The question is does Microsoft care about the rest of the world?

Of course they care, it's money... EU is not some backwater hole they don't care about doing business in. They still sold a lot of consoles in EU, it was probably their second biggest region. They need to stay strong in EU and this stumble (along with the rest of their snafus with the Xbone) does not help.

For whatever reason it has always felt to be the USA console and that is part of its appeal for some ...

I have never heard someone say they bought a XBOX because it's "America's console" or anything else along those lines...

Let me guess, you're in the US?
Consoles sell more outside the US than inside, it's just that the US is a large single market. MS cannot afford to simply give up on entire territories - its arrogance backfired in Japan for the 360, and today delivered a kick to the large European market. Whilst a "homegrown" console may have appeal for a few Americans, the rest of the world simply wants to be treated fairly - namely with synchronised launches. The fact that MS is now seemingly referring to Japan as a tier 3 country is downright wrong.

To me, this smacks of MS running in to yield issues with the ESRAM, crippling supply. The knee-jerk reaction is to then cut supply to large swathes of Europe, rather than harm US sales numbers, leading to the obvious allegations of favouritism which can only play to Sony and Nintendo's advantage.

i LOLed at the "localization issues" excuse: yeah like the that doesn't feel like being smacked in the face for the swiss ....

last time i checked microsoft still plans launching in germany, italy and france ... you know the home countries of the 3 languages spoken in switzerland

and most of those european countries left out didn't get localized dashboards until patches years after launch with the 360 and now that isn't possible anymore? who is going to believe that ... does microsoft think it's customers are stupid ?

.. but i suspect behind the scenes microsoft is _really_ having those rumoured serious yield issues

I am from the USA - I'm not one of those Americans that like what MSoft is doing and haven't owned any XBoxes - a Nintendo guy myself whose owned a PS2 in the past.

^ they should have allowed people to choose any digital game or simply bundled a €50 digital download token. I can't think of a game with lesser attraction to me than FIFA 14 to get me to purchase a Xbox one at launch.

This...

As it's always been that when a game is "packed-in" - people think they're really paying for it and may be paying for something that don't want...

Download credit would be better in today's gaming.

I'm not a soccer fan so I agree out of personal taste. But free is free and someone who was gonna buy FIFA anyway might care.

I think Sony could easily one-up MS by offering a download credit for your choice of game. But right now they don't offer anything so there's really nothing negative about getting a free game that wasn't included in the pre-order SKU.

True, for a next-gen popular console, anything extra above the basic console is welcomed.

For me it was Sears "Target Fun"... :)

i received a 49 euro credit if i add the full driveclub disc to my ps4 preorder before 30. of september

i'm still holding out a little since i'm not sure if i get the game but that's pretty close to a free game

While I'd love a free download credit with my preorder, i think the whole "free game bundle" have sailed.

With that said, Sony also announced over a million pre-orders, pretty nice start to this generation.

I think if you like racing it'd be worth it. Otherwise you'd have to IAP the whole game piecemeal. Personally I'm not a racing guy but I do wanna buy The Crew when it comes out

Yeah I think most people who were gonna preorder have already reserved their console and made up their mind. I think both consoles are gonna be fun in different ways and I can't wait til November

You think it's going to bomb because of the release date? If so, why is that? If not, what are you referring to?

I think their lack of planning and preparation as shown by the numerous backtracks and changes will kill them. Giving Sorny a 1 week head start just adds to it imo, M$ has done everything they possibly could to tarnish their name and make themselves look bad this time around.

They did reverse their policies. The only real difference now is that you have to buy it with Kinect (adding $100).

I think it's ingenious. Go looking for a PS4 - nowhere to be found except for eBay at $900+, or go into most stores and get an XBox One for $500 plus whatever holiday sales there are.

Most hard-core fans have already got theirs pre-ordered - and so do the eBay scammers.

For most that can go with either, an XBox One that is cheaper than the PS4 Scammer's price is the way to go this holiday season...

So...the way I am reading this, Microsoft's clever strategy was to confuse people with questionable policies that were later reversed, in order to NOT sell too many preorders, so that the available launch Xboxes will seem like a better deal than the completely sold out PS4's? :D

I'm teasing here, really... What I do find ingenious though is how you can spin the fact that Sony sold significantly more preorders into something positive for Microsoft. :)

XBox One Launch Day pre-orders are sold out.

Companies do strange things at times to create free marketing buzz, as well as capitalize on lack of the competition's ability to supply the demand.

Nothing new here....

It's crazy because yesterday they were reported to be still available. I took a shot at it but I'm getting "Backordered" as a status. I'm in no hurry really. Arkham Origins is still on my plate next month.

Yeah I just heard. They had more launch day units available, but here there were long lists that went pass launch day order so I assume those people will be bumped up.

A few places are giving game upgrade deals if they buy the XB360 versions now...

I added myself to the Xbone Day one list on Amazon and 3 times this week they have said its available. I never went to the site since I've had a PS4 preorderd since minutes after the announcement and I have zero interest in a M$ console but it looks like Amazon still has a few available or more than likely people are cancelling their pre-orders of it.

I'm on the PS4 Launch editions mail list and I haven't seen a single availability email.

Not scientific, but its far from sold out if you really tried unlike the PS4 from what I've gathered first hand.

4 local gamestops have lists well over 200 long in queue for the PS4, while most say with cancellations and non pickups getting a XBone would be fairly likely on or around launch, getting a PS4 would be nearly impossible on launch or anywhere near launch if you don't already have a preorder in place.

Anyone that thinks the Xbone will "bomb" needs their head examined and this is coming from a guy that has been trashing the Xbone since it's announcement (and has pre-ordered the PS4). The Xbone will still sell millions, but the mistakes MS has made bundled with the way Sony has played off those mistakes, will cost them market share.

As for the Xbone "selling out" pre-orders, that honestly does not say much considering they are launching in only 13 countries compared to the 32 countries the PS4 is launching in. I imagine this partly due to the bundling of Xbone & Krapnect (I kid, sort of). MS has to make 1 Kinect for every Xbone due to the force bundling whereas Sony doesn't have to make near as many PS Cameras because it is unlikely that the ratio will be anywhere near 1:1.

well "bombing" is always relative...

The first xbox was successfull first entry in the market for Microsoft and because of this the 4 billion they lost were the entry price

the 360 istheir big success and yet untill now they are about to break even (they had 3 billion of losses from 2005 to 2009)
despite the fact that they launched a full year ahead of the PS3

Microsoft (and it's shareholders) want to make money at a point and they still have to recoup those losses of the first Xbox, that's why they stopped subsiding console sales with game sales

(i assume Sony has reduced their susbsiding as well, sicne they also blew a lot of moeny on the PS3)

the "subsiding expensive consoles with game sales" tactic doesn't work long term...

look at Nintendo:
Nintendo only has their game business they don't have Windows/Office like Microsoft or all the electronics like Sony to compensate for losses
because of that they always sold their consoles for a small profit or at least breaking even, which means even the Gamecube made them money despite bad sales

Because of those points Microsoft is in a tight spot:
-they want to make money, so they hardly can reduce the price early
-they launch simultaneously with Sony, against which they had a 1 year headstart last time
- they pissed off some markets abroad seriously, by focusing on the US/UK market so extreme, they even had to throw in Fifa for the european pre-orders to get some good-will back
