I just got my new iPad yesterday. While I didn't get it expecting it to be able to play the MKV files I have without conversion, I got pleasantly surprised when I tried some for fun today in AVPlayerHD!
I've always had to rely on Air Video and Handbreak in converting the my MKV files to playback on my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. It was so tiresome I just got a Galaxy S2. You may remember me posting a thread about it before, complaining about the iPhone 4's inability to decode this format. I think that thread got me at least 100 downvotes...
So I made this thread to tell fellow anime fans still on the fence about the new iPad - it will play all your 720p anime you get in MKV, 8-bit and even 10-bit, with ASS subs without a problem! Here is a video of myself demoing it below!

There goes my final reason of keeping my Android devices. They're going to TradeMe and luckily before the Galaxy S3 gets announced next month!
I just got AVPlayerHD and tried it with the exact same file you used "[Ayu]_Minami-ke_-_10_[720p_H264_MP3][864FC2A6]" and that worked.
However if I try to play any other episodes from the exact same season and subbing group I get sped up sound and no image.
Is there a reason only that episode seems to work? Find it odd how in your example the episode you choose is the only one that actually plays for me.
Can this stream from my windows shared drive?
This has always been a major limitation of the iPad IMO
But this app still isn't optimized for a retina display, correct? So I'm assuming the playback won't be true 720p resolution, it will just upscale the resolution of how it would have played on the old iPad. That is, until they update the app.

I tried Air Video and it streamed a 720p mkv from my PC perfectly.
The files will be played at their true resolution, why would the it need to be updated for Retina?
Only thing that needs to be updated for retina is the images used in apps.
I just tested it for a few minutes, in different parts of the film. Same throughout.
720p was fine though![]()
No shame here! I'm bi-platform!
I've used, for many years, the combination of ANYDVD HD and CLONEDVD (or CLONEDVD mobile), and have recently been trying out rippers for Blu-rays, but have not been happy with what I've found.
Definitely need ANYDVD HD, but I'd like a good recommendation for a blu-ray ripper.

Also, I bought AVplayerHD today, and loaded up a couple of short 1080p, very high quality clips, and it's nothing short of spectacular!
I wish my AVplayerHD purchase would allow me to download the AVplayer version (iPhone/iPod) but alas, it'll cost me another 3 bucks to do so.
So far, I like it.![]()
Avplayerhd is good but it worked better on my iPad 2. Guessing it's not optimized for the new iPad. For example two of the same exact 720p mkv files were played and it played hitch free on the iPad 2 while it lagged behind on the new iPad. Most up to date version of avplayerhd. Not saying all 720 mkvs lag on the new iPad with this player. It's a good app glad I bought it
It's a shame VLC was pulled from the App store. It's still my go to video player.
Wonder how this compares

Same here. 720p episode of season 5 of Chuck in MKV, laggy and juddery as hell in AVPlayerHD on the new iPad.
I've had a play with a few different files. Some 720p content is ok, but a lot isn't, and 1080p is no chance.
You better be right. I'm going to buy this and if the video doesn't play 720p I'll be mighty angry.

get MakeMKV. you can then re-encode the MKVs into h.264 M4V files with Handbrake.
