The Mini may have dodged a bullet. Now that the iCashCow line is in trouble and Apple's doing an All-Hands-On-Deck scramble to make the trouble go away anything not having to do with iPhone is not only on a back burner, it's completely off the stovetop.

Speaking of timing, the five-year anniversary of this thread is coming up quickly (7 Dec). I still think we should end the thread on that date with a final post by the OP.

I concur 100%.

This will be my last post to this thread, hoping we can do the right thing and let GabrieleR do the mike-drop tomorrow. It has been a great ride, lots of good provoking thoughts and LOTS of healthy venting. I'd like to think that the angst and annoyance posted in this one thread had something to do with the Mini staying alive, but knowing Apple that's probably a stretch. Anyway, thanks for all the fish.

I fail to see why that is the "right thing" to do. But since that was your last post, I guess somebody else will have to explain. ;)
It is the right thing to do in the same way that it was "right" to end Happy Days. This thread is dangerously close to "Jumping the Shark". Let's show the respect this thread is due and close it. And honor the OP.

A cameo here from the OP a few weeks ago....
Told you so.

Dunno if she is going to pop up on the anniversary of the thread she started.... if so it would be only her eleventh post on MacRumors since she joined in 2009!

I don't...... This thread still has plenty of life left in it.

"This aren't the minis you're looking for."

True..... The Mac Mini Pro has come to the delight of vociferous pundits and dilettantes, grunt seeking geeks with deep pockets, as well as vlog creators and pros with the budget and real need to benefit from all that multicore power in a small package.

However the average Joe or Jill after MacOS on their desk, modestly but adequately specced for relatively low level day to day needs, at a reasonable price has been left out in the cold by the 2018 incarnation.......

As a teacher (on a modest salary) I make good use of Pages, Numbers, iTunes, Dictionary, Safari, and occasionally Keynote and Photos, in addition to apps that come with some of the textbooks I use. As an amateur photographer occasionally providing content for the sports pages of the local newspaper and websites Photos and Safari are more than adequate. As an expat, social media helps me keep in touch with friends and family.

None of the above are particularly demanding..... The 2018 Mac Mini (pro) in its base form is way over priced and overpowered, yet has woefully inadequate storage for the general needs of regular folks. Is there a more modestly specced and priced Mac Mini (not pro) in the offing?

Just get the base i3 version. Use the internal as a macOS boot drive and place your home folder on any kind of small external you care to choose. Anything from cheap as chips HHD spinners, to USB SATA SSDs, to high spec TB3 NVME enclosures. The 2018 mini is perfect and extremely adaptable in this respect. The i3 will last a modest user easily 5+ years, just like the 2011 and 2012 models did.

Come on folks, where else are you going to go to be called things such as
vociferous pundits and dilettantes, grunt seeking geeks with deep pockets,
? That alone makes this thread unreplacable.

The new Mac mini for grunt seeking geeks, dilettantes, and the average Joe and Jill is almost certainly coming.

I gotta new religion – Keeping My 2012 Mini Running For Another Two Years Until The Ascension Of The 2020 Mini Update.

Don't need this broken old-time religion you poor ignorant Almost Certainlyists still practice.

I have evolved beyond mere primitive superstition to a higher superposition of enlightened techno-spirit.

May the Qubit be with you all, in the name of Our Lord Steve. :p

;)

OK, this is my last post in this venerable thread. I just finished getting my new 2018 mini set up and very happy with it. It finally arrived. Retiring the refurb 2014 stand-in I got to bridge the gap. Over and out.

Well you might also argue that Happy Days never should have existed in the first place, it turned a brilliant film into an dumb sitcom. Sort of like what Apple did with the 2014 Mini. :D
You are right. American Graffiti is certainly in my top 3 movies of all time. I have signed 8x10 black and white photos of the drag race scene signed by Paul LeMatt, "Milnor". And yet Happy Days managed to succeed in spite of itself. Much like humans in general. But good things do not last forwever. And Fonzi jumping over a shark on water skiis, well, ouch! ANd yet even from that scene that never should have existed, we at least got the phrase "Jumped the Shark" :)

And yes, the 2014 mini was a mess :)

Time to wrap this thread up in a bow for posterity, honor it. And start a new one.

Me, I am still hoping for American Graffetti 2 :)

Aside: Pine Barrens was arguably the best Soprano episode ever.

I never watched the Sopranos, but I know that episode was filmed in New York, nowhere near the NJ Pine Barrens. According to the wikipedia page, they originally wanted to film it at a state park in Essex County, NJ and were denied permission. But the funny thing is... Essex County is nowhere near the Pine Barrens either. ;)
