The new Mac mini is almost certainly coming

Well, everything that needs to be said about the Mini has been said. Unsubscribing from this thread for a while because the notifications are blowing up my inbox.

Happily keeping my 2012 i7 and will be upgrading the ram soon.

Have fun kids. 🙁
 
Those who bought alternate small systems many months ago are laughing.
Guess it's the spec most of us expected, but it still feels like a let down.

But they don't give specs of this sort for thunderbolt digital video output. I suppose it could be better.

Its now LPDDR3 so you are stuck with what you purchase it with. They took away the one feature Steve Jobs showed off when he announced the 2010 mac mini and that was the ability to upgrade the ram through the door on the bottom.

If that's 100% confirmed re soldered RAM, it's a pity. It also means I'll probably be buying an older Mini as future back up for my 2011, HD6630M Mini.
 
Base mini with 8g ram (+$100) and 1g fusion drive (+$250!) = $849!!!

Looks like I'm gonna have to live with my Asus $189 Chromebox.

Guys... The entry level is a joke for the European price.
EUR 510 here in Germany. Old gen was a better choice.
Now you have to choose between a crappy 510EUR machine and a less crappy 800EUR one. 🙁
 
Trying to decide out I'm feeling here. This is the punt they could have released a year ago. The perfect configuration to bridge the time needed for Intel to make it interesting but mere months before they can.

This change makes sense. With the dual TB boards, most screen configs should be covered.
 
If you look at http://www.apple.com/mac/compare/
it says up to 16GB RAM, but none of the three "default" models have 16GB as an option, though it's there when you "select," it says $200 extra (for $899 for the mid-range Mini) for the extra 8GB.

It's LPDDR3. Is the LPDDR3 soldered in? If so, what a disappointment.

I was wondering that too. If it uses replaceable LPDDR3 DIMMs (which hasn't been confirmed yet) then it could very well be that 32GB will work (if not officially supported) even though Apple lists 16GB max.


The difference between the $699 model and the $999 model is a faster dual-core processor and the addition of a 128GB SSD (as part of the 1TB fusion drive). Or can get the $699 model with a BTO fusion drive for $899. I wonder how much I might save by attempting a do-it-yourself fusion drive upgrade. Do we even know what kind of SSDs the new Mini supports?

update: I see it is "PCIe-based Flash Storage."

Why would they be laughing? They got what they want and needed. I did not. Some others, it seems, also did not.
Are those people you refer to smug a$$holes? Are they laughing at me? Or are they laughing out of joy because they are relieved they didn't have to wait to be disappointed and have been joyfully using their machines?

Or are they nervously laughing because they either: a. were smart or informed enough to tell the update wouldn't be worth it for them; b. got lucky; or c. they think they weren't gamed by bad ole' Apple?

It's even worse for my old 2011 model... The i5 2520M is just as fast as the 1.4 and only marginally slower than the 2.8Ghz i5 4200H and it was released 3 years ago.

Best Buy was selling the quad core i7 version a couple months back for $650, before applying a 10% coupon. I passed on it, held out for today's announcement I guess. Should've bought it 😡
 
If I can install the 256 samsung SSD I have sitting in my drawer and can upgrade to 32gb of RAM, I'm in. If not, I'm building a hack.

I have to have something that is mine that runs Yosemite so I can continue to support the rest of my extended family. You think they would all pitch in $50 a piece so I could get something new. Maybe I should start billing them. hmmmmm...... 😱

I think you're joking, but obviously you should not be putting those BTO upgrades onto the $499 base model. Starting with the $699 middle model, 8GB RAM and a 1GB fusion drive would cost $899. That's $50 more than your quote, but the processor (and also integrated graphics) will be much faster.

A LOT of companies buy Minis to use as everything from servers to render farms... quad cores mean a lot. Mine has a render farm with over forty of them because they are so cost effective.
 
It's nice one can now have a dual-display setup with 2560x1600.
That's about the only advantage I see. And if you do buy those, the price of the MacMini becomes a secondary issue, at best.

It will be interesting to see how much faster the 3.0GHz i7 edition is compared to my 2012 2.3GHz.

Of course, the best idea would have been to wait and by a 2012 version now, 2nd hand at a vast discount ;-)
