Was it choppy from the start, or just random choppiness throughout the movie?

I used short 10-15min clips, and they seemed fine...
I just tested it for a few minutes, in different parts of the film. Same throughout.

720p was fine though :)

I just got my new iPad yesterday. While I didn't get it expecting it to be able to play the MKV files I have without conversion, I got pleasantly surprised when I tried some for fun today in AVPlayerHD!

I've always had to rely on Air Video and Handbreak in converting the my MKV files to playback on my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. It was so tiresome I just got a Galaxy S2. You may remember me posting a thread about it before, complaining about the iPhone 4's inability to decode this format. I think that thread got me at least 100 downvotes...

So I made this thread to tell fellow anime fans still on the fence about the new iPad - it will play all your 720p anime you get in MKV, 8-bit and even 10-bit, with ASS subs without a problem! Here is a video of myself demoing it below!

There goes my final reason of keeping my Android devices. They're going to TradeMe and luckily before the Galaxy S3 gets announced next month!

I just got AVPlayerHD and tried it with the exact same file you used "[Ayu]_Minami-ke_-_10_[720p_H264_MP3][864FC2A6]" and that worked.

However if I try to play any other episodes from the exact same season and subbing group I get sped up sound and no image.

Is there a reason only that episode seems to work? Find it odd how in your example the episode you choose is the only one that actually plays for me.

//Edit Seems transferring over Wifi does not work so well and every episode but episode 10 (Major coincedance?) corrupted on the way.

I have tried every episode in the series from the same sub group, and they all work. Quite frankly I have no idea what went wrong.

The only videos that ever gave me problems were some 10-bit video from certain groups where the color would be strange, such as Underwater's releases of Another. Even then, the video and audio come through without delays.

But this app still isn't optimized for a retina display, correct? So I'm assuming the playback won't be true 720p resolution, it will just upscale the resolution of how it would have played on the old iPad. That is, until they update the app.

It is true 720p, but rather it's the screen that makes it blurry because the resolution is just so high.

The files will be played at their true resolution, why would the it need to be updated for Retina?

Only thing that needs to be updated for retina is the images used in apps.

----------

I tried Air Video and it streamed a 720p mkv from my PC perfectly.

Air Video requires its own application to be run in order to share files, that is not streaming from a shared drive.

I personally have also been looking for a decent app that will play from my shared drives and only found one and I do not really want to buy it to test it.

I'm not too familiar with streaming. Is a shared drive one that directly connects to the network? That type of setup does sound appealing if the software exists for the iPad to grab files directly from it.

For streaming from a desktop computer, anyone know if Air Video is the best choice? I've only tried the free demo and it worked great. I am interested in streaming photos as well. Is StreamtoMe a good app? And I am curious how its video capability compares to Air Video.

Edit: Anyone try File Explorer? It's a relatively new app, but it might be very good.

Are there any free Apps that allow playback of MKV files? All seem to charge and while I'm eventually going to get a few apps right now I'm low on funds w/ this newly purchased 32GB and case.

You better be right. I'm going to buy this and if the video doesn't play 720p I'll be mighty angry.

Same thing happened to me. Choppy throughout the whole movie but still watchable. At least it doesnt crash.

Avplayerhd is good but it worked better on my iPad 2. Guessing it's not optimized for the new iPad. For example two of the same exact 720p mkv files were played and it played hitch free on the iPad 2 while it lagged behind on the new iPad. Most up to date version of avplayerhd. Not saying all 720 mkvs lag on the new iPad with this player. It's a good app glad I bought it

No shame here! I'm bi-platform!

I've used, for many years, the combination of ANYDVD HD and CLONEDVD (or CLONEDVD mobile), and have recently been trying out rippers for Blu-rays, but have not been happy with what I've found.

Definitely need ANYDVD HD, but I'd like a good recommendation for a blu-ray ripper.

Also, I bought AVplayerHD today, and loaded up a couple of short 1080p, very high quality clips, and it's nothing short of spectacular!

I wish my AVplayerHD purchase would allow me to download the AVplayer version (iPhone/iPod) but alas, it'll cost me another 3 bucks to do so.

So far, I like it. :)

DVDfab can copy the entire Blu-ray for free to a folder. Unfortunately, I found all the other DVDfab features/products glitchy. Very good for mkv.remux to pull out the subs, but that is paid after the trial.

Same here. 720p episode of season 5 of Chuck in MKV, laggy and juddery as hell in AVPlayerHD on the new iPad.

I've had a play with a few different files. Some 720p content is ok, but a lot isn't, and 1080p is no chance.

AVplayerHD just needs an update to optimise it for the new iPad. I expect it will arrive soon, the apps been updated quite frequently in the past.

I've got VLC, I'll second that it was terrible on the iPad. If it hadn't been banned I expect it would have been improved via updates, but that isn't going to happen now obviously. If you missed it, you really aren't missing anything.

Makes sense. The OP probably didn't notice because Japanese animation is so limited.

AVplayerHD does indeed play supported 720p and 1080p wonderfully.

I cannot believe how beautiful a 1080p video looks on the new iPad!

The new iPad uses hardware decoding for natively supported video formats, namely, .MOV and .MP4 and .M4V. If you want the best experience on your new iPad with any video player, use (or convert to) one of the supported formats.

I'm no expert on video formats, containers and codecs, but after reading a bit about it, the consensus is if you have a supported format, it works great.

So, did you buy it? It's only $2.99...would you really be that angry if you lost 3 bucks? In any case, it's a great player.

get MakeMKV. you can then re-encode the MKVs into h.264 M4V files with Handbrake.

I played around with ripping a blu-ray on my Windows PC yesterday (it has a blu-ray drive, obviously, and a 4 core/8-thread Core i7 CPU).

I discovered that AnyDVD can directly RIP a blu-ray (you get the entire blu-ray ripped to a folder in native format). I did that, and it was relatively quick.

I then used handbrake to convert the 28GB .m2ts file to .M4V, and it would have taken over 3 hours and created a gigantic (12GB) file. I had the handbrake settings as some have suggested for 1080p iPad video, but the file size was too big.

How long does it take to convert a MKV to a M4V with handbrake?
