Book style, bi-foldables are meant to be a mini tablet and phone in one device. They are not meant to replace a full size tablet. Only the tri-folds, which I am not interested in, are meant to replace the larger tablets.

The inner display of the Oppo Find N5 (which I currently own) is 8.12 inches.

The latest iPad mini (7th generation) has an 8.3-inch display.
Well iPad mini 7 + iPhone is less expensive haha… ok you have like similar 2-1 with the phone but come on I don’t think it’s worth the extra money… + 2 devices is cooler like you can give on at your kid while you are using you iPhone !!

If the price stays around $2000, it would pretty much be a wash if you bought an iPhone PM and an iPad Mini with comparable specs.

iPhone 16 PM 256GB - $1199
+
iPad Mini, w/ Cellular & Wi-Fi, 256GB - $749 = $1,948

You have to remember since a foldable has Wi-Fi and Cellular when unfolded (in mini tablet mode), you have to use the Wi-Fi and Cellular iPad Mini to make it a fair comparison.

Ok...as of right now i might skip my usual upgrade trade in (for the 16 pro max to the 17 pro max) and just hold off until next year to get the fold.

I dont see beyond a better camera and processor what the 17 pro max offers then what i currently have. However, if i can get a foldable iphone that doubles as both an iphone and a pro ipad mini...2000 is a fair price for that!

My plan right now is start saving for it in the spring of next year and by the fall have more then enough saved up for it. But with my luck the phone will be delayed a year to cash in on the 20th anniversary of the iphone!

Both my cellular iPad and phone are 512GB which means both devices would cost me $2348 plus $720 for three years of the iPad data plan. The iPhonebook will probably start at 256GB, although one could hope they will give it 512GB to help justify its high price, so I would still be spending $200 to upgrade it to 512GB.

So the iPhonebook would save me around a grand over three years compared to separate devices.

Understood. If the form factor rings true for the Apple Fold, it is going to turn a lot of people off being that wide. There's no way that could fit comfortably in regular sized jeans/shorts/pants pockets. It would be nearly two inches wider than the original Pixel Fold, which I owned.
The outer screen is 7.7% wider than the Pro Max screen (3.09” vs. 2.87”), or 16.8% wider than the original Pixel Fold screen (2.65”). But I would also expect the bezels to be a bit thinner than on the Pixel Fold. The Apple Fold is pretty wide for a phone, yes, but that extra quarter inch compared to the Pro Max probably won’t be a dealbreaker for many people, given that it’s also shorter than a mini. It’s still smaller than most wallets.

Honestly….. Apple just needs to come out the foldable docked Apple In One.
It’s a Phone, iPad, Mac in one….

Folded it’s a phone..
Unfolded it’s an iPad..
Docked it’s a Mac…
Would have to be priced higher than the Vision Pro. ;)

The only people that want a foldable iPhone seems to be the Macrumors hosts.

The latest Samsung Fold is incredibly thin and has a better hinge than previous versions. Still has a crease though.

Other than that, I can’t see buying 1st Gen hardware on this one, especially since it’ll be expensive as hell to try and claw back some of the ridiculous design & engineering costs.

If you laid the iPhone Mini 13 in that photo on top of the Apple Fold next to it, it looks like the Apple Fold would be almost twice as wide as the Mini 13 (2.53"). The numbers aren't making sense to me I guess. With the iPhone Mini 13 being 2.53" wide and the original Pixel Fold being 3.1" wide (not 2.65") and 5.5" tall, the original Pixel Fold is a half an inch wider than the iPhone Mini 13, which is shown in your photos. The original Pixel Fold is even slightly wider than the iPhone 16 PM (3.06"). To me, I don't see how that mockup of the Apple Fold can be any less than 3.5-3.75" wide. That is insane for a phone, be it a foldable or not. But, maybe my eyes are deceiving me here! The original Microsoft Surface Duo was 3.67" wide and that device flopped hard. It was running a different OS of course, but I remember a lot of people complaining about how wide it was.

Another iPhone to only see one app at a time a foldable would be pointless without real functionality

That’s absolutely not the case. Look at the pictures in the thread I linked. Here is the mini, the (old 6.7”) Pro Max, and the Fold on top of each other:

The Fold screen is only around 35% wider than the mini screen.

The numbers I cited were for the screen alone, without bezels, since for the Apple Fold we only have accurate numbers for the screen. The Pixel Fold screen is 2.65” wide. As I said, I would assume that the bezels on the Apple Fold will be thinner than those on the Pixel Fold, because the latter were really wide.

The iPhone 13 mini was 5.4 inches and the iPad mini 7 is 7.7 inches, so this is just 0.1inches bigger in both form factors(5.5 and 7.8 inch).

The small number of people who loved the mini will likely be super interested... I am.
I'm one of those people, but I can't justify spending nearly $2000 on a phone.

It’s funny, I only did the CAD image and renders because I wanted to know for my own self interest if the fold could replace my mini, but I’m delighted it can be used to enlighten other users (seemingly one-by-one!)

I appreciate you’re linking to my thread though, glad it helps!

What doesn’t help is MacRumours not doing their own renders for new articles to match the current rumours. I mean they have the staff and the capability. The article image they keep using just confuses people because it’s formatted to look like a Samsung fold.

I saw they used a new image for the YouTube Thumbnail so maybe we’ll get some new renders soon.

Jobs famously stated, “People don’t know what they want until you show it to them.”

AVP, and now this…Tim Cook’s legacy.

Hopefully this soon-to-be failure will be the final straw for Cook and usher him into retirement.

Apple doesn’t do innovation any more. I can accept that the window for innovation in consumer devices may be mostly closed, but AVP and foldable phones are the antithesis of the spirit of Apple and reek of desperation.

AVP is an everyday productivity tool for me. It has changed my work process for the better. AVP is absolutely the spirit of the Apple Macintosh -- innovation with available technology at a price point affordable by those who value quality over price. Your mileage has varied.

“An iPod, a phone, an internet communicator - are you getting it?”

It would be WILD if this thing could work with an external monitor as an extended desktop.

Yes, thank you for the renders, otherwise I would only be posting Display Wars graphics. ;)

I just listened to the latest MacRumors show, and they (well, Dan) were confused about how the Fold could possibly work with such a “tiny” 5.5” outer display. Tech reporters at least should understand aspect ratios vs. diagonals.

I'm actually surprised Apple is starting it's foldables with a Fold version instead of a Flip. Anyone that's had a Samsung Flip or Motorola Razr flip, knows a Flip would fit Apple's brand better over a Fold.

I am excited for Apple's Fold though, but I highly doubt I will get the first Gen, unless it's designed (hardware & software) that good.

Word to the wise:

Unless you are the type who upgrades every year, you should consider getting the extended warranty when buying any first gen product.
