This is why I think Apple may just skip this year.

You mean that a computer company doesn't release any new model between October 2016 and at least October 2017 (no iMac, no Mac Mini or Pro, no Macbook, Air or Pro). That would be a joke.

its ok,since x86 cpu ram are not improving from one year to one year so great anymore. Only ssd and gpu.
Its ok in october to have new mac mini imac and macbook pro/macbooks

the bigger jump with Kaby is the upgrade to 615 internal graphics processor.

This is not only true for the MacBook, but it has been true with my general experiences with Macs for years.

The first component I always feel is requiring me to make an upgrade? The GPU.

Whether it was the GMA 950 in some of the earliest Intel macs, my 2010 MBP, or my current 2015 MBP, the GPU is always the lowest common denominator for me.

at this point of time, i hope Apple will NOT upgrade the Macbook with kabylake and wait until October to go straight to coffelake to have that TB3 native and probably even a greater battery life
This is a likely scenario if Apple really wants to add "many" new features. TB3, latest processor, better handling of graphics, and longer battery life.

maybe they felt that Kaby lake wasn't enough of a perfomance increased to warrant a bump... they did skip Broadwell with the MBP's so its not unprecedented.

I feel that Broadwell was a smaller update to Haswell than Kaby Lake is to Skylake.

Is Coffeelake going to be out by then? We still have to get Cannonlake first.

I don't think Apple would release the Macbook alongside the updated MBP in October. They'd wanna keep sales separate for awhile, I would assume.

No way was broadwell a smaller update.

You got your sentence backwards... broadwell was a bigger update to haswell than kaby was to sky

Besides, it doesn't really matter for most consumers. All four of those chipsets open safari up just as fast

One of the biggest improvements with Kaby Lake is the 10bit H.265 hardware encoding/decoding support.
Streaming in H.265 could become quite important in the next one or two years. Especially without a dGPU, it makes a huge difference.

That's more minor than a node shrink

I don't doubt that H.265 will become more ubiquitous down the road, but in the modern CPU world moving to a smaller node is a more significant achievement especially when it was 14nm

What are the chances of 2 x USB-C ports on the new MB? Do you think this is likely or very slim? That's the only thing holding me back from buying the current gen model.

Thanks

yes, but instead of releasing the 12" macbook this month with kaby lake and wait for another 1-2 years for next update,i think we all prefer to wait until October for coffelake to take advantage of the H.265 10bit, but also of the tb3 native technology

if you look at the way the SoC is placed and all the I/O, and consider what they'd need to change space wise, I think its very unlikely...they'll more likely keep the same design with the single port. If they're going to change anything it will be the possible inclusion of the second gen butterfly keyboard from the Pro's last year, but even that is not a certain thing or something I would bet on. Something you can bet on will be Thunderbolt 3 support

At this point the best reason to wait is because there will likely be a spec bump within these next few months.

I don't know where you get the idea that it is glitchy and gimmicky...

If you NEED as your post suggest buy now, otherwise it is a case of want, then wait (but don't expect ANY product to be glich free)!
glitchy or not the new MBP is truly a disappointing, undesirable laptop with a ridiculous price tag,I really don't remember any Apple laptop being so underwhelming and undesirable.
I'm a MBP user myself, but I refuse to upgrade to the new MBP even if it's heavily discounted.it's just not a great product and that's it.
I will replace my MBP to 12 Inch MacBook when the new model is out.
definitely no interest in new MBP.

What is so repulsive about the new MBP? I am seriously asking because I've heard so many people bash it not just you. Putting aside the fact that it's overpriced and the gimmicky touchbar which you are not obligated to use... is there a performance issue with them?

I am asking because lately I've been tempted to buy one rather than wait for the rMB, but hearing so many people speak so badly about it has definitely given me pause.

I felt the same, and I still feel it is a little overpriced, but after upgrading, man I was wrong.

Yes they should shave 200$ but the computer is AMAZING, I would dare saying the best upgrade I have ever done, the touch bar is good (not great but good enough ) the computer is super zippy, the screen oh boy that is stunning, the audio is something impressive, I mean really I still ave to find a fault.(apart the price).

Personally I feel it was completely misleading that they promoted the event with "Hello again". It set expectations really high, as the "Hello" part was used to introduce the Macintosh, and the iMac. In the end, it was an all iOS event, and the only major new Mac related thing, was a touch bar. Really? It really portrais Cooks Apple as having no clue what the companys legacy is about.

The MBP is fine, albeit overpriced. But given that they decided to go all TB on the machine again tells me that Cooks Apple has no clue what their costumers want.

Not forgetting Apple is at least 6 months behind the latest chip update, so if Intel launches the new chipset in October, it's very unlikely we'd see it immediately within a MacBook!

I think the MacBook will be updated along with the new iMac's and MacBook Pro's at an event in October. New iPhone's and iPad Pro's in September along with the new Apple Watch.

As far as I know, the Cannon Lake architecture will only feature native USB 3.1. Also there is no real need in native TB3. Connection the TB3 interface directly with PCIe gives good performance. The next rally cool feature would be PCIe 4.0 or something like TB4 with PCIe 3.0 x8 support to get eGPU running at maximum speed. Also native eGPU-Support in macOS 10.13 would be really nice.

Would love to see a Kaby Lake MBP with GTX 10-series eGPU replacing a Desktop-PC.

For what would you need TB3 on a normal Macbook? May people won't use TB3 on their MacBook Pro, so what use case would TB3 have on a Macbook? For a Macbook a second USB-C Port and maybe USB 3.1 with 10gbps support would be enough IMO.
Not sure if you can expect a Macbook running dual 4k displays... Just buy a Pro if you want this :D.

Current MacBook already supports USB 3.1. It's just a name change from 3.0.

What's TB3 good for? External GPU. Plus you can finally use hubs that will allow simultaneous output to 4K display and USB 3.0 speed at the same time.

Currently, if you connect any 4K display to the single USB-C port in the MacBook, you will be limited to USB 2.0 speed as some of the bandwidth of the port is taken up by DisplayPort protocol. Thunderbolt 3 won't run into that limitation.

I hope they are coming soon. Have been waiting since December. Need to retire my 2012 MBA.

The Retina Macbook should be going to Kaby Lake next now that the chips are launched. Here's what I think could change:

1. Second generation keyboards (in the style of the 2016 Macbook Pro).
2. Possibility that Kaby Lake could allow introduction of a couple of Thunderbolt 3 ports rather than just 1 USB-C.
3. More tenuous possibility of 16Gb RAM option but it's possible that the 8Gb limit is there to maximise power management just like the 16Gb limit on Macbook Pro 2016 models.
4. Better GPU would probably be a must for this sort of machine. Could a DCI-P3 screen make an appearance?
5. 720p front webcam a glaring miss compared with other Apple hardware (over existing 480p).
6. Terraced battery improvement meant for the Macbook Pro 2016 may make an appearance as an upgrade to the existing design which wasn't used in those machines for some reason. Improving battery capacity would probably be the key to updates to this machine.

I don't think the emergence of Thunderbolt 3 would be a reason for doing a presentation, and Intel may give discounts on the existing Skylake CPUs to allow a price cut.

The next possible release date would be the day after the Quarterly results call on Tuesday. It's also possible that there could be an event just prior to WWDC or shortly afterwards. To delay much longer than a year in the current climate is a bit risky
