That's actually the definition of "innovation"...Apple never really did "innovation". What they do is look at what's already on the market and think, "How can we do this better." That was true with the iPhone. There were dozens of different mobile phone manufacturers on the market for decades. But Apple re-thought what a consumer would want in a mobile device. Same thing with the iPad. Same thing with VisionPro. Heck, it was the same with the first Macintosh.
You must not get out much.I've yet to see a Samsung foldable in the wild so my guess is not yet.
Newspapers have obvious creases as well and people don’t particularly mind it.I just can't get over the crease. How do people who have foldables get over that really obvious crease in the middle which always bangs you over the head that it is a foldable phone. I think the multi-tasking features and based on the demos I've seen from Samsung it looks really nice, but if we are going towards a future where Foldables reign supreme (As was suggested on this episode which made me shake my head a little), how are they going to get pass the obvious flaw?
The crease is like the notch, it basically disappears when you view the inner display. Especially on the newer foldables. The only time you really notice it is if there are bright lights above your phone, which in my case pretty much never happens. Also, on the modern foldables, you can hardly even feel the crease anymore, which is nice. People say the crease gets worse over time, and that is most likely true. But, I've owned a few different foldables for one year and I've never seen this happen. Anything over a year, I cannot speak for.I just can't get over the crease. Even if someone can pay 2k for a phone… I think it’s better to keep some money or invest it in another thing like if you plan to buy a MacBook then you can maybe buy a MacBook Pro or something…I think many will buy it, but not as many who bought regular - un-foldable - iPhones.
I'm not saying there isn't any demand, but I doubt this gonna be mainstream in any way.
I can get an iPad and an iPhone for $2k. and I won't be worrying about how long the foldable LCD screen will last if I keep opening it about a 100 times per day.
so this is not my thing, but that doesn't necessarily mean that there ain't anybody out there who'll be dying for it.
still I think this'll be likely some niche thing.
and while I do understand and admire the level on engineering and craftsmanship that goes into such a device, people shouldn't pay $2k for a phone. any phone.

The Fold7 is significantly thinner than the Fold6, so it wouldn’t be too bad if it became a bit thicker again. The Apple Fold is rumored to be exactly that, at 9.6 mm, vs. the Fold7 at 8.9 mm.The next fold 8 is supposed to have a creaseless design similar to what Apple is going to use, be interesting if that design increases the weight and thickness a bit. I don't think the lack of cameras will impact it as greatly considering this is basically a folding iPhone Air.
Book style, bi-foldables are meant to be a mini tablet and phone in one device. They are not meant to replace a full size tablet. Only the tri-folds, which I am not interested in, are meant to replace the larger tablets.Even if someone can pay 2k for a phone… I think it’s better to keep some money or invest it in another thing like if you plan to buy a MacBook then you can maybe buy a MacBook Pro or something…
I don’t see the point to get a bigger screen on a phone, it’s still very small compared to a tablet so it won’t really replace the iPad… Since the display is in a cubic form… normal videos won’t be bigger… or you will need to watch some 4:3 videos (rare)…
MageSafe is strong enough to hold it unfolded, IMO. Especially if the stand also uses the orientation magnet. Also, how in the world will MagSafe work with this thing? My 15 Pro spends a lot of the day on a MagSafe stand charger on my desk, and overnight on another one at home. If you can only put it on a stand like this while it's folded, that sort of ruins the point of it, too.
I feel like a broken wheel repeating this, but no, it’s not really mini-sized, due to the different aspect ratio. It will also be significantly heavier. It's mini sized!
The iPhone 13 mini was 5.4 inches and the iPad mini 7 is 7.7 inches, so this is just 0.1inches bigger in both form factors(5.5 and 7.8 inch).
The small number of people who loved the mini will likely be super interested... I am.
I was saying this as someone who was always a bit annoyed by the creases on newspapers, because unlike books, newspaper creases go straight through the text.So do books, but people flip newspapers and books so it's part of the design. I think it's a little different on Cell Phones, but maybe not.
I think the Apple Fold mockup on the left is in the ballpark, but far too wide. It will be a passport style foldable with similar dimensions as the original Pixel Fold, if the rumored dimensions ring true anyway.I feel like a broken wheel repeating this, but no, it’s not really mini-sized, due to the different aspect ratio. Fold on the left, mini on the right:

The mockup is based on the leaked dimensions and resolutions. It is correct, unless those leaks are significantly wrong. Furthermore, these dimensions actually make sense to make the inner screen more attractive for widescreen video.I think the Apple Fold mockup on the left is in the ballpark, but far too wide. I hope they go with iPhonebook.I wonder what name Apple will give to the new device.
It definitely won’t be called iPhone Fold, even though I personally think that would be quite a fitting name, since, in a way, it feels like the company is “folding”, meaning giving up on true innovation.
But in any case, it won’t be iPhone Fold, for at least these two reasons:
1. Just like Apple’s VR headset isn’t called Apple VR, but Apple Vision Pro. They will come up with something Apple like.
2. Apple no longer names new devices “iSomething,” but rather “Apple Something.” This gives them a chance to name this device in a completely new way and clearly separate it from the iPhone and iPad.
Even if I don’t like foldable’s concept, I gotta admit, I’m interested to see what they come out with.
Understood. If the form factor rings true for the Apple Fold, it is going to turn a lot of people off being that wide. There's no way that could fit comfortably in regular sized jeans/shorts/pants pockets. It would be nearly two inches wider than the original Pixel Fold, which I owned. I would not want a foldable to be any wider than that one. I'm not saying everyone would feel the same way I do, but I don't think most people are going to want a phone that wide. Just my two cents anyway. The mockup is based on the leaked dimensions and resolutions. It is correct, unless those leaks are significantly wrong. There’s also precedent for that kind of form factor with the Huawei Pura X.
