I agree that the ARM transition holds a lot of promise. I just wouldn't want a first generation model for my own needs. Just bought a new maxxed-out Mini (a minMax!) from the refurb store on Friday, knowing that it will support the software I need and can also run Windows.

But aside from some posts here, I haven't seen anyone predicting an ARM Mini right away, the predictions call for a laptop.

Given the story in the main news thread, would people feel a bit miffed now if there wasn't an ARM Mini?
Why so?

There will be an ARM Mini. Perhaps (most certainly) not tomorrow, but honestly that wasn't even a thing before the latest news.

Tomorrow? When did they ever talk about the Mac mini at a keynote? I expect the current model from 2018 to be the current model for at least another two years.
I referred to the ARM transition per se, but nevertheless:

Mac Mini 2018 was featured in the keynote - not WWDC, but the October event.

True, but it’s unusual for it to be discussed. Desktops are a niche these days. I suspect they sell a lot more iMacs than they do Mac mini’s. Still happy with mine and I have no interest in upgrading in the next few years.

I do love mine, too. Same as yours, but only 512 GB SSD. I only wish the iGPU had a bit more grunt sometimes …

A really key piece will be when the transition to ARM processors in Apple products is complete is how long will they continue backwards support for Intel CPUs in the OS.

It drives my pair of 4K monitors. That’s all I really need it to do. PS can sometimes lag a tiny bit, but I mostly work in LR.
Bummer - I also use mine with dual DCI 4K screens. At 4096 x 2160 with 10 bit colour each I do have slight hiccups under certain circumstances.

Good thing the recent $6000+ Mac Pro tower is Intel Skylake variant CPU + T2 chip, since in theory the other Macs with those same attributes can come along for the ride as long as the OS supports that tower, which is likely for a rather long time.

IIRC, Apple supported the PowerPC for about 3 years after switching to Intel CPUs. It will be interesting to see how long they do this time.

We will see when Microsoft releases an ARM-native Office (and maybe Adobe has at least some of their products ready).

I'd say the timeline is at least partly dictated by these big developers. There's hardly a point in releasing hardware when it doesn't run MS Office nor Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop.

I had been hoping the rumours of a transition to ARM were wrong.

I've been waiting for the next Intel Mini (not just a spec bump), but it seems that's unlikely to ever come now. So I will probably get some of the current model.

I don't think I'm ready to switch to ARM, plus I find the ability to run Windows VMs invaluable. Even if it does somehow work I don't expect trying to run x86_64 Windows in a VM on an ARM Mac to work very well.

Also currently using Bootcamp on some old iMacs. Will now need to decide whether to replace those with newer iMacs soon or not.

Microsoft has ported Office to the ARM architecture for both the Surface family and the iPad and iPhone, so the foundation is already there for a Mac version that they can then tweak to look like the current x86 Office 365 version.

Did you watch the keynote? MS Office, Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop were all demoed running on the ARM Mac.
