It's always been one of the selling points....you can easily get 5 years of productivity out of a Mac - that argument's moot for the current Mini being sold.
You get that from a 2010-2012 models by upgrading to an SSD and inserting 16GB max. The 2014 doesn't have that longevity as it's got glued memory and the SSD needs an expert to upgrade. Maybe it could be upgraded by a Best Buy Engineer - not sure.

After looking at the ifixit instructions it seems quite easy to replace the drive in the 2014 mini. Easier than removing the video card from my 2011 imac.

There's a special customer Apple engineering device needed to dislodge the logic board. Looked like expert level engineering work to me.

Best Buy doesn't have any Engineers. :p
The Geek Squad guys.

With the 2011 Mini being deemed obsolete this week, the writing's on the wall that our 2012's will be next year.

Apple's painting themselves into a corner with the 2014. How many years of use and OS upgrades should people expect?

Surely that's 5 years after it stopped becoming available - so the 2012 model goes obsolete sometime in October 2019? The current 2014 model Mini would be supported until December 2022 and counting.

But does that mean software as well as hardware? I suppose it does. There's very little going on here to obsolete the 2012 Mini - it's only the HD4000 graphics holding it back now.

I have fully opened a 2007 24" Aluminium iMac, and a 2012 Mini, to replace drives and do a general clean out. Rather open a Mini, it's a lot less fiddly than the iMac.

That HD4000 is the only thing I don't like about my 2012 Mini. Getting too outdated and pokey, not enough snap to it, and no 4K capacity.

I don't need a discrete GPU, just a current or even recent version of integrated GPU.

Honestly, what is Apple's damn problem? Just put an updated CPU, 8GB of RAM and a fusion drive into the current mini and call it a day. Most people would be happy with that machine for at least the next 3 years.

Exactly.

It's not difficult to update the internals of a machine. I mean... it will take some effort... but it's a normal amount of work. Apple has made 12 models of the Mac Mini over the years. It's obviously not an impossible task.

It's not a problem for other manufacturers to update their machines. Most do it EVERY YEAR.

We don't see threads on the Dell forum titled "Waiting for the next Inspiron laptop" because new machines pretty much get released like clockwork. There's no wondering when, or if, the next model is coming.

But since it's been 3 years since Apple made a minor update to the Mac Mini... and 5 years since the last major update... it might be dead, Jim. :p

Well, the change of a mini just increased, simply because Ivy can make one thinner than the current offering.

So we got that going for us, which is nice

Chances of a new Mac mini are thin to thinner with wireless port connections only. No dongles.....innovation to it thinnest.;) Revolutionary o_O
The next mini will have no dongles and no wires. Wireless video connections as well as using the wireless charging plate. It will be a piece of art that you place on your living room side table. The shape will be officially a cross between an obelisk and a tetrahedron. It's only function will be to drive the wireless monitor picture frame displaying art work purchased from the Apple Art Store.

Actually, it will be a completely closed system - nothing in, nothing out. Can't get any mini-er than that! And it will have the same form-factor as a Thin Mint (tm): the ThinMini!

I think we're all getting a bit punch-drunk.

I believe they use kilometers in Canada, not mileage. Just saying.

Yes, I haven't been there in years but yes we use kilometerage, that's our standard term. "Kilometerage may vary".

I just woke up from a dream, a vision if you will, of the next Mac Mini being available in gold. Double the options already.
