You're testing these players on your iPad 1? I'd guess you'd have better performance on a iPad 2 or the new iPad since they are dual core and more powerful.

No, on my new iPad. I watched a whole episode of House 720p, smooth as butter, using QQ Player HD. You should all try it out.

I've been using iflicks to remux. Most tv shows take less than 5 minutes to remux and is compatible with iTunes and the iPad plays them wonderfully through videos app.

How do you keep 10bit anime with stylised subs into mp4? I tried subler but the subs got reformatted.

I just got my new iPad yesterday. While I didn't get it expecting it to be able to play the MKV files I have without conversion, I got pleasantly surprised when I tried some for fun today in AVPlayerHD!

I've always had to rely on Air Video and Handbreak in converting the my MKV files to playback on my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. It was so tiresome I just got a Galaxy S2. You may remember me posting a thread about it before, complaining about the iPhone 4's inability to decode this format. I think that thread got me at least 100 downvotes...

So I made this thread to tell fellow anime fans still on the fence about the new iPad - it will play all your 720p anime you get in MKV, 8-bit and even 10-bit, with ASS subs without a problem! Here is a video of myself demoing it below!

YouTube: video

There goes my final reason of keeping my Android devices. They're going to TradeMe and luckily before the Galaxy S3 gets announced next month!

Right, cool video. All you really told us is that AV playerHD plays MKV's? I thought you meant natively, maybe should change the tread title.

+1

Downvotes are meaningless.

And to be blunt, the TV show and movie "scene" is quite a lot behind when compared to the anime scene. Most of them are still on their XviDs and I haven't seen a single group release anything in hi10p, and those files are more likely to cause problems than say, a 2-3 mbit h.264 file.
The problem is, that many Blu-ray disks use only 8-Bit, not 10.

For better playback, I suggest you jailbreak and install xbmc. It handles the mkv stream differently and uses private APIs to feed the video stream straight into the hardware decoder chip so it doesn't compromise your battery life. The rest of the apple sanctioned methods are just being done in software.

Just got TTplayer for iPad (3) and I dropped a 720P Blu-Ray Rip MKV file (Around 7.7gb) into the app.
It plays almost perfectly, but not perfectly smooth. I can imagine 1080p would be even less smooth.

I have airvideo downloaded as well-- I don't want to buy any other apps unnecessarily -- what should I do on my mac to re-encode the nearly 8GB MKV file to play flawlessly on the iPad without sacrificing too much resolution, because the whole point is to not have to sacrifice the quality so I can view this video on a retina display.

Any ideas here? (I have almost all the video encoding software since I am an editor) just wanted to see what everyone here thinks before I go on a conversion trial and error spree.

Unfortunately, TTplayerHD doesn't support HW MKV playback. Do NOT try to watch MKV's with this app! Get something decent instead; most importantly, AVPlayerHD

... unless you have an iPad 3, where XBMC doesn't support the Retina screen.

Don't bother with converting, particularly if the subs are animated like those of http://www.auby.no/files/video_test..._vorbis_styled_and_unstyled_subs_suzumiya.mkv . If the videos aren't high-def, either use XBMC (after jailbreaking) or HD Player Pro (used to be ATK Player by Khoa Tran Anh) to directly play the MKV's. No other players have full SSA support.

Note that QQPlayerHD is not as recommended for MKV / MP4 playback as, say, AVPlayerHD, because it still doesn't use hardware acceleration for not even MP4 playback, let alone MKV.

iPad 3rd Gen now supports 1080p MP4. More specs quoted from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/

Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

MKV is not supported format. Refer to the below guide if you'd like to preserve 1080p quality:

http://www.ipad-converters.org/mkv-to-new-ipad-3/

Why bother, AVPlayerHD plays mkvs and supports hawrdware decoding now, so it's flawless. Unless you want to reduce file sizes, there really is no point converting.

Semi-necro post, I apologize...
With the release of the iPhone5 has anyone tried playing back 720p or 1080p Hi10p anime mkv files with the iphone5 using AVplayerHD or any other recommended MKV player?

Looking at ImperialX's original post/video, the iPad 3 has weaker processor in comparison to the new iphone5 A6. I am assuming it would perform better then. right?

edit:
i just realized that AVplayerHD is no longer in the app store.
are there any other 'current' suggestions besides XBMC?

Thank you for responding to a post that was so old.

Please don't bump old posts, it gets annoying.

Version 1.63 was the best.
After that everything went down

AVPlayerHD? Yeah, although I'm still running 1.52 on all my devices. Still has DTS support, alongside AC3. Experienced really bad motion/jerkiness with 1.60 and above, same problem on iPhone5, Mini and iPad 3.

No idea how good the new version (2.0) is, but the absence of DTS means I'm going to stick on 1.52 until it stops working altogether.

free vs paid?

did you even bother to compare it with the free ones?

avplayer hd isn't free, yes you could go "don't be cheap just buy it" but i don't see why i need to pay cash for stuff apple could support for free and that you could watch on a computer anyways (yes apple could easily support it, infact most of modern features are ripped of jailbroken devices YEARS ago)

there's already FREE versions of players that player mkv and more

did you at least try both paid and free and give us your opinion? anyways i'm gonna test a few free ones and maybe see if i can test the avplayer hd free

Yeah but considering how nicely AVplayedHD works its not really worth the hassle if you watch a lot of video on your iPad. And it received frequent updates, one of the best purchases i made for my iPad.
