Apple's doing GREAT in my opinion. First and foremost they're a business and need to make a profit, they're doing an excellent job of that, even in questionable economies...

Next, they make a quality product, MacBook/MacBook Pro whichever, I realize it's hurts the tiny percentage in specialty markets who like/need matte screens, express slots etc etc and that's unfortunate... these can still be had as options, only in the 17" I realize. But, if you're running a business you're going to cater to the demands of the majority of your customer base.

Hat's off to Apple for doing that ... I mean, more people are able to buy MacBooks now than ever before because the prices are much lower, they have an affordable entry level price .... GREAT, Professionals can order the higher spec's they desire, both markets are served.

To insinuate that Apple should be a company with bloated prices so only a few people can tout the brand is a little too capitalistic for my liking ....

Finally, their Customer Service to both the Consumer and Business Market, second to none!

Keep doing what you're doing Apple, that's all I can say.

Well said and I am fully agree. Often I have the feeling people wine about things they don't even really need. And no matter what Apple does, there will be always someone who wines.

Apple did great with the Glass panel designs. They did great with the SD slot, they did great with lower the prices and brand the 13" MBP. They are not stupid and do marketing research and I believe they know what they are doing ;)

The OP really needs to get a life if the name and price of a computer gets to him so much. Who cares what the computer is called or what it is priced at. In many ways the MacBook was more like a MBP, so they added some extra stuff and made it part of the pro lineup. As for the SD card slot... that will get far more usage so it's an intelligent business decision from Apple.

The only actual pro machine from Apple is a Mac Pro w/ dual ACDs. Who the heck uses a laptop for pro work!

In a way the OP has a point. There probably is no need for the 'Pro' name any more.

Apple should just call the whole range Macbook's.

Before anyone starts to flame, I see this as a good thing! Bringing better machines to people for less money is a great move by Apple.

I remember paying $25,000HKD for a PB(Ti) back in 2001 - it's replacement, a 2.2MBP cost just $15,0000HKD in 2008. That's almost half the price!

Sure the current MBP could be better (smaller screen bezel, matte option, express card etc) but its still a helluva good laptop for the money. I say well done Apple.

ok everyone relax. I don't think it's the elitism that's the problem.

The problem is the the macbook has been rebranded as a 13" mbp and people are buying into it.

I wasn't around the time of the 12" powerbook but did it have a discrete gpu? For me that's the only major thing..a discrete gpu that separates consumer from pro IMHO.

No, The end result of someone's' work separate a pro from a consumer. Not the tool ;) A real pro can make the best creation with any tool. A consumer (non Pro) can't make a decent creation with the best computer in the world ;)

I think the OP is worried that a lot more people will be getting a Mac for the wrong reasons. To me though there is no right or wrong reason. Macs are trying to get people to switch over. I can honestly say that I'm glad I switched over, but not to be following the trend which seems to be happening where I am located (Vancouver, BC, Canada).

I'm going back to school in October 2009. I wanted to familiarize myself with all the Mac settings and so far i think the MBP has done a masterful job with this. Imagine I spent a close to $2500 on a system when I couldn't even fully utilize all the functionality of a computer such as that? Especially with someone being new in the Mac world, Apple got this one right and commend them and their efforts.

Yep it did.

On another note:

The OP has a point even though his particular view screams elitist, he's concerned more about perceived status at least thats how he's coming across. The 'real' MBP line has been dead since the Early 08 models tbh.

First they took away DVI for miniDP without including any adapters, FW400 the more popular port (also no adapter) and the matte screen option (just to make the laptop look like an iPhone) in one fell swoop. Next was expresscard, which is a more versatile slot and finally they seal the battery in.

All these would've been fine for the 13" model but that doesn't mean they needed to castrate the 15" the way they did

Ultimately they (Apple) are going for the wider audience which wouldn't care about these and why not its a corporate company that wants to make money and this is the way to go about it

Its basically now MacBook Prosumer if that...unless you get the 17 incher

The Computer For The Rest of Us...

Perhaps useful to remember is that Apple as a company originally set out to make computing affordable and easy to understand. Building computers 'for the rest of us'.

They didn't want to compromise on quality and user experience, but they also wanted to make it reasonably affordable.

Meanwhile for years PCs might have beaten them on affordability, but their overall experience is not as good.
By now users are fed up with wasting time on systems that won't ever work well. And as long as Apple's premium is reasonable, they do have a chance still at fulfilling their original goal.

And I think that's where Apple is still heading.
Pro users were important for a while to return them to profitability, but they traditionally have never been Apple's target customers.

As much as I'd love to see a high-end Apple notebook, I think it is not 'typically Apple'.
So I'm not holding my breath.
And the OP will probably end up disappointed too.

the 17 inch has antiglare and express slot !!!!!!!! Not sure about the e-SATA.

What is Pro about the MBP anymore? There is no matte screen option. The screen bezel is huge. No ExpressCard slot. The classic keyboard had better tactile feedback. The 13" and base 15" can't run CUDA. An SD card slot is for consumers with P&S cameras. No built-in eSATA. The video adapters and remote are not included (a matter of convenience, even if it means a higher price).

And so the Macbook Pro brand has been tarnished. It is no longer a special badge worn only by the few - it has lost its essence.

Since you obvious do a lot of editting do you think a MBP, 3.06 GHz, 8 GB memory, 500 (7200 rpm) HDD (maybe SSD is better??) can handle AVC-I-100 using FCS (actually it is transcoded to prores in FC) in multiple timelines without chocking???? What about rendering speed? Some people say you really need a MP octa core for this job ?

Obviously you have made your case that, like many posters here, you have your eyes closed, fingers in ears singing LALALALA whenever anyone has anything negative to say about Apple's products.

Pro's want multiple FW800 for input/output while editing. Pros want to use dedicated Express cards for software that requires it and have the choice to swap out devices rather than have 10 things dangling by USB outside of the machine and Pros USE THE EXTRA POWER OF DEDICATED CHIPS that you see as unnecessary.

Just because YOU never utilized those things you think no one does so everyone is an idiot who thinks otherwise. I'm glad there are watered-down products that you are happy with but now a chunk of their user base was left out to pasture yet again. THAT is what this thread is about.

the 17 inch has only one FW 800 port !!!!!

Exactly. Why not just divide the line up?

1. 13in / integrated gfx / 2GB / SD - $1199
2. 13in / dedicated / 4GB / SD - $1499
3. 15in / integrated gfx / 4GB / SD - $1699
4. 15in / Dedicated / 4GB / EX slot - $1999
5. 17in / Dedicatd /4GB / 2x FW / EX slot -$2599

OP... Your an rotten 

The Apple brand has been subjected to Globalization...

Back in the olden days, Apple products were more exclusive as fewer people used them however that isn't good for business as Apple discovered in the 1990's when the company almost completely disappeared altogether!! Thankfully good ole MicroSoft came to help them out!

I think, if your not happy with the MacBookPro, get a Sony or some other brand and build yourself an Hackintosh!! Sure, Steve will hate you for it.. but it might actually teach Apple a little about what Prosumers want.
