Building and tinkering is so cool, I used to really be into that. But nowadays I think I would just buy a Psystar Open Pro and be done with it.

They look like pretty crappy builds to me. I would definitely build my own hackintosh again, use better parts, and spend less money than the Psystar machines.

Yeah, the 399 version looks really lame but the Pro doesn't look as bad. It's no Apple beauty but it's bearable.

No, I'm using a ZALMAN CNPS9700 cpu cooler (copper heat sink fan with blower). Did not do prime95 - that's not Mac is it? I just run Handbrake, which uses all four cores and is the most I'll ever push it (I think).

Handbrake is probably one of the best tests anyways.
Handbrake fast = :D

I have run two instances of Handbrake simultaneously (just make a copy of the application and call it something else like "Handbrake 2"). My quad core hackintosh handles both encodes very well and all 4 processors are 90+% used. This is a really good stress test.

Hi, i really need some help installing leopard onto my windows based laptop, its a vostro 1400.

basically i have the iatkos 2.0i dvd and try to install using it, but it loads the dvd, and where the language box appears i click the next button, it ehn says something about preparing install, then the computer just switches off, anyone has the same problem??
You might try the 10.5.2 Kalyway DVD installation. Let us know what happens.

prime 95 is windows if you have that installed as well. what it does is max out each core and will report if an error is made if overclocked too high

they reccomend running for 24 hrs and if no errors then its a stable overclock

So, you guys that have Hackintoshes, are you the same people that want Apple to release a upgradeable mid-range Mac tower? ;)
Yes of course, but it has to be affordable. I might note one item here... that I use an MSI 8800GT 512MB OC PCIe 2.0 video card in my system that I purchased new for $150US. Apple charges $280 for a plain 8800GT. This is not fair (my opinion only, but they are greedy).

Also as you had asked earlier... My box is mainly used for design work. I built my system after many years of using Apple so I chose parts that I knew were more compatible with Leo & my needs / expectations.

Although a Hackintosh can be built on the cheap and have great performance, researching online for updating the OS and patching can be very time consuming. Everyone has different hardware and files to deal with that their is NO one common updater and instruction... unless your installing a fresh full OS. And no you can not use Software Update for most major OS updates. I say most because the recent update from 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 dose work via SU. This could all change in the future but for now if you don't have the time don't bother.

For me, I can honestly say it's been a great project and I really enjoy building & using my machine... it's fast, quiet and dose what I need for now.

Interesting 10.5.4 update story

I turned on my computer and software update ran.

I opted to install the 10.5.4 update. Everything went flawlessly. I restarted and my computer works as before.

The interesting part is I did this with my Hackintosh.

Is Apple getting soft on "Open" computers or do they just not care?

Just an interesting development.

Disclaimer: I purchased a legit license for this computer and support Apple in many ways; the hackintosh was meant to be an experiment.

NVidia GPU overheating prob

So now, what to do about building a Hackintosh?
What GPU board is compatible?
I wonder if NVidia Corp will come clean and announce which of their boards are problematic.
I have one of their 8400 GPU boards.

wow, you got really lucky

btw, your still violating the EULA... apple
"You agree not to install, use or run the ple Software on any non Apple Labled Computer..."

but anyways, congrats
i made a hackintosh too but it always crashed on me so i gave up on it

Who cares what if he's breaking the EULA or not? It's neat that it worked. We have a MacBook and an iMac but I still tried installing Leopard on one of our Dell laptops. It's fun just to see if I can do it. I couldn't. It does seem odd that it didn't break your computer though.

This type of attitude is gonna force Apple in the future to require activation.
