Apple never really did "innovation". What they do is look at what's already on the market and think, "How can we do this better." That was true with the iPhone. There were dozens of different mobile phone manufacturers on the market for decades. But Apple re-thought what a consumer would want in a mobile device. Same thing with the iPad. Same thing with VisionPro. Heck, it was the same with the first Macintosh.
The definition of ‘Innovation’ is the very thing you’ve described.
Time to have a MacRumors brainstorming session; to see all the innovations and new products that members envisage. After all, so many in here think they can do better etc, time for them to step up, instead of criticising.

I know a lot of people on the forum reactively hate people like me bringing up ‘mini’ when discussing iPhones but Apple could easily position this as a completely new class of device like the iPad was and call this device an iBook mini, with the suggestion that they would fill it out with other models like iBook and iBook Pro that are more iPad or Mac sized.

An equally unpopular opinion - but I still contend that a foldable MacBook (and this phone for that matter) would be primarily touch-enabled and could likely run iPadOS or a bespoke fork of it.

If the price stays around $2000, it would pretty much be a wash if you bought an iPhone PM and an iPad Mini with comparable specs.

iPhone 16 PM 256GB - $1199
+
iPad Mini, w/ Cellular & Wi-Fi, 256GB - $749 = $1,948

You have to remember since a foldable has Wi-Fi and Cellular when unfolded (in mini tablet mode), you have to use the Wi-Fi and Cellular iPad Mini to make it a fair comparison.
If your total is 1948 then it’s less than 2k and you can take an iPhone 16 Pro no need for Pro Max… You can take also iPad mini 128gb… then you save a lot !

It has occurred to me that never ever have I heard any iPhone user say, "Damn, I wish this thing had a folding screen!". Never. Ever. Fold me up, Scotty

Bruh you will upgrade the iPhone fold too so it’s still less expensive.
Both my cellular iPad and iPhonePro are 512GB which means both devices would cost me $2348 plus $720 for three years of the iPad data plan. Like the ProMax, the iPhonebook will start at 256GB so it would be $2200 for a 512GB iPhonebook as opposed to ~$3k for three years of separate devices. Even if you compare it against the iPhoneAir which is supposed to be 100 less than the Pro, separate devices are still a lot more expensive.

However, people browsing in landscape, or doing something in landscape with the keyboard visible sure would like a double height screen.

Maybe your iPad is 512gb but do you need another ipad 512gb? I just said that iPhone Pro + iPad mini will cost less than iPhone Fold and this looks like a better deal ! If you have 128gb on both then count it as 256gb on iPhone fold…

If you only have base devices, and your iPad is wifi-only, then separate devices are less expensive, but once you factor in upgrades and years of a cellular data plan for the iPad, separate devices are not less expensive.

Apple has to find more creative ways to get its customers to pay more for phones than they ever have before. So no matter what the gimmick is the goal is to raise the price people are willing to pay for their devices. Sometimes they can do this while supplying value. Sometimes its just a gimmick and something developers never really embrace so you have a real expensive bobble that had a good demo but in use its pretty useless.

Also, how in the world will MagSafe work with this thing? My 15 Pro spends a lot of the day on a MagSafe stand charger on my desk, and overnight on another one at home. If you can only put it on a stand like this while it's folded, that sort of ruins the point of it, totoo.
My Magsafe car mount has held my Fold 6 just fine folded or unfolded, wirelessly charges too. I have photos of it in an old MacRumors thread but too lazy to search for it at the moment.

Yawn. This is a 'do not buy' even at $200.00.
Is there really a demand for this 'thing' once the Fanbois have been sold their new iThing?
I've yet to see a Samsung foldable in the wild so my guess is not yet.
Then with the economy about to crash who exactly will have the money to spend on this?
Not me that's for sure.
I've seen lots of them in the wild, even at work. Maybe I go to different places than you though?

We were in Tangier, Morocco and a guy asks me to help take a photo of him with his phone. I said sure and he proceeds to hand me his Fold 3. It was totally unexpected. Of course he was just another fellow tourist but I thought it was cool to find another fellow Fold user at Cafe Baba (famously visited by members of the Rolling Stones from way back).

Yeah um forget about iPad cellular data… you can use your iPhone plan and mostly the iPhone fold is like a book so you can download books on your iPad mini or whatever you want… And use the phone for everything else like you would on a fold phone…

You're cheaping out on storage and relying on mobile hotspot to make your argument work. Do you also really carry around both your phone and iPad wherever you go? If so then you can't really just "hand the iPad to your kid" as you stated earlier unless your kid is also with you all the time. If your iPad needs to rely on your phone as a hotspot for prolonged use then you drain your phone battery faster and pretty soon the Internet access will die for both devices.

Be real. A foldable affords you the convenience of a phone and mini tablet in a compact form factor with full cellular access. A foldable can indeed be cheaper than two separate devices depending on storage and separate data plans. You can also get the new Fold7 with 512GB from Samsung or Amazon right now for $1600-1700 without any trade-ins.

Samsung are releasing their creaseless folding phone before Apple next year, the Galaxy Z Fold8.

Samsung are making the Apple fold display.

Imagine Apple releases the iPhone fold for 2399,- It is written that the 1st generation hinge system will have problems. Breaking, creaking and so on. Additionally it‘s AI capabilities will be inferior - still.

Another interesting point following Samsung is, that most of the time people are using those foldable devices in closed mode …

And here is what Apple can‘t achieve under the leadership of Cook

Now an iPhone Huawei Pura X form factor would be ace.

Or are Apple also working on a Flip design?

Personally don't see the point, it's iPad, or iPhone, a halfway house, seems like a compromise. Don't also get Apple's (assuming this rumour turns out to be fact) reasoning on this, as it adds to the inventory, and will cannibalise sales from their other 'device' categories.

You are not seeing things from the right perspective. While I could care less for a foldable phone, you need to realize that in order for the Vision Pro to be released.
A lot had to be done in advance under the surface; otherwise it would have been a paperweight:
• ARKit
• MLKit
• Extensive research to prevent people from getting dizzy, eye strained or vomiting after using the device, something that happens with the other devices that came out early without being a half-ass solution.
It’s easy to criticize Apple for being “late”. it’s that the others came early without being ready.
The AVP it’s a great tool with a huge future ahead. It’s not just a toy or a giant display for a computer.
I couldn’t care less about a foldable phone either. But I still wouldn’t put too many eggs in the AVP basket. It is niche, and has a looong way to go before it can even attempt to step out of the niche zone.
