well i do have to say, being a mac mini fan for quite some time, it might not make any sense to buy one even if its refreshed. You can buy the 3rd level 21.5in iMac (maybe even a mid level) with incredible specs that a maxed out mini would not come with it. If theres no quad core mini, then its not even worth it to buy a mini. i see what apple is doing here, gets people like me to think this way.

level 2 and 3 iMacs have graphics with dedicated ram and quad core with 4k display and all the ports you need, student price on that is $1399, upgrade to ssd and you're at $1489, tough to get a maxed out mini (most likely for $1000) with those specs and then you'd have to buy a 4k screen as well.

It's the throw-away generation. That's why I never got the iMac. How do you use the display by itself when the hardware is outdated in a few years? You're better off buying a separate 4K display.
I tried one a couple of years ago. Had it for 2 weeks and sent it back. Just couldn't bring myself to buy an AIO.

Hah. The iMac Pro; a mass of expensive equipment crammed into an AIO case,...
...with a crappy thermal envelope to throttle all that expensive equipment.

And no mention of the Mini. Even if they offer a silent upgrade, it is likely to be a token one, a lá 2014.

Time to find a new techno-religion. I hear the sweet sounds of a Linux box with my name written all over it.

The new Mac Mini is almost certainly not coming.

Don't see your screen shot anywhere on that page. Also looking at the up close pics of the back their is no compartment.
Edit
I did find the screen shot but I don't see the compartment.
Also this guy asked Apple Support????

If you click the link, then click the 27in tab, scroll down to memory, you'll see it.

That link is wrong. The chat is wrong. The apple support person is wrong.

If you want to enjoy the hobby of computers, the best advice I can give is to consider the Mac Mini to be done.

Even if it comes, it's unlikely to be anything like it once was.
I don't enjoy the hobby of computers…. If I did I would be building my own, optimising bang for buck, installing this OS and generally mucking around with them. Some folks here get a kick out of doing just that…… along with putting the boot into Apple. Do ya'll think Apple gives a hoot?

I am just an average Joe who uses computers to do stuff, nothing too demanding. I want something I can rely on with minimum hassle, minimal meddling, and can be easily occasionally transported. I don't want a portable with a poky little screen to tote everywhere, every day. A modestly specced Mac Mini has been fine for my humble needs. It will remain so for a while yet, but in due course it will almost certainly be replaced with another modestly specced Mac Mini.

The Mac Mini is still available, but no one is forcing you to buy one….. The new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming.

When you consider they spec-bumped the MB Air then you know the Mini is in big trouble

Actually, it can happen, that Apple removes the Mac mini from Store in the comming weeks. They made this move in tha past, so it won't be a big surprise.

I think the future Mac line for Apple are the notebooks, iMacs and maybe the modular Mac Pro, whatever that will be. Everything else is "hasta la vista, baby!"

Big deal - so you may be able to up the RAM - that's where it begins and ends.

In that case you want something bang up to date such as the Intel NUC. :)

That's an iMac for ya... Always been the case since it's 1998 debut. Unless you disassemble one. Don't know why anyone would've expected Apple to release an iMac that can be easily upgraded. It's never happened.

Things just got interesting for the Mini and lower end laptops.

From MacRumors front page:

Apple announced a new version of its Metal graphics technology during Monday's keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference. As part of macOS High Sierra, Metal 2 will officially support external GPUs, allowing any Mac with a Thunderbolt 3 port to benefit from graphics hardware powerful enough to run demanding virtual reality applications and games.

I wonder how many users need to upgrade to support doing something new and necessary ... not related to speed, form-factor or features but rather applications and large-scale functionality - I bet most of those who upgrade want some leading-edge, non-essential feature (4K - 5K) or blazing speed. If you curb your desire for the latest technology because what you have "just works" then you'll be fine until Apple breaks your configuration with an upgrade or loss of functionality - that may buy you some time and perhaps the product that will work for you will surface in some future iteration.

The greatest PIA I have is not knowing what the future Apple landscape looks like - thus unable to chart an upgrade path as in the past you could work up to the level you desire over the course of years ... now you never know what to expect (32-bit vs 64-bit issues on the way with iPhone) - lock-out from new upgrades and lack of on-going support. I can see it now when my 3 Minis bite the dust and I transition to Windows that's when Apple will all of sudden introduce the machine I want.

... and when I see that new price tag - $4999.00 I don't envision spending that on a computer after owning a capable Mini.

Nooo - me thinks its time to stand-down from all this - take a break - go outside and reconnect with the mothership - when I return so much will be the same but will seem new and intriguing, for a minute I guess - until I realize this thread is still clocking because ...

"The new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming!"

As it doesn't run MacOS, and with that the apps I usually use, I can do without the hassle that would come with the NUC

A week with Windows 10 and you will be saying MacOS, what's that? I suspect for every app you are running on your Mini there will be a 'free' well thought out app in Windows 10. Example, I've ditched MS Office and use Libre Office instead. For the more than average user it's a superb well thought out 'free' alternative.

For someone that works in education you appear to have a very closed mind to anything new.

From MacRumors front page:

Ha! yet another money spinner for Apple with further cables and peripherals. The whole concept of Mac's was to keep everything neat and tidy not have your desk looking like a road map with cables and add-ons.

Which was relatively easy to do until post 2011 when they started sealing those babies up.

Maybe not, but older Minis run Linux extremely well. Instead of tossing a 2007 Mini out of the Windows 10 stories high, you could get another few years from it running something like Mandrake Linux.
