I just like how the poll makes it sound like what's holding these things back are Apple not hiring more people and just doing it. They have mass amounts of money and no debt, they can pretty much do what they want to. If they wanted to hire 150 more people to work on the phones tomorrow they'd get it done, but that's not the hold up. While some of your list has some...possibilities, most aren't things Apple is just going to throw in the phone because it looks cool or is popular. Look at how long it took them to add copy and paste to the phone. when they do something new they'll do it well, not just jump on the bandwagon.

Most of the software features in the opening post CAN be implemented well, even on current technology. And if done well, they would certainly make the iPhone an even better phone than it already is.

Apple goes out of it's way to ensure that new features are implemented as well as they could possibly be. This requires numerous programmers trying to implement them using a varity of methods, and numerous testers trying out these different methods to figure out which one is the most intuitive and free of bugs.

If it took two years for Apple to figure out a way to pull off copy and paste that is intuitive, perhaps they DO need to employ more programmers and testers. The limitation certainly isn't the hardware, that wasn't the reason why copy and paste took two years. It was because Apple didn't have enough programmers and testers to figure what is the absolute best way to implement copy and pastefaster.

Edit: I actually think a mod should sticky this thread. This same topic gets made over and over again, but this one is more comprehensive than all the others. Having just one official stickied thread that lists everything that people want to see makes a lot of sense.

Would very much like night vision added to the video camera :)

Good suggestion, I don't know how I missed something so far back, but I added it. Tech wise, I think this could be done entirely at the software level.

I really think this topic should just be a sticky and maybe it will reduce the number of people making new speculation/wishlist threads about the next iPhone each day.

This list was clearly made with input from numerous posters, it's very through and there isn't a single bolded thing in the OP that I see that is actually unreasonable or implausible. Every single thing in bold in the OP, I could see showing up in a future iPhone.

Which do you see as more important/agree with more?

The stuff on the hardware wishlist, or the stuff on the software wishlist?

What if the iPhone became more VoIP or skype replacing phone friendly? Like you can replace the phone with (and have you logged in auto and always, without having it in multitasking) skype. or integrating skype/google voice into the phone app?
Or have you auto logged into other things, like aim, facebook and others for chat or whatever
Just a thought

For the love of smurfberries, no physical keyboard.

I'll take a large screen in the same size device. Don't want it getting any bigger.

Even more "indestructible" glass. Would love to go caseless.

Bump in performance specs.

Codecs.

Finer controls of the cameras

Bump in camera specs

Wireless syncing

Gotta fix youtube

Bottom line: You're holding one of the most amazing pieces of tech in the world right now. Theres no way around it. Cliche as it sounds but the world, not to mention your life, is different because of the iphone. That's a gigantic platform to stand on.

The piss and moaners who see every revision for it's perceived "lack" of features are category 1 douche bags.

I think the iPhone 5 should be able to record:
1080p @ 30fps;
1080i @ 120fps;
720p @ 500fps.

So that it can replay back in slow motion. - I am joking (720p @ 500fps, on a phone?!?!?); 720p @ 120fps, should be possible. A 4-5 year old phone can shoot QVGA @ 120fps.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard, it was just much, much lower on their list of things to include. Again, just throwing more devs and money at the phone isn't necessarily going to make it better.

Based on all the current rumors, it seems like every single hardware thing in the opening post of this thread is about to come true in the next iPhone. This current rumor that we're getting a four inch iPhone now is AWESOME.

This!

I would kill for that design. An iPhone 5 with a 4" screen and the same size, and an iPhone Mini with a 3.5" screen and a smaller size than the current phone.

Is it a coincidence that the front page story on macrumors about the 4" screen reused the exact same picture from the opening post of this thread?

And also that the frontpage story about one of the iPhone prototypes having a keyboard reusing the same image from the opening post of this thread? That seems unlikely.

Great point on the codecs. I know it goes against Apple's strategy but it's just annoying.
Also I'd like to see the phone start to automatically resend texts when a connection is established. I'd like to get some way to color code certain people in SMS to help me not accidentally text the wrong person or some other method of differentiation.

Well, Valentine's Day, I meant to text my friend something like... "Come out to the driveway, I'm right outside waiting for you" But I accidently texted it some girl that I dated and haven't seen in 3+ years. That probably creeped her the hell out. :apple:

So color coding would be neat. Coding all your contacts from work in red, all of your family in blue, your friends in green, old obscure people that you never keep in touch with in yellow, something like that? It still sounds like too much of a hassle for too little benefit for most people to actually use though.

Resending texts would be really neat. What codecs are we talking about? There's dozens of them. Do you mean just divx and xvid, or are there any other major ones that I'm unfamiliar with?

P.S: The iControlpad is out! Is anyone else getting it?

I'm surprised at how many of the technology upgrades from this wishlist came true for the iPad...

Front Facing Camera

Dual Core Cortex A9 CPU + Dual Core SGX543 GPU (rebranded the A5)

LPDDR2 RAM

Output iPad to HDTVs/Apple TV scaled or downconverted to display at 1080p either OTA/Wirelessly or via a mini-HDMI port or a Dock Connector to VGA adapter

Rear Camera

Turned out to be a much bigger upgrade than I ever anticipated from Apple.

The LPDDR2 RAM (much faster than the LPDDR1 ram every device under the sun currently uses) is particularly surprising.

My thoughts

Camera housing:

I really hope that they make the next iPhone's rear camera recessed slightly. Going caseless isn't an option for me, since the camera's anti-reflective glass (the coating of which is easy to scratch) is flush with the back, making scratches from sliding around on surfaces a serious risk.

I saw an image of an iPhone 4 that had been used extensively with no case and its lens was so scratched that pictures were blurry. An extreme case, yes, but a real possibility over time.

Display:

I'd also like the display to stay as it is. I seriously doubt they'll increase the size, because that would either mean a lower ppi or a higher resolution. The ppi would be below Apple's magic 300 number, taking away the whole 'Retina Display' idea. Increasing the size whilst keeping the ppi level would mean that developers would have to deal with another resolution. That's definitely not going to happen and would be a pain in the butt for devs.

Rather than keeping the same size body and increasing the display size, I'd rather keep the display and make the phone smaller. That seems like a more likely move. It's unlikely that Apple will follow the Android obsession with increasingly larger displays (and therefore phones, in most cases).

Software:

Most of the suggestions put forward here are decent. The only thing that really stands out as needing an overhaul, however, is the notifications system. When I had a Galaxy S i9000 for a while, I really grew to love Android's way of handling notifications. The overall experience with the OS and the phone wasn't nearly as polished as the one I get with my iPhone, though.

I'd like to see the next iPhone have the same beveled back that the iPad 2 has. Very classy. The iPhone 4 just looks like it's not finished or someone left the real case off.

I want my iPhone to be able to cook me breakfast in the morning. And make me sammiches all day long.

What!!

I love the iPhone 4's back. It looks incredible. Like a candy bar filled with awesome.

The decision to buy an iphone 5 comes down to whether or not it has a bigger screen.

Good suggestion, I don't know how I missed something so far back, but I added it. Tech wise, I think this could be done entirely at the software level.

What are you smoking? Night vision requires very specific hardware. You can't just take a black nighttime image from a cell phone camera and magically get software to see things that are otherwise completely invisible. At the very least it requires an infrared LED illuminator and an IR sensitive camera.

Heres an idea:

The iPhone 5 has a magnetic back.. Apple releases the iPhone 5 and an attatchment as an accessory, this accessory is a sliding keyboard, the same size as the iPhone 5 but only 2mm thin and can magnetically attatch onto the back of the iPhone.

BAM, insta-amazing sliding keyboard for the croud that wants it without risking the original keyboard-less design we all love.

All while keeping the iPhones slimness and not adding any bulk to the outer rim like other keyboard cases have to do to attatch properly.

Make the app icons BIGGER if they plan to make the screen bigger. Those little icons on iPads look horrible. It is like you bought a bigger TV but the show is displayed in a small size. I predict Apple will take cues from Palm, Google, and even Microsoft once the technology in battery life catches up.

One of the reason why battery life is so great on iPhone 4 is because it does less. Very static. No widgets, no live wallpapers, no Live Tiles, no Flash, no real multi-tasking, etc. Once battery life is efficient enough to have those things, I can see Apple make changes. Not a total-ripoff, but they will copy their competitors in a way. Then they will call it "revolutionary" and "magical" acting and marketing it like they invented it and the fanboys will rejoice and line up days in advance.

I see iOS looking more like old MySpace profiles. Cluttered and ugly. Do most users honestly tap 30-40 apps PER day? I have 75 apps downloaded and my iPhone 4 (vanilla form) looks very clean. I make the first page arranged like iOS 1.0 with no 4th row of icons. The rest are in the 2nd page under 12 folders. Perfectly aligned and evened out.

Hubs are a great idea. Apps is not a tap one at a time, check, and then go. Hubs can make apps work cohesively with one another and can clean out the clutter.

iOS and Android are becoming like the MySpace of mobile OSes. Clean it up.
