have started to mostly watch on their phone anyway, my mocking has lost its zing.

Yeah I don't make a big deal out of it, but for me I'd want to be able to watch it on TV or upload to Youtube, and you get much more sense of the scene with the wider ratio imo.

Did you know even YouTube has started supporting vertical video? But yes I prefer landscape too, and think it’s better for most video subjects. But I suppose vertical is technically be better for capturing video of tall subjects. And some types of content, eg. a 10 second pet video, will probably only ever be watched on a phone and never make it to a landscape screen. So I’m not against making exceptions. But for sure, no biggie and to each their own.
