The only way to do a nandroid will be with a custom recovery, so you are correct. The root will not stick through the GE RUU flash, so after you flash the GE RUU, you will have a device that looks like it just came from the google play store, except that you will have an unlocked bootloader, and s-off. This means that you will have the stock recovery and will not have root. If you want to go back to stock you need to flash the 1.44 hboot and relock your bootloader before you flash the RUU for your carrier. Also of note, if you are going to unlock your phone's sim, make sure you do that before flashing the GE RUU, I went back to stock for the sole purpose of unlocking my sim.

The unrooted and GE RUU option is basically what I'm after. I thought the S-OFF thing was something extra I needed to do if I wanted but not a requirement as such, though reading more it sounds as though I need this if I want to go back to stock.

I found it pretty easy via terminal using adb and fastboot I guess this was because most of the commands were readily available and I did the unlock and S-OFF via revone (was still on 4.1.2 at that stage).
The only "heart attack" I had was when I changed the MID and CID via the ENG hboot as I didn't fully read the destructions prior to starting and couldn't figure out how to get back to a normal hboot after making the changes 😀
As to why, I also wanted the stock experience without the skin (even though Sense is minor compared to TW). Plus it gives me a chance to play with Android in the way Google intended it to be rather than with some manufacturers rendition. That is what I am after from my initial Android experience, if I get bored then I can move to either the stock ROM or other ROMs and have more of a play.

Agreed. I eagerly await the day we get a one-click solution to flashing a different rom ( or even that modoco switch).
Wouldn't it be awesome if every Android phone had both stock and the OEM skin on board and you could choose between them at will? Every device would effectively be a Nexus - even if OEMs/carriers took their time with updates to their skins users could simply switch over to stock and be on the latest version. Google could finally achieve a level of update adoption comparable to iOS.
Please Google make this happen - role on KLP 😉

Yeah, agreed. I've done my fair share of unlocking/rooting/ROM flashing but considering the changes from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 are minimal IMO, it's not worth the hassle, especially since I only use a Mac as well and there is generally far less info/options available.

It's not complicated at all. I'm a regular guy with no experience with coding/programming or anything like that and I've rooted multiple devices.

Once you make it a GE, it'll get updates directly from Google? aka 4.3 when it's rolling out to the real HTC One GE?

Yes. As long as you are running the GE rom, and have your CID set to GOOGL001 and your MID to whatever it is meant to be set at - then your device is essentially the EXACT same phone as the Google Edition phone, and therefore you 'should' receive OTA.

A major flaw with the One that I don't hear many talk about is how damn low the audio volume is when you record a video. If you don't practically scream at the phone, you won't be able to hear anything.

I haven't had that problem at all myself. I actually recorded some people singing Seanos and regailing stories at a traditional Irish Rambling House and it never struggled, everything came out surprisingly clear and crisp...
You might want to give that MoDaCo switch a try Couch, they've just released the public beta.

On all three Ones I've tried out they've all had below average volume when it comes to video. (Compared to my Note 2 anyway)

People are saying that verizon will get get the htc one on August 1st. That's what I've been holding out for. iPhone 5S doesn't interest me.
At this point, I'd wait to see if an updated or refreshed HTC One will be out around the holidays.
While anything is possible, I rather doubt HTC will refresh the One so soon. I bought mine upon release and it's been just great.
That said my personal favorite is still my Galaxy S4.
HTC did this last year with the One X (released in April or May) and then the One X+ that was released around the holidays.
That's true, but with the financial situation slipping, who knows if they have the resources. I'd sure like to see a resurgence of HTC, a few years ago they were looking good and doing well in the Android space. It would be great to see them gain momentum, with a strong return to success.
