If what i learned some time ago is still true then...

You can not use a retail DVD for installs and have to rely on hacked install CD's
Can not use a "vanilla" kernel, and have to wait for a new custom kernel or hacked security upgrade (or edit the install script yourself) everytime you want to upgrade.

As i like to keep my system up to date it is easier (and more secure) for me to go with hardware that matches Apple's offerings to a certain degree. That is why i say - If you want a Hackintosh go Intel.

Yea thats true, but with software like AMD Software Update you can install everything without much trouble.

They are making great progress with amd cpus, but its worth the extra 10% cost to go intel. Its still alot cheaper than buying a mac.

I installed osx86 when they had the tiger install disc at the time.

It was a lot of fun getting that working. When it was all said and done I had a relatively functional Tiger installation.

The only thing I remember not working correctly was the USB ports. I had to run everything to an external powered hub which wasn't much of a problem anyway since I only had 4 working USB ports anyway.

I was offered a Hackintosh with the following specs for $1000 shipped, do you guys think thats a good price?

EFI-X Module installed on one of the USB headers - upgraded to latest 3.6.9 version
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 3.0GHz Quad Core 1333 FSB 45nm Yorkfield processor
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R socket 775 mainboard
Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer CPU heatsink w/ 120mm fan
Antec 300 Black Chassis
Antec True Power Trio 550w power supply
8GB DDR-2 800MHz (4 x 2GB) - Corsair I think, but need to confirm what I put in there
Seagate 1.5TB SATA hard drive
EVGA Nvidia 8800 GTS 320MB PCI-Express x16 graphics card
LG 22x SATA DVD burner
PCI slot fan speed controller installed for CPU fan

Thanks for your help!

Someone offered that to you, prebuilt? That's not a shabby deal

Yeah prebuilt, geekbench is 6343 on 32-bit, which I thought was impressive.

The parts alone on that would set you back 800+ (if my quick math skills aren't failing me), so I'd say it's a decent deal, especially if you don't have to mess with the install (which is part of the fun :))

Yes, he said it was 1800 total for parts, so it's about 40% off.

Hell of a deal and I have that motherboard it works great with OS X.

what type of ram do you use? it says it can take ddr2 1200, but there aren't that many of those chips. It comes with 8gbs of ddr2 800, how much of a difference would that make?

Maybe a few percent faster if your lucky you really only need the higher spec ram if your overclocking and you think your going to be able too get the FSB past 400mhz. My machine has the same 8gb idea in it and with my overclock (Q6600@3.15ghz) I run them at DDR700 (FSB=350mhz) so the ram runs at 1:1 to the FSB, I don't really notice any difference between it and an 8x394 for the same approximate speed.

Well, after the idea of building an hackintosh,I decided don't doing it,sell the system and save for a powerbook g4 12',an "upgrade" of my ibook..
So I decided to try it in my main laptop :D
HP Dv9575ep
Distro: Leo4All 10,5,6
Hardware:
Processor: Intel T7300 2,0GHz 4mb cache (enabled speedstepping "driver")
Mainboard chipset: Intel 965 ICH8 (ICH driver + apple AHCI)
Graphics Card:8600M GS (bios overclocked) (nvdarwin 256mb)
Sound: Realtek ALC268 (NewALC268 driver)
Screen: 17' 1440x900 (working out of the box)
Lan: Realtek 8111 (driver)
Wifi:Intel 3945ABG (doesn't work) but my SMC Usb ZD1211 thingy worked with the drivers for this chipset on leo's dvd..
HDD:2x160Gb Sata 2 - working out of the box, with ntfs support to read my partitions
I am very satisfied with it..but if I could afford a macbook pro I def won't build an hackintosh instead..

^^
Theres a driver for your wifi chipset out there. Idk if it works because i cant test it myself, but it looks legit.
The driver can be found on this page:
http://code.google.com/p/iwidarwin/
Make sure you grab the "3945a/b/g" driver and not the other ones.

Install instructions here:
http://code.google.com/p/iwidarwin/wiki/Installation

Let me know if it works for ya!

I already tried it,it comes with the leo cd..I doesn't work..if you search on insanelymac you will see that drivers for intel cards are almost down..

can anyone give an updated list of recommended parts to build a Hackintosh? i looked everywhere, and everything was pretty much outdated, and i'm looking into building one...

You can't call it a mac. It just runs OS X against the EULA. Why would you post that here? Are you looking to get flamed?

Not quite sure about that. Take contracts in law school and get used to the strange and specific (and totally unclear) language of jurisprudence. Many EULA cases, if they make it to court, lose. If they win, they are almost universally reversed and remanded in a court of appeals. Even Dell, with all their money and power, cannot seem to make things go their way.

Anyway, if interested, I can PM you with interesting judicial decisions and dissents on the topic. Fun reading for people interesting in both high tech and law. :)

Did you try the OSx86 wiki at insanelymac?
The wiki is never updated and only has a few pieces of hardware.
Search with google like this:
<name of hardware> site:insanelymac.com
Look for a mobo with the P35 chipset, Bob. They seem to always work 100%. Stick with ASUS or Gigabyte. All ram works, all hdd's work. Video cards can ge a bit wonky, but if you search the model the way i said up there ^^ you can see if there are drivers. Afaik, all of the nvidia 9xxx series works, and some of the 2xx work too, but i dont know how well.

Do tell!

EDIT: When I was downstairs eating breakfast, I left the Hac on. I came back and it seemed to be off. WTF?
It probably tried to go to "energy saving mode" and did a shutdown instead.
Maybe try to change powersavings settings from S1 to S3 or vice versa, if that does not help make a backup of your install. Then install OpenHaltRestart.kext from Psystar.

By the way i have to start my Hack with the power button to wake it from sleep/hibernation. So did you check if it was off or only hibernating?

what do you mean by "mobo with P35 chipset"? and i'm assuming for a motherboard you mean ASUS/Gigabyte, does it come with a processor on it?. and will this graphics card work? i'm done questioning:D

EDIT: i think mobo means motherboard...but i still don't get the P35 chipset part.
