What the Yankees should have done is kept Alex Rodriguez at shortstop, move Derek Jeter to either second or third base, then when Cano comes up put Cano where Jeter isn't.

If A-Rod would've stayed at short, I bet he would still be there for a couple more seasons. He wouldn't be good defensively anymore, but he would be slightly better than Jeter.

Honestly I don't see Jeter staying at shortstop much longer. Yeah, it's a shame and takes away part of the coolness factor to having Jeter at short, but honestly the guy is a trainwreck there now. His range is nowhere near acceptable for a shortstop.

I don't know if Cano can play shortstop... he probably lacks the range, but from what I've seen of him his arm is pretty damn accurate and stronger than most second baseman's.
Why move Cano out of 2nd? He is great at the position. When A-Rod came in Jeter was still great at SS, it would have been a train wreck to move Jeter just to please A-Rod at the time. If A-Rod was already SS for the Yankees and Jeter was the new man then yes I could see moving Jeter. A-Rod will become the everyday DH when Posada leaves in a year.

I probably wouldn't have moved Jeter either as he was firmly planted as the shortstop of the Yankees, but he was never great at that position. Even in his best years his defense was serviceable at best. His offense, leadership and grit make him a great player. His defense has done nothing but bring his overall player rating down.

Maybe from a PR angle, but not from a baseball standpoint. Jeter has never been a good fielding shortstop. Not in any year. There have been a couple years where the stats say he wasn't much worse than average, but none where he's been good. It's just the position he came to the majors playing already and where the Yankees had a slot for him. It would have been nice if he had willingly moved over to second when Rodriguez joined the team, but he really had no reason to offer to do so.

Now that the Yankees have Cano and Teixeira, there really isn't another logical position to put Jeter in. I've heard some speculation about putting him in the outfield, but that seems like a half-assed solution.

The most likely solution will be to move Jeter to 3rd, and move A-Rod to DH. That won't happen for at least a year though as Posada is going to be the full time DH for 2011 plus the fact that Jeter wants to get his 3,000 hit at SS.

Especially with Granderson, Swisher, and Gardner playing those spots. By making Posada the every day DH, I see that Yankees are not serious about Crawford(unless they deal Gardner). So yeah, there is no logical spot for Jeter besides DH.

Jeter will never be the everyday DH. Any moves that do happen will be at least 2 years down the road.

Oh jeeze, a 38 year old who was never considered good at shortstop still playing shortstop. When does the balance of honoring Jeter, or improving the team occur?

I say one more year of Jeter at shortstop.

You do know that Jeter will be a first ballot hall of famer.

And there have been many HoFers who couldn't play the field well in the their last few seasons. That's not a reason to trot him out there when he's hurting the team.

Eventually it gets to the point where the player's pride (and the team's willingness to cater to it) hurts the team in a very noticeable way. The best thing they can hope for is that Jeter volunteers for a move, unless someone in the front office is willing to be the bad guy.

Congrats to Buster Posey and Neftali Perez, your 2010 NL and AL Rookies of the Year. Well deserved in both cases.
