Well, I like Apple's attempt to finally force USB-C across all accessories because everyone else will benefit from faster adoption, but I'd hate to be a rMBP user for the next 2-3 years during the transition phase.

Think about being able to use USB-C flash drives or simple accessories with any Android phone, Win/OS X laptop or tablet (iOS excluded).

As far as HDMI goes, I couldn't care less. Proper screens use DisplayPort, and I'd gladly trade my HDMI port for another Thunderbolt (And in case of Thunderbolt 3, it's literally the most robust port out there). And you still need a VGA adapter to hook your laptop to any projector from the stone age.

SD card exclusion is annoying for me as a photographer with SD-equipped camera, but I wouldn't bat an eye if I had XQD or CF as my main storage because I don't use it for anything else.

What is of much higher importance is whether the new cooling system is actually better than the old one?

Microsoft is calling...

See, Apple can do stuff like this in the mobile industry. They don't have as much of an influence in the computers if they are behind companies like Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Less PC users are willing to adopt to their subtractions.

Yeah, I agree. But android phones are extremely competitive and in many aspect are on par or better than iPhones. When it comes to laptops, Apple rMBP is still ahead for several significant reasons:

1. An array of TB2/TB3 ports gives rMBP unmatched external display support
2. Best performance / battery life / weight compromise
3. Best trackpad by far
4. Multitasking gestures and spaces make multi-screen setups very efficient
5. Still one of the best quality screen
6. OS X is an advantage alone for many users

The loss of magsafe is not a big deal for me because I don't use the laptop while plugged in. With 8-10 hour battery life, I charge it at night and during lunchtime or other breaks. I'm a development contractor and use my machine heavily every day and even though my current MBP is 3 years old, it still holds a good charge (currently reading 26% and predicting 1h40m duration). When charging, the charge cable is well out of the way of anyone who might trip over it so there is no need for magsafe.

A bigger concern is the combination of Apple price increase and UK Brexit effect. It has basically added £1000 to the 15" BTO that I want for 3 years ago. That increase is certainly giving me pause...

Out of interest, does anyone know the UK higher education prices for the new machines? I've got 3 students in the household but I'll need to get one of them to log in to unidays for me.

And the whole idea of the magsafe is not destroying your $3000 laptop.
I don't think your laptop is going to be destroyed just because it doesn't have MagSafe. Most notebooks don't have magnetic power connectors, and they've been perfectly fine for doing so. Yes, I agree that MagSafe was very innovative, and I would have liked to see Apple someone implement it with the USB-C connector. But I have never found it to benefit me, and it certainly shouldn't be a deal breaker.

I am in Canada and the top end 15" is now $3499.... For years I have been regularly updating my MBP selling on my old one and paying a bit more for the new model, the price point remained relatively consistant. Don't quote me on this but I think I am now paying $600 more for the top tier 15" than the previous model was being sold at earlier today.

the Touchbar looks neat, move to usb c is fine also, if you forget the fact I would need to spend hundreds more for adapters. On the whole I think its a nice update... However;

Dropping the magsafe is a truly dumb move.... like beyond retarded to a whole new level of mental ineptitude. God knows how many times my kids have snuck into my office almost tripped on my MBP power cord and I have thanked Apple for Magsafe because the power cord pops out my kids don't faceplate and my very expensive laptop doesn't faceplate either.

Phil might present the new MBP as the evolution and pinnacle of the laptop and apart from dropping the magsafe they are all nice improvements but nothing screams "gotta have it" to me and especially when I am paying so much more.

It's a shame

It's AU$4,249 in Australia!!! And to think a couple of years ago the Aussie dollar was worth *more* than the $US.

I thInk Apple has priced me out of the market. I'm still really happy with my late-2013 Haswell MBP 15 top-of-the-range which I bought as a refurb for AU$2500.

OP, you forgot one. Apple went with DDR3 instead of DDR4 across the new lineup, even the high-end 15" model. Used to be that with Apple you paid more, but got top of the line hardware. I guess not now.

Funnily enough, they just dropped student discount to 10%, from 14%. If you wait until back to school goes on you can have some crappy Beats cans you can sell for circa £200.

For your convenience, that works out to:

£2115 for base spec
£2430 for top sepc

15", which is what I assume you're interested in.

But most of the functions need an adaptor, which is very inconvenience for a laptop computer.

Now, with this new MBP, not even able to read the most ordinary USB drive without any adaptor, unable to connect to any HDMI device without adaptor for presentation, and unable to connect to most home monitor that using display port without adaptor.....

There is a single adapter for all of this, you know.

Hahahahahahaha, it's:

A) an Apple cable, so it's going to die pretty damn soon
B) £69!!!!!!!! That represents a 4% price hike on a new laptop to perform reasonable functions it's older brother could perform

because its so easy to trip over the cord and not having that 3,000 dollar laptop fall to its death

Yep, but we do have emojis now
Just tripped over my mac charging cable. *sad face* *sad face* *angry face* *angry face* Now I'm *crying face* *crying face*, and I feel like a *monkey face*. Even *cat face grinning* doesn't make me feel better. Life is in shambles now. Typing this on my ruined 2016 MBP with Touch ID and Touchbar. *sad face* *sad face* At least emojis still work!! *happy face* *happy face* *laughing with tears face* *laughing with tears face* I feel like a boss. *sunglasses smiley face*

Apple has offered a USB-C to Lightning cable for quite a while:

http://www.apple.com/shop/product/MK0X2AM/A/usb-c-to-lightning-cable-1-m?fnode=97
There are two arguments:

1) For a person spending $1800+ on a macbook pro and $800+ on an iPhone (or whatever the price is), a $25 cable is pennies.

2) It's a ****ing cable that costs $0.05 to make. Include it with the device Apple.

Both are right, but $25 for a short cable ... that's crazy.

Thats why there is a bunch of false drives with double connectors on the market ;)

5. Still one of the best quality screen

With todays update, maybe even the best. Are there many laptops with wide gamut displays out there?

My Apple branded adaptors are still going strong after 2-3 years. And there are cheaper third party options as well.

This may sounds super silly but I personally like the glowing apple logo on the old MacBook, classic Apple. I don't need a "touch bar"... I also like the mag safe connector

Ok, everyone is screaming bloody murder. What else is new.

I've got to pause and ask what's going on here. Nothing new is what. They make the best gear they can think of and they charge you a friggin fortune. A bitter pill fortune.

Put up or shut up? :D

The magsafe was one of the best features on a laptop ever.

I destroyed every other laptop by tripping over the cord.

That :apple: thinks we're going back a decade to before this invention is unbelievable.

With "flexibility" you mean dongles.

My so many laptops have never been destroyed by tripping over the cord.

Think about this, you can no longer connect Apple's top of the line phone to their top of the line laptop without an adapter. You can't use the headphones from your new phone with your new laptop.
On the first part you're incorrect. Apple sell a lightning to USB-C cable for the same price as a lightning to USB standard cable. Do your homework. Also I doubt a 'Pro' would be using crappy free-in-the-box EarPods.
