A couple things i'd like to see at some point are:

i'm not sure if this one is already present and just needs improving but i'd like the auto correct to be a able to look at the context the word you're misspelling is being used. i've had it several times where i've wanted to write "time" and because i was a little too fast i've ended up writing "tome" or "tone" which isn't what i wanted to write but autocorrect dose nothing for me.

IR would be pretty useful as well, i've slowly been getting interested in home automation and until tv's switch to a new kind of technology i'll never be able to control my tv from my iPhone :(

i'd also like a rotating springboard/lockscreen, i know this can be done through jailbreak but the implementation is pretty horrible to look at IMO. also while they're there they can make orientation lock work for both landscape and portrait, why they thought people only wanna lock it in portrait view is beyond me.

other than those pretty much all of the suggestions in the OP would make me happy, i have no problem with jailbreaking so aslong as they keep taking the good ideas from the jb community i'll be satisfied.

I can't imagine Apple putting IR in any iDevice. They've already got remote for the iphone and ipad working perfectly over wifi so they will probably just build on that and ignore the needs of external systems. Our best bet would be through a 3rd party accessory, maybe one of those battery cases with a build in IR transmitter.

i thought about one of those but didn't want to compromise on the looks of the phone for a relatively small benefit, if someone could make a tiny IR sender/receiver that didn't add much to the mass of the phone i'd buy it in an instant

I tried to keep my posts reasonable, but if we're talking wishes, the Mozilla Seabird is worth a look. And those last 2 posts are right. IR is important enough to warrant integration, just like something should be done about water damage. How hard can it be to make flaps to protect the openings on the phone since that's where a huge percentage of the damage comes from.

The Seabird seems like the kind of tech that won't be viable for another three years minimum. But I'll add it to the OP just in case.

What do you mean by network file browsing?

Yes, the external drive thing is on the list already.

So did anyone else get a reply from Steve Jobs ;)

I'm surprised there is no discussion about the NY times article rumoring that apple might buy EA or Sony.

A move like that signals they want to enter gaming more, so a controller shell seems all the more likely.

Either or both would be awesome. Sony's relationship with Google might be a slight problem though.

Back to the topic though. Having used my girlfriends EVO along with iphone side by side for navigation, the EVO does a better all around job. I shouldn't have to buy an extra app to get it to work the way it should have the whole time. It finds addresses faster, it works just as good as a cars GPS, it integrates well with other uses of the phone. A better buy might be Garmin. If they were buying Sony for gaming, they might be better off partnering with Nintendo since Sony seems to have already picked sides. Similar deal with Facebook. Facebook is with Microsoft. Twitter could be had for a billion and turned into a Facebook killer in Apple or Google's hands though, especially if they work to help the people who run the company do what they do better rather than hold them back the way they treat iOS.

Its probably already been listed, however:
  • External Storage
  • Network File Browsing

1) if you mean SD cards, I'd rather not. They jiggle out to often. Apple made the right decision. My girlfriend consistently has a problem with wanting to do something on her EVO and her phone not being able to find x.
2) I haven't needed that, but it would be pretty cool.

I think he meant using it to store data, like an external hdd

My ideal iOS devices as external storage would be able to sync via wifi, have a sectioned off storage section for storing files that can let me drop a file on my iphone and let the file load on my phone while I'm walking out the door, and a countdown to show me how long I should expect to have to wait for the phone to finish syncing.

My wishlist is simple:

FM radio with the extra features like the iPod nanos have.

Can we have FULL use of Bluetooth already? I can't even find apps in the jailbreak community that solves this yet. It sucks that I can't BT a photo or anything else to non-iPhones.

Infrared would be nice. Would love to have a universal remote app that I can control my entertainment center with. Paying hundreds of dollars for a stupid logitech remote is not an option for me.

The ability to create folders in Photo Albums and choose where you want your camera shots to go. Also to have the ability to move pics from differ albums.
As of now you can add folders via iTunes but you can't add new camera shots to it. And why not separated pics from vids? They should have a "Video Roll" Album.

I dedicated camera button would be nice too, but I guess Apple will try to space all the space they can.

I really think most of the stuff in the OP have to make it into the next iPhone.

What else does Apple have to offer to entice us to upgrade other than the stuff in the OP? Nothing.

Plus, Windows Phone 7 is looking better every day, and Andriod is getting better everyday. Apple needs to hurry up and fill in the remaining holes in it's OS.

I think at this point most of the ideas have been thrown out there. It might be worth adding one of those polls where you can choose all that apply so that we can see which features people care about the most. Useful information if Steve ever reads it.

I read through you're post (well, most of it, it was very long) and noticed a few things:

A Button to kill all multitasking apps at once to instantly free up RAM

The phone does that itself when it needs the RAM, don't overcomplicate thing for no reason.

4 inch screen - The overwhelming majority of people here WANT a bigger iPhone display, as conclusively demonstrated here... https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/918519/

While I have recently purchases an HTC HD2 to play around with android and love the big screen, many people can not use a phone that large. Also, 79 people in no way form an overwhelming majority. That's one poll in one thread on one website. It doesn't even take into account all the users on the site, nevermind the millions of iPhone users around the world.

Bluetooth 4.0 with file sharing and/or Lightpeak,

I have yet to see something in stores using bluetooth 3.0, and come to think of it, who uses bluetooth anymore? (I'm sure a lot of people do, I just never see anyone use it these days)

3D Screen akin to the Nintendo 3DS (you won't need to wear glasses to see it in 3D). Would enable 3D gaming and 3D movie viewing.

This sounds very very gimmicky and average at best. They only just increased the screen resolution, I think it'll be a while before they go messing with that again.

RFID to let employers use the phone as an id badge, to let us use it as a credit card, pay toll machines etc.

I can see this being (as Jobs put it) "a bag of hurt". What if your phone gets stolen? Or lost? Is it really that hard to carry a phone AND a wallet? I mean, pants have 2 front pockets for a reason.

They actually have plenty. they could make it a little thinner and a little lighter, change nothing else, and people would still buy it. Offer it in a new colour? BAM! 3 million iPhones sold! The user experience is excellent and that counts for a lot.

OS Wide implementation of voice control, to allow full voice control functionality. For example: Saying 'Safari open' and the app opens, then 'Enter address xyz' and safari takes you to the page. Voice to text, natively as opposed to using Dragon Dictation, would be nice for texting and long emails too.

Isn't that the same thing as improved notifications?

It is, but I do think its useful to point to what style of notification improvement you are looking for at least to give direction. My hope is to have something that doesn't interrupt what I'm doing but is easy to find what I'm looking for if I missed it.

Hell yes

led screen, ability to add the magic trackpad to it, iphones for every carrier, (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon) so you don't have to switch to get the iPhone,
some sort of more functionality with Macs and iPhones, maybe recieve calls from your MB(P) so you don't have to pick up your phone, simply click and talk.

Longer USB cable that you can purchase seperatly.
more colors. atleast product (RED)
dual flash?
integrate with other services.... Apple TV, play games on your TV and use you iPod/iPhone as a controller
external battery indicator with customizable colors like on the MBP, (but the MBP doesnt have other colors)
slightly rounded edges. i noticed at the apple store with the iPT4 and iP4, they don't seem as natrual in your hand as the 3g ipods and iphones did.
