Actually, it will be a completely closed system - nothing in, nothing out. Can't get any mini-er than that! And it will have the same form-factor as a Thin Mint (tm): the ThinMini!

I think we're all getting a bit punch-drunk.
Thin Mints? Now this is starting to make sense. Finally. I'll take 3 boxes please!

Only the base model comes with 4 GB RAM, but it can be custom ordered with 8 or 16 GB RAM, and Fusion Drive.

I've seen you repeat this meme 500 times. What exactly is your point? Do these custom orders cost extra or are they given at no additional cost? If they are free, then you might have a point. If they cost hundreds of dollars extra, then what you typed is completely irrelevant. And I'm still waiting on the ability to custom order the 2014 mini with a 2017 CPU. Won't hold my breath on that one.

While Fusion Drive and SSD's bring snappy performance to those for whom that is important, the humble HDD remains a viable choice for those who are after cost effective storage.

The 5400 spinner is anything but a "viable choice" for consumers in 2018, especially paired with a farcical 4GB of RAM running a modern version of macOS. Anyone who says different is simply lying. That combination makes for an abysmal and unacceptable experience for users.

The current CPUs work with currently available MacOS and apps, and will no doubt continue to do so for some years to come. Updated CPU's that bring power consumption advantages to laptops, will provide only small advantages in other respects to a desktop.

The CPU in the 2014 mini can't even manage 4k @ 60hz. It is a dinosaur and a relic. It's embarrassing that Apple continues to sell a processor that is 5 generations old.

Here's another chap who has figured it out. Newer isn't necessarily better and while we dream about what the next Mini will look like, we will be underwhelmed by the successor and the 2012 will continue to hold it's value well into the 2020s. It's the Gold standard.

My point is that the RAM and storage you desire (original rant below) are already available as standard of the shelf, or as an option....

There is a range of CPU options, albeit not the most recent generation, but they work with the latest generation of MacOS, and will likely continue to do so for several more. The greatest benefit from more recent CPU's is lower power consumption, which is more relevant to a laptop than a desk-top computer.

Yes, it does cost more as you go up the range and tick higher option boxes, but that is normal for any product.

Honestly, what is Apple's damn problem? Just put an updated CPU, 8GB of RAM and a fusion drive into the current mini and call it a day. Most people would be happy with that machine for at least the next 3 years.

The is past the point of being bloody absurd. At the very least, upgrade the RAM to 8GB like they did with the MacBook Air. That they are selling a machine with 4GB in 2018 is unreal. If they won't update it, take it off the market. It is not a usable product.

As to the base model 1.4 Ghz Mac Mini with 4 GB RAM being unusable.... for some uses maybe so. For the day to day use of others it is adequate, as some have testified in this thread, and in the quote below from another thread.

Just for context I own 2 mac mini's a 2014 1.4Ghz with 4GB and a 2014 2.8Ghz with 8GB of RAM.
Performance between the 2 is pretty much the same.

1.4 works just fine in my opinion for the general computing needs of the masses - as long as you don't want extensive video editing or cryptocurrency mining...!

Anyway the point is moot.... the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming....... with updated CPU options, and the minimum of 8 GB RAM that all other Macs now have in base form. Storage, connectivity and ports will be in keeping with recent iMac offerings.

The base model will almost certainly be adequate for the average Joe or Jill, but remain an object of derision among low rent dilettantes with up-market pretensions.

I can see Apple’s new motto now - Think Barely Adequate

The crappy spec’d base Mini is maybe tolerable for HTPC with a 1080i TV. An actual every day driver for someone will yield frequent spinning beachballs and the browser taking up 2+gigs of ram after a days use.

But hey, those couple dozen people who could tolerate it, makes it perfectly acceptable for Apple to still sell it, right MD?

You can't reason with some people. The 2014 mini being sold AT ORIGINAL PRICE in 2018 is a farce. 4GB of RAM for a Mac in 2018 is a farce. A 5400 spinner in a Mac in 2018 is a farce. Full stop.

But... but... but... but nothing. It's a dreadful machine that was considered garbage on the day it was released. Now, it's past that point and it's just absurd.

The 2014 mini is still adequate in the same way the iPhone 3GS is still adequate. For even casual users (such as myself) it's complete junk.

What isn't moot is taking a post in another thread and adding a different context - that's just crazy pointless.
Moot is what apple may or may not do in future with any device including the Mac Mini, its just mindless speculation at best.

Moot, adjective - subject to debate, dispute, or uncertainty:

To the dismay, delight and disdain that this thread continues is a testament to the need, preference, allegiance and outrage that has been experienced by loyal customers. In the absence of meaningful information, announcements, confirmations, product support and products we are left with nothing except our dreams and lost hopes - falling prey to criticism, arguments or ridicule is simply all that's left.

Focus that angst at Apple not each other or better yet go out there and find a working alternative and share it - in the absence of that enjoy the fact we aren't alone.

No issues on SSD, but what about fusion drives?

Works great on Fusion Drives. I have two 2012 Mac mini Servers running this way, High Sierra and a DIY Fusion Drive (512GB SSD and 1TB stock HDD).

There were never any problems with HS and Fusion Drives. Only people mis-characterizing the facts that Fusion Drive isn't compatible with APFS.

But who reads anything completely through these days without jumping to conclusions.

Thank God someone else knows and speaks the truth. Thank you. We agree 10,000%.

An Apple II+ may have some uses still for some people, but that doesn't make it a sustainable product. I can tell you that when it was time to replace my 2010 Mac Mini in 2016, there's just no way I was willing to pay in 2016 for a 2014 spec'ed product that was already underpowered when it was released and I jumped ship to HP after having used Macs for 15 years. That you keep throwing around the adjective "humble" in nearly every post to justify Apple continuing to sell this overpriced underpowered embarrassment of a computer just shows that either you don't understand the needs of today's consumers, or you just blindly accept that whatever Apple sells must just be the best that can be.

Not crazy or pointless..... it illustrates a point; I thank you for that.

I don't thank you for the language lesson, with misses the point because you only quoted the first meaning of "moot" from the dictionary. Here is the second, which is the context in which I used it:

2 - having little or no practical relevance: the whole matter is becoming increasingly moot.
(Oxford Dictionary of British English)

Given that the new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming, rants about the currently available models (which do still fit the needs of some average folks, if not the desires of the average geek) are moot.

Apple is just being proactive. If they wait long enough people want old technology. Look at sales of records (LPs).
Also the Commodore 64 might be coming back - https://thec64.com/

For the mini it has only been 3 years since the 2014 was released. In 2035 you will appreciate the simplicity. 4GB or even 40GB will seem quaint.

Wondered how long it would take for you to start calling us patronising names again.

Except in the UK it's not. It's 20% more expensive than last year, apparently due to 'Brexit' (which hasn't happened yet, won't for many years at least and possibly never will).
