In all the talks & worries about the Xbox One, there's a constant dead horse being flailed at, and it's the power/graphics issue. Ultimately it's moot, get over it.

Figured I would not quote your whole post, but I did read it all...

For some, especially those with a lot already invested into their Xbox Live, the issue is moot. However, for many the issue is not moot... You are right that it is about the games, but when comparing two "next gen" consoles coming out around the same time, people are bound to compare the pros and cons. Kinect will be looked at as a PRO, but performance of multi platform games has to be looked at as a CON, and as you said it's about the games. In the end it won't matter much as both consoles will sell very well, but I really believe a big reason the Xbox One succeeds will be due to the success MS had with the 360 and not because it's the better console.

Those of you getting a PS4 in a short bit, probably saw the FAQ that Sony released, and don't care. You're still getting PS4.

I read through the whole FAQ, but most of it was either already known stuff or not a big surprise. Is there something specific you are referring to that would turn people off from buying the console? Or if you are referring to the media streaming/CD playing "issue"... I guess I can see this being an issue for some. I have done the media streaming in the past on my PS3, but have not used it in a long time. I have those features on my Smart TV, and to an extent on my Apple TV. I guess that's another reason why the PS4 was an easier sell to me that the Xbox One... I just want a GAME console.

I remember when MS first demo'd the Kinect and I thought it was cool (just like most people thought the Wii was cool). Then after using it I quickly realized it was still cool, but mostly a gimmick. It was neat in some games and especially fitness/sports type games, but after while found myself not using it.

They haven't shown anything from the new Kinect that makes me want to have it. They have increased the amount of "cool" things you can do, but in the end it's not necessary or doesn't really add much to the gaming experience.

Probably the best thing about the new Kinect is they increased the bandwidth and added stuff like dedicated processors on board and in the peripheral. For gaming purposes, it can now be used in conjunction with a controller. So instead of it being relegated to dance games and games on rails, the tech can complement conventional controls. This is what they're doing in Ryse and BF4.

In any case, the TV stuff just won't ever work here in NZ (we suffer from a monopoly in pay TV), and probably in many other places outside the US.

From what I've seen, TV integration is pretty much an HDMI pass through with the program guide downloaded through the internet. The XB1 works like a remote and uses an IR blaster to control the cable box. The cable companies' business model isn't disrupted, but the setup allows the console to do things like snap a TV feed alongside a game, bring up the program guide natively, use voice control to choose programs, etc. They're basically doing what Nintendo did with TVii, except they're going a step beyond by using the HDMI pass through to do voice recognition, DVR, etc.

Yeah, I get that, but in the end people will try it out, but most will end up sticking with controller only. I hate to keep using the word "gimmick" since it is cool tech, but from what I have seen it's not to the point where it drastically improves the gaming experience. I guess it's a wait and see, but I just don't think it's quite ready for mass acceptance.

it still requires an external cable/satellite box
.. what is wrong with just using the built in cable tuner of your TV ? i have built in over the air, satellite and cable tuners in mine and with 2 common interface slots i could theoretically sign up to 2 pay-TV providers, and it has DVR abilities built in

do TV makers not build in any digital cable tuners for the US market?

I have no clue how it would work with an internal tuner and I'm not sure it even can. I think the video stream has to pass through the console in order to be processed and snapped by the OS. With an internal tuner the video is downstream of the console so I don't see how it would work without looping, which is kinda pointless

And yeah, in the US market the norm is an external cable box hooked up to the TV

Is it weird that despite all the **** the console is getting, I'd still prefer it over the PS4?

Continuation of my Live profile, (what I imagine to be) a better controller, monolithic console design...

Logically I can see why people would prefer the PS4, it's cheaper and on paper it's impressive.

I mean, I'll still end up buying both, like I have done for the past few generations but I'm just looking at all the arguments online about why the One will fail and it sounds like a bunch of kids went on Wikipedia and decided to go tribal.

yeah, saying the one will fail is pretty silly. Its obviously not going to sell as well as ps4 out the gate, but fail??? come on. Its going to sell a ton this year and will only build once great exclusives come out and the price drops in a little over a year.

Exactly what I have been saying all along... I am getting the PS4 at launch, but I also believe the Xbone will do well despite the mistakes MS made. Look at the PS3 as an example. It's launch was horrid... It was late to the party, expensive as hell, difficult to develop for, etc. However, in the end, it's neck and neck with 360 sales (if not more).

Neck and neck almost.

Should be interesting to see what happens with the new price-points over the holidays (I've seen the XBox 360E 4GB unit go for $179 the past few weeks on sale) and the subsequent sales for those who want to step up but don't want to buy the next gens.

I'm looking to pick up another 360 for my younger brother. Then the 3 of us can finally get around to finishing Gears of War online co-op.

We finished Halo over the summer but then his Elite had to go RROD.

The reality is that the majority of gamers only buy 1 console.

If they are also buying at Launch they tend to be more dedicated gamers (rather than just hardcore) and then what seems to happen is they entrench themselves completely in that product. They are that product (its becomes their identity).

It's as if the console choice is saying something about them personally, therefore any other choice has to be wrong and threatening to their existence / mindset.

So whenever a company inevitably makes a faux par, instead of just thinking "yep they're bloody idiots but it doesnt effect my enjoyment" like a rationale person would, foks on either side of the 'war' will then spend
ever increasing time defending or criticising the poor choices of a company in order to validate / justify their own purchase because they feel bad news / feedback somehow threatens them and their enjoyment.

It also makes them have a mindset that anyone else who chooses another console automatically wrong.

Sadly yes its very inane and stupid but seems to be common in all pop culture over the years.

We will have people who engross themselves in music of one band or genre, comics, movies, literature and even art (looking at critiques opinions of artists throughout history) the evidence of the fan boy has always existed. What we so have now however is Internet and public fora where people can share / defend / rage on each other which in a way has exacerbated the situation in the modern era by giving everyone anonymous vocal platforms.

This forum is itself, not immune to it... The last generation battle was a disaster in here for a good 18 months. Nastiness and bitterness reigned supreme here. Thankfully this place got a major shakedown and those users that remain in this sub forum (many have been here years) are all pretty much intolerant of these fanboy thought processes even if they have a personal preference themselves - we don't go down the silliness route and I hope this new console war (which is such a stupid concept in itself) that I hope we won't get a raft of new users in here raging about one or the other.

For the reasonable frame of mind person it's clear to see 80 or 90 percent of titles on any console are multi platform and that it's the few exclusives that make up the purchasing decision for most users. More so than resolution of a game or the subjective 'best version' syndrome in multi platform titles.

Whilst Microsoft HAVE undeniably made the Xbox one a bit of a PR disaster for the ardent gamers. Gamestop reportedly have a 1:4 ratio of pre orders favouring the PS4 which itself is unimaginable a year ago, this advantage for PS4 and perception of best console for early adoptees pretty much is meaningless when a console generation is 10 years down the line.

Sony PS3 was a PR disaster and there is no question the initial sake of PS3 units suffered due to it. Even if you consider the dreaded ring of death on Xbox which was awful for first couple of years did less damage than the Marketing feck ups by Sony in first years of life.

So with dedicated early adopter gamers, you can not deny that this will hurt sales for a while for Microsoft, but long term it will likely all balance out as long as they continue to redress their faux pars quickly and importantly convincingly. Likewise once game vacuum which if first 18 months of a new console is over and developers are actually getting to grips with hardware.

Interestingly it does appear Microsoft has made many of the mistakes Sony made with PS3 prior to launch, but it does appear that they are quicker to address many of them than Sony did. But yes the launch numbers/figures WILL be affected because of it.

But don't let the Sony ships blah blah compared to Microsoft news that will come out in the coming weeks make you think it's all over because we gave another 10 years of these consoles.

But inevitably those gamers who I described above WILL see that news as fodder to validate their purchase or as a threat on their purchase dependent on which they chose. Them will spend ages inanely attacking or defending it on forums as if utterly irationally.... but let's just hope not here.

I have always bought every console at launch but this year have chosen only to get one, not because I see one as better than the other - but because the launch lineup on both is pretty weak as far as exclusives go and therefore until their is a sizeable library of exclusives I see no point buying both this year. I also suspect in 6-12 months many current launch exclusives will be available on the other platform.

The reason I chose PS4 was not price as I'm spending same money for the kill zone bundle as a Xbox one with free Fifa game, but because I have a large catalogue of PSN purchases and because of the generally slim launch lineups Knak is a bigger sell to me than Ryse or Dead Rising.

Having a preference is understandable, it happens with any product let alone consoles. I guess I just don't get the aggressive, tribe like mentality that people* seem to adopt.

Like you I find it hard to justify buying both consoles this year. My brothers picking up an Xbox One that I'll probably buy a few games for just for the sake of it, but I cancelled my PS4 pre-order for now.

*people meaning the general internet population currently caught up in the launch hype.

I was originally going to get the Xbox One but now I am eying towards an iPad Air 32gb to take the place of my iPad 1. I have the Xbox 360 though.

Also,
I have a $20 off code for Xbox live 12 month membership if purchased on Amazon. First person asking for it gets it. Expires tomorrow at 11:59pm pst.

All these darn PS4 reviews coming out today are making me real anxious for the Xbox One... So close, but the 22nd feels so far away

Launch is still next week right? Like it hasn't been cancelled or delayed? :p

Even in the UK media there is a fair bit of hype for the PS4 but hardly a mention about the Xbox despite it coming out a week earlier...

similar in german language media ... looking at the media coverage one could guess that the ps4 would be launching next week and not the xbox
stealing quite a bit of pre launch hype

Just checked my bank, and M$ just charged my card for my xbox one preorder. Hoping to get some tracking info in the next few days. Got the day off on the 22nd to be home for its arrival. Really excited. Already have my copy of Ghosts, as my local gamestop went ahead and gave me my preordered copy.

I decided to order directly from M$ after GameStop ran out of their first batch of preorders. I decided not to order from them, even if they got more preorders later on. I love my local store, but some of the newbie employees really jumped on the ps4 fanboy bandwagon when I went in to attempt preorder. They attempted to talk me into getting a ps4 instead since they had plenty left to reserve. They gave the typical fanboy rationales at that time-"made for gamers", "doesn't spy on you", "more powerful", etc etc. I left very angry with that experience. Why would u try to talk an xbox guy into getting a ps? Silly. Nothing wrong with them in general, but I'm an xbox user since the very beginning. I left that store with the very distinct feeling that they were instructed to push the ps4 preorders very hard during that time period. It just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Can't wait till the 22nd!!!:)

Gamestop employees are the WORST. I went to get ghosts yesterday for xbox one since they are selling it already, and the chick behind the register says "Are you sure you want it? Its not very good" ... ARENT YOU SUPOSED TO BE GETTING ME TO SPEND MONEY?

And also, I pre ordered with amazon on June 10th, still no charge on my card or anything. Says my delivery date is the 22nd and thats about it.

Just wanted to say that if some peoples UPS comes late (COD Ghosts Hardened Xbox 360 came around 7:30pm from Amazon) you can chat with amazon support and request a pick up instead of delivery.
