Is there a new Mac mini?
If the 2018 update sells well enough, there will be. But I highly doubt sales will sufficient to warrant a yearly upgrade cycle; rather I’d bet on 2-3 years between refreshes so check back in 2020/2021.

And with two weeks lapsing before you resurrected it, this thread is all but dead.

Edit: Just realized OP is being serious; I wrongly (but understandably I think, based on this thread’s history!) assumed sarcasm.

So yes, after four long years Apple finally updated the Mac Mini last October, 2018.

Gone are the lower-end configurations (i.e. 4GB RAM, HDD and Fusion drive options) whose mere existence so enraged some posters to this thread. The base model is now a 8GB/128GB SSD configuration, and at $799 is $50 higher than the 2014 model of the same config.

But that $50 buys a lot compared to the 2014 model, including:

—a 3.6GHz 65W desktop-class 8th generation quad core CPU vs. a 1.4GHz 15W mobile 4th gen dual core;

—user-replaceable, socketed RAM that maxes out at 64 GB vs. a max of 16GB of soldered RAM

—four Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports vs. two Thunderbolt 2

There are other upgrades like Bluetooth 5.0, USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps) and HDMI 2.0. Also, the mini now has Apple’s T2 chip. A 10Gbps Ethernet port is available for an additional $100 and a six-core i5 CPU is $300 extra, or $500 for a faster, hyperthreaded i7. Note the 2018 model does away with the SDXC slot, the IR sensor, user-upgradable internal storage and analog/digital sound in/out (though the headphone jack remains).

Edit: Just realized OP is being serious;

I find that really hard to believe. The 2018 mini is hardly a secret, it was on the homepage at apple.com for awhile, it's available at virtually every store that sells Macs and has been widely reviewed/discussed. A simple google search would easily answer that question with the first hit. No need to dig up this old thread.

More ideas for the next Mac mini that is almost certainly coming: https://www.anandtech.com/show/13885/the-true-shortest-am4-motherboard-thinitx-comes-to-amd

Look at OP’s post history... joined last June to ask virtually the same question.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I needed to test my egpu with a mac that has tb3. My neighbor offered her macbook for testing the egpu. I explaned that I had an old mac mini and would like to use this egpu with that, before I buy a new mac mini. Answer was "Okay, but what's a mac mini?"
I had to dig it up from apple's website with her macbook. "Never seen that kind of mac before, how do you use it, if it doesn't have a screen?"
And she is a video pro...

Just went to Apple store yesterday. The sales clerk couldn’t understand that I bought a new mac mini. She thought I had an old one. She was telling me how they weren’t great and that they rarely sell them. She was a little shocked that people still have issues with interference on the 2018s. It’s sad that the sales people think so little of a great little machine.

The new Mac Mini is almost certainly coming...... Thus almost certainly need to cultivate this eternal thread.

Not at all. Unless it sells significantly better than the 2014 model, this may very well be the last refresh.

I guess we’ll find out in 2-3 (or 4-5?) years if there is still enough of a market to support the mini. If not, the mini will go the way if the 17” MacBook Pro.

The naysayers have constantly been shown to be wrong on this thread. Even a few months before the 2018 was announced last year there were a core of wise folks on here who proclaimed the Mini would certainly be coming. Some of us weak of soul were broken by our disbelief and were shown to be wrong, as the 2018 Mini certainly did come, just as the next Mini almost certainly will be coming.

For my desktop usage, unless it turns out to be a problem child my 2018 should work for me for years. It is primarily my tax computer, photo storage, and music computer. The disk hogs are too expensive to keep on a laptop. (buy a 2TB MBP just so I can keep copies with me?).

The only downside of the external storage for my home directory is moving some things around the other day I somehow disconnected my external SSD drive with my home disk. So, unplanned power down.

I suspect just by how long this refresh took it will sell well. Could it be the last? Perhaps, depends on how the new Mac Pro looks.

I mean if it's as modular as the rumours suggest and the base model is priced reasonably, by that I mean in the area of say $1.5k for a basically **** spec but all the glory of everything being upgradeable then yeah.

Likely of course it will start far higher, $2k+ and still have a **** spec. But maybe, just maybe they will ease off on the price a little given recent events. Stranger things have happened.

Modular? Just means you can plug in a egpu, external hard drive etc.

I’m planning on keeping my mini for a good 5 years.

A modular Mac Pro with expansion via external peripherals seems like it would be very close to what the mini already is.
All it would really bring is Xeon CPUs (in pairs?) and the potential for more RAM slots (>256GB? ECC).

If it includes an onboard and upgradeable GPU, then that requires a much bigger case, and would save the $300-500 that is being spent on an eGPU case and TB cabling. Meaning Apple will justify $500 being added onto the MacPro price, relative to the mini, just for providing a PCIe slots.

So given that Xeons are also more expensive, I predict a slightly larger case (not big enough for HDDs) and base Pricing for single Xeon 8 core, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Vega-level GPU: >$4000. I.e. More or less iMac Pro without a $1000 display included. Well out of my price range!

I don't know if this is semi-tongue-in-cheek or not but all this talk of keeping the faith in Apple shows there really is a cult of Mac!

I can see Apple calling it the Mini Magic Keyboard too...that's the scary part.

So bummed I cannot use my 2013 as a monitor for a 2018 Mac Mini (of course it's not backwards compatible with thunderbolt, only thunderbolt 2).
If I'm understanding correctly Thunderbolt displays should be compatible with the Mini with a Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207266

"Use the Thunderbolt port of this adapter to connect your Mac to a display that uses a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 cable. For example, you can use this adapter to connect your Mac to an Apple Thunderbolt Display or LG Thunderbolt 2 display."

The 2018 Mac Mini has yet to make it to shops where I'm at...... and the 2014 models are still on display, with pre-update pricing.

The 2018 range is great for pros and enthusiastic
amateurs doing video editing and other creative activities in a somewhat transportable form, as well as wannabes after performance whether they need it for not.

For the average Joe or Jill wanting MacOS on their desk to do more mundane tasks, with a reasonable amount of on-board storage, the 2018 Mac Mini offers way more
performance than many folks need, at at a base price many will likely baulk at paying....... More storage? Dig deeper still into your pockets.

Methinks the 2018 Mac Mini has focused on a vociferous niche, and neglects its traditional base.

How well did the 2014 Mac Mini sell?

I, for one, would have bought a 2014 model (mid range, off the shelf at the local dealer) if my 2009 model failed catastrophically, or became inadequate for my needs. Might even still do so.

How well will the 2018 Mac Mini sell?

In base form the 2018 iteration is already priced higher than I feel is reasonable. Specced with a decent amount of on-board memory it would be way beyond my budget.

For my desktop usage, unless it turns out to be a problem child my 2018 should work for me for years. It is primarily my tax computer, photo storage, and music computer. The disk hogs are too expensive to keep on a laptop. (buy a 2TB MBP just so I can keep copies with me?).

Tax, photos, music..... On board storage would seem to be more of a priority than the multi cored performance.

Not well enough to make it worth updating until four years later.

Hopefully much better now that Apple’s targeting higher-end users instead of entry-level “switchers”. Otherwise, the 2018 update may very well be the mini's swan song, and it will go the way of the 17” MacBook Pro.

Mickey Do, I think you’re aware that you’re in the distinct minority concerning the adequacy of the 2014’s computing performance. If a 10-year old mini meets your current needs, you won’t need the 2018 mini until sometime in the 2030s. I’d submit that your requirements are the niche, and most 2018 mini buyers are happy to have that level of performance. After all, it’s only $50 more than that same config (8GB RAM/128GB SSD) was in the 2014 lineup—and it’s a much higher performing machine.

A 2014 mini, new or used, would seem to be the perfect upgrade for you, and there’s no reason to think you wouldn’t get as long a service life from it as you’ve gotten from your 2009.

Good.
Do not let this thread dye until we get some vega inside mini.
2018 is reasonable machine with enough options but without real GPU inside this size form it's pointless.
