I'd expect any OS to out perform XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

I've been trying out the Windows 7 public beta on a few machines for the past couple months and performance is better than Vista and comparable, if not better than OS X on the same machine. I actually find myself prefering it for basic functions over various Linux desktops.

7622 for me on my 3.6GHz Q6600 with DDR3 memory.

5952 on mine @3.15ghz with EyeTV recording a show, VirtualBox running XP with uTorrent doing a 100k both ways up/down and another at least half dozen programs open while testing.

How are you cooling that Q6600? Before I started using the 64-bit version of Handbrake, it would overheat my Q6600 at 3.2 gHz.

I use an Ultra 120 Extreme with a 120mm Scythe fan on it with four other 120mm in a Cooler Master Stacker case under full load 100% all cores it has never seen 60C on any of them. I have used Handbrake to encode too x264 on it usually in the low to mid 50C doing that its never overheated, but then again it does all this at its rated default VID of 1.2125v so not a lot of voltage put to the chip even under full load.

New HTPC build: 9300 chipset

Got a new build. This replaces my Mac Mini home theater. It is ugly and big compared to the Mini, but can multitask Blu-ray playback, EyeTV recording and exporting and streaming to the Apple TV concurrently. Here're the specs:

  • 2.33 gHz Core 2 Quad cpu with stock fan (Q8200)
  • 4 gb RAM
  • Asus P5N7A-VM 9300 gpu board with shared 256 mb vRAM
  • Gigabit ethernet
  • 5 SATA ports
  • 1 eSATA port
  • 10 USB2 ports (all work; 4 on the front, 6 on the rear)
  • DVI/VGA/HDMI (probably nonfunctional)/DisplayPort
  • Optical audio port (and legacy analog miniplug ports on the back and front)
  • 750 gb boot drive (with some media, principally for my Eye TV Hybrid and iTunes)
  • 1.5 tb media drive

I used the Universal Installer/Chameleon to build it from a retail 10.5.6 Installer DVD that I bought last week, then added a couple of audio kexts and it's running great. The fans run all the time, but are not noticeable when pumping through that Dolby Digital or DTS goodness. ;)

Might want to mess around in the BIOS or else get a 5.25" fan controller.

Hey guys,

Since you guys are obviously the geniuses who will have the answers to my noob question, I thought I'd ask! :D

I'm thinking about picking up a Acer Aspire One this weekend, it should fit my basic needs quite well, although the prospect of running OS X is attracting me even more.

Can someone point me in the direction of the best and easiest way to install OS X on the Aspire One? What would I need, what would and wouldn't work?

Thanks :D

ok everybody i need some help!!!

im getting fed up with the temperatures i am seeing on my hack..

its a E4500 2.4GHz OC'd to 3GHz on stock air cooling.

idles at 43°C (yes 43°C). under pressure it will easily hit 60°C. the main reason for this is that its enclosed in a 5 year old case, then shoved under my desk with about 1cm gap each side of it..

i have been thinking about upgrading to a E8500 (ish) for $255, i just saw that i can upgrade to a Q8200 (2.33ghz) for $255.

for the video editing that i have been doing the E4500 is nowhere near what i need.

anyways, im probably going to upgrade to the Q8200 in a few months, what are some good 3rd party coolers that i can put onto the CPU if i want to take it up near the 4GHz option or will i need water cooling for that (how much is water cooling btw?). also going to upgrade to 4GB or Geil RAM (im on a tight budget).

fankyou :)

I've always told by other tech installers (cable tv-wise) to keep @ least 2 finger gap (index/middle finger) on most sides of electronic devices, if there in enclosed area....

Watercooling rough starts $110 (US) and up... Water-cooling for Computer Use

*duh* google! should of thought of that, thankyou.

i guess i should pull my computer out of its hiding hole..it stillneeds an upgrade though - badly

have a look at the heat sink coolers on Newegg. i like the Zalman 9700 as it has good reviews, is quiet and made completely out of copper which has a high thermal conducitivity. its pretty big though so measure out your case. then theres also the 'tower' heatsinks like the Xigmatek and Scythes which are massive and a bit to hardcore for me which can be run with (OC) out without (stock) a fan.

then choose a decent sized (prob. mid) well priced case to house your beast. i like the Antec Solo becuase its reviewed as quiet (espec with the HDD suspenders) and has good airflow. it also looks pretty good to me, almost Mac-like with the aluminium finish.

also other components might be making your computer hot like the PSU or graphics card how are their temps? investing in a good quality, quiet, cool PSU (instead of just high wattage) is always good. the Seasonic M12II's is a good example. i was set on getting a Corsair 520HX but found out that its pretty much just a rebranding of the M12II which is cheaper .

hhhmm GPU temperatures are around 50-60°C under windows, i cannot read them on OSX. PSU i cannot read from anywhere. might have to stick with a smaller cooling fan because the case isnt overly big! i will eventually upgrade the whole computer and start again - will be a few years but.. dont have enough monies!! haha

Is there a particular reason you're going with the Q8200 and not the Q6600? I think it's a better processor and has a very good history of overclocking success.

basically because i cant find it in any stores that are near to me.. its also another $60. being a poor uni student i just cant justify it. what do you reckon would be better??

a new case and decent heat sink will bring down the temps of your CPU and maybe everything else a little becuase of more airflow.

http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/429625-recomendations-oc-q8200.html seems to suggest getting the Q6600 as Cave Man suggests as its just a better performer at higher overclocks. but if youre just OC a little to say 2.8 then it should be OK. a good OC'd Core 2 Duo like the E7400 might be best if you dont need the extra cores. youve got the Q8200 Cave Man couldnt be too bad could it being a 45nm Yorkfield?

Just to chime in, I hope to be part of this hackintosh community very soon! i've got my dell mini 9, now I just need to find a place to buy an affordable version of OSX! After I find that, I'll finally have a little apple netbook to travel with. sweet!

great link! so reading through that thread apparently the Q8200 sucks bceause of the 7x multiplyer limit. looks like i might have to go with the Q6600 if i can find it somewhere near.

ive got a bit of a dilemma now with cases for my Hac. im now looking at the Antec Three Hundred over the Antec Solo as it looks really sweet like a Black Mac Pro with the perforations but it has a few cons.

Antec Solo

- looks good with silver front will match my Apple gear
- case designed to minimise noise with dual layer panels and HDD suspension (or grommets if you dont use this)
- good looking front I/O with Firewire
- doesnt look as 'pimp' as the 300
- 120mm fan and only two 92mm fans for HDDs (good enough for me)

Antec Three Hundred

- good looking, black Mac Pro like
- PSU down the bottom away from CPU and gives stability
- does not have HDD suspenders or even grommets to dampen HDD vibrations.
- front I/O looks dated and doesnt have Firewire
- need adapater for front 3.5" bay (minor, need for card reader)
- 120mm fan, huge 200mm fan on top and two 120mm HDD fans (may be too loud for me)

these are all pros and cons suited for my use of course! what would you guys choose out of these two cases for a Hac?

I have the Antec 300 and really like it. I wanted to go for 'very plain' and I think this case provided just that. I will say the HDD's can be noisy and cable management is lacking. Other than that it's great.

whats the noise like with the fans on low/medium/high and the metal-on-metal HDD mounts?

im looking for a pretty quiet build like Macs usually are but dont want to skimp on the features. thats why im thinking the 300 is better.

rich: personally i think they are both fugly!! but for usability sake i would say the antec 300.. seems a better option for expandability etc..

:p

same for me im not looking for a flashy LED case with a side window. minimal with good design like Mac cases. i reckon these are the best designed most 'Mac-like' cases out there.

have a look at them in real pics they look pretty good to me :).
