My hackintosh has been running 24/7 with almost no problems for months now. I built it in a G3 PowerMac case. Check out the thread in my sig to see the build process. It is frikin awesome lol

That is a neat setup. I have two G3 Blue & White Mac towers, but they both work so well, I would hate to kill them.

Cave, has your Hackintosh experience been as good as your Mini or close?

It is far superior. I went from a geekbench score of around 1700 to 6100. It's a lot quieter than my Mini/MiniStack II combo, that's for sure. And Aperture flies through raw images - it's almost like watching a movie when you scroll through images. My only wishes are (1) fw was more reliable, (2) updating the OS would be easier, and (3) I had done it sooner. :)

What led you to choose the mobo that you did?

From insanelymac forums it seems to be the most compatible board, particularly when matched with an Intel SSE3/4 Core 2 and Nvidia 8xxx series.

help PLEASEE

Your hard drive is probably formatted as NTSF. You cannot load Apple software on that format.

best advice... check @ wiki.osx86project.org and choose a mobo that best supports the functionally for your needs.

I used an x38 board.... Kind of pricey but I did not have to patch anything.

The site is now working.

fyi, the 10.5.4 update works via apples software update on my hackintosh. no issues at all

very cool indeed

I enjoy my hackintosh, it's been quite good to me for a few months now. I ditched a nasty glossy-screened 20" iMac for it. It's really fast. Almost everything works perfectly.

The only problem that I haven't been able to resolve is that my card readers (one built into my Dell 2407wfp monitor and one built into my Epson printer) don't work. If my machine recognizes the SD card at all, the USB Mass Storage process hangs. Usually it just doesn't see the card. As it is, I have to plug my Nikon D40 DSLR in directly in order to read the images from the card. No problems there at all. Do I just need to buy a standalone card reader? Does anyone have a hackintosh and a card reader that works well?

I thought I would never buy Mac Pro but I did about 3 months ago and Im so glad I did. This is by far the best computer I have ever owned and I couldn't be happier.

So guys, what do you use your Hackintoshes for? :D

Mine is my main machine at home, complemented by a MacBook Pro. I have 24" and 20" monitors hooked up to it and do lots of web design and graphics work. I got rid of my glossy iMac because the screens in those things are horrible.

My hackintosh also has four hard drives in it totaling 2.4 TB. One is my system and personal drive, two are for media, and one is for backup of critical items.

Building the hackintosh allowed me to get larger, high quality screens for graphics work than I could with the iMac, as well as add more hard drives (which enabled me to permanently shut down a Linux server which previously held them -- saves power). It also gave me more headroom for RAM -- I've got 4GB now and I think I'll bump it to 8GB soon.

Any advantages of 10.5.4 over 10.5.2? I've heard a lot of complaints about 10.5.3 (and not just from hackintosh users).

my geekbench score jumped by about 200 pts to now around 6500ish

in my case i had to reset the bios for not ahci when i did the 10.5.3 upgrade. didnt the first time and well had to reinstall the whole thing which sucked

to get the ahci, i just reinstalled the kexts then reset bios for ahci and works great

i would reccomend upgrading if you can imo

i got everything at newegg.
i got my info at insanelymac dot com

mobo = gigabyte p35 D3SL =$80
processor = core 2 quad 2.4GHz (oc'ed at 3.6GHz) = $279
ram = 4-4-4-12 ddr800 (runs fine at 1000MHz) = $142
hd = WD Raptor 10000 rpm system drive = $89
processor fan = freezerpro7 = $11
firewire card = $14
geforce 7300 turbo graphic card = $89

os10.5 = $129

satisfaction = priceless
i enjoy this computer more than any of the numerous real macs i have owned.

one of the most reliable macs i have owned, it just works and its stinking fast. infact its faster than apples quads.
Dude I am sick of hearing about this crap. The "hackintosh" is exactly what it sounds like, a shoddy hack that has a better chance of NOT working on your particular hardware setup than working. Oh, and if it doesn't work, be prepared to be an outrageous mega geek to "insert code" to make things work. Shoddy, shoddy hackers. If they were actually GOOD at what they were doing, it would just work, oh like an Apple computer does. And as far as Psystar...they are NOT making hackintosh computers!! They know exactly what hardware they are working with, thats why they can get it to work! Sound familiar? APPLE DOES THE SAME THING.

mine works fine and was relatively easy to do

i suggest you research it than make "shoddy" remarks on a topic you have likely no experience in

If you spend about an hour doing research on compatible parts and procedures, anyone can do it. It is not that hard and I saved about $2000. It is faster and more reliable than my MBP in fact.

Boy, you sure have your panties in a tight-wad over this. :rolleyes:

The "hackintosh" is exactly what it sounds like, a shoddy hack that has a better chance of NOT working on your particular hardware setup than working.

The reality is that mine works much better than any of my other Macs (and I've owned 7 or 8).

Shoddy, shoddy hackers. If they were actually GOOD at what they were doing, it would just work, oh like an Apple computer does.

Really? I sure wish I could get AEBS disk sharing to work properly. Do you think you could get to work on that? And how about Quicktime and AC-3 passthrough - can you fix those problems as well? And while we're on QT, can you do something about its poor decoding of high-bitrate video? It's really sad that X Box Media Player is the best video software for the Mac.

You're an ignoramus. I installed Leopard with 1 disc, then ran two additional installers for drivers (sound, etc), and everything works. The hackers are very good, and have managed to put together very user-friendly packages to handle all this. You haven't had to fiddle with code for these things for a long time. Take your hate somewhere else.

I haven't read through this thread, so I don't know if it's already been covered, but if you want OS updates to work without waiting for hacked versions, install the Vanilla Kernel.

EDIT: don't follow this advice. See below
