I'd really like to see widgets and the ability to change keyboards to use Swiftkey (my favorite) or Swype.

bigger screen + 5Ghz Wifi support!

My current iPhone4 can't connect to my (or any) 5ghz Wifi network, :(, unlike my iPad.
(and no, switching to 2.4Ghz is not an option due to over-use of that frequency in my neighborhood, which causes distortions)

Why is Windows Phone left out as an alternative? WP8 could end up being very competitive against iOS and Android.

NFC - The standard response is "people aren't using that enough right now". My response is "Once iPhones have it everyone will be using it".

More RAM - would make browsing multiple web pages really nice. I agree it's a spec that most iPhone users will overlook though.

Battery - Can't do a whole lot more with the current iPhone footprint, but as it gets bigger, so does that battery life.

Processor - Depending on what iOS6 brings to the plate, a faster processor might be nice. But even if not, a faster under clocked processor (read more efficient) would always be welcome. Think better battery life here.

High Res FFC - This could use an improvement. Admittedly, probably not a huge deal for most people. I Skype twice a week with family overseas. A nice camera is very nice.

Siri - One that actually works would be nice. Yes, I know this statement gets overused, but I legitimately get the "I am sorry I can't help you right now" response too frequently. Conservatively I would say 25% of the time, but realistically it's probably a lot closer to 50%. I am not even asking for more tasks than Siri can currently do. I am just asking that Siri be able to do what it was sold to me to do upwards of 90% of the day.

Imagine it's September and Tim Cook is on stage announcing the new iPhone. If he listed the above and nothing else, this forum would go mad with "worst iPhone release eva" etc.

Better battery life would definitely be good.

A boost for RAM and CPU would be nice for heavier sites.

Siri with more international support, although this is more software than iPhone 5 specific.

And that's how it should be. NFC is something few people care about. More RAM and faster processor are not really needed right now because the iPhone isn't slow. Siri: 90% of the countries where Apple sells the iPhone isn't even supported so small improvements there is a non-thing to most people. And than we have a higher-res front facing camera: while I would appreciate it, the onliest time I have actually seen people video calling with an iPhone was when they just bought the iPhone.

So in short:
- NFC, few people care about
- RAM and processor, nice but no one would see it as a big upgrade because the iPhone is already quite fast.
- Siri, 90% of the counties where the iPhone is sold isn't even supported so a lot of people won't care about this either.

That leaves the better battery life as the one big thing in his list. Would you buy a new iPhone for $600+ just because the battery lasts an hour longer?

I believe at the moment, the consumers are voting with their pocketbook, plus with MS stating that no WP7 phones will run WP8, most tech savy consumers are avoiding windows phones completely. The Jury is still out whether WP8 will gain enough traction to seriously compete with iOS and android

Perhaps. It is clear to me that people want the phone to look completely different. The 4S isn't different enough from the 4 for these people. They want to be using the phone in public and for it to be clear that they have the top of the line model. People are like that. Silly, but true.

This is it. Many of us have had iPhone 4 the day it came out, and it has been with us now for over 2 years. iPhone 4S looks identical. I suspect Apple had intended to release a newly designed iPhone by July, but it didn't happen. They don't want people out of contract (like all of us who got the iPhone 4 on day 1) migrating to another cool phone. The longer it takes to come out with a new iPhone, the more people will migrate.

I also am hoping that there is more of a redesign than what was leaked (my avatar). iPhone to iPhone 4 was a big design change. I'd like to see the same for iPhone 5.

As far back as the original iPhone, I was convinced Apple would release an 'iPhone Pro'. Apple are all about being seen - using an Apple product is a huge status statement for a lot of people (perhaps most?).

The iPhone has become arguably the most common smartphone there is - businessmen, kids, A-list celebrities, Z-list celebrities, the unemployed etc. If I'm paying a premium price, I don't want to have something that everyone else has.

Plus, most people have their iPhone in a case and, from the front facia alone, the iPhone has barely changed at all since the original iPhone. So, in a social situation, my peers wouldn't be able to tell the difference between my 64GB 4S and my mate's 8GB iPhone 4. As sad as that is, I think this is how a lot of people feel.

It still surprises me Apple haven't gone for the two-tier iPhone as they have in their other product lines (Macbook/Macbook Pro, iMac/Mac Pro, iPod/iPod Touch)

That's the thing. You aren't paying a premium price. You are paying what every other high end smart phone costs, basically. And there are a lot of them. But I get it. Like I said, plenty of people are that way with more things than just smart phones.

I am a big fan of the droid incredibles 4 inch screen. Its the sweet spot for me.

Everytime I try android I always go back to iOS so that doesn't seem like an option for me at this point. I Enjoy messing around with my brothers androids but as a daily driver I prefer my iPhone. That being said I am hoping for a 4inch LTE iPhone this year. It would be a welcomed change.

That's a fair point. Maybe what I meant was buying into a premium brand.

Although, spec-for-spec, I'm sure my iPhone 4S was a lot more expensive than my Samsung S2. (although maybe I benefitted from the reduced price of the S2 rather than the fixed price of apple products).

All I am saying is if you want exclusivity, go buy the Lamborghini Android device. It's gold plated with crocodile skin, and will set you back a couple grand. THERE you are buying exclusivity. For a device that's $200 on contract, you are buying none of that; you are buying the world's largest app store with the most developers, most secure/reliable operating system, and a sexy looking device to boot. The iPhone is the best selling smartphone (or near it) on the planet. Expecting exclusivity is a little foolish I think.

I'm not sure what people are expecting in the hardware department. There is nothing really new they can add besides just better components. Most of what new is to come will be coming from a software end.

I'll be buying the new iPhone no matter what. The new bigger screen is kind of meh for me. From what I've been reading it will just be taller which kind of throws me off of it. Them adding NFC would be no real use to me. A quadcore CPU would be nice, I guess, not really sure what would really utilize it. More RAM would be really nice. A "better" camera wouldn't hurt either. LTE will be great, of course. (Especially since I'm with Sprint. unlimited 4g woot woot. They still don't have LTE down here in New Orleans sadly though.)

One thing I would like is for them to make it easier to jailbreak. (Yeah right..)

I just want the device to be spectacular. A lot of new useful features, LTE, faster processor and more ram, and a bigger screen. It'll be interesting to see this "long" design unfold.

The screen will be the "Deal or no deal" for me. No increase in screen size and there is no reason at all for me to replace my (still very new) 4S.

I'd also like to see Apple get rid of THE most troublesome item on the phone....That home button...It's the cause of so many returns it's laughable, and a software solution would be far more elegant and would also allow for that screen size increase.

I have a pretty cool situation with my girlfriend that allows me to get each new iPhone that comes out. I switch back and forth between our upgrades, and give her my previous iPhone. I have had every generation of iPhone thus far including two iPhone 3G's because I dropped one, and I currently have a white and a black iPhone 4s (Personal and Work).

I hate android and will not be switching. My first phone for work was the Galaxy SII, and I did not like it.

The features I am looking for mainly are LTE and a bigger screen. However, not this only make the phone a little over 0.5 cm taller crap. I am sorry, but that is such a crappy way to give us a "4 inch" screen. I don't want a 5th row of icons, not at all. How does that make the bigger screen feel justified? Its not, it does not make sense to me at all. I think it sucks, and it will be the first time where I am wondering what the hell were they thinking.

Also, a better battery is always good. I think the iPhone 4/4s have way better batteries than most android phones. However, I credit most of that to iOS itself because of Android's awful task management. The fact that the new iPad has LTE and kept the battery life spec of the iPad 2... keeps me hopeful for when they launch an LTE iPhone, the battery will actually be able to make use of it. I have so many friends with LTE phones, yet they NEVER use it because it destroys their battery.

It would be amazing if they could have the battery long lasting like the Razr Maxx on the new iPhone!

I agree that it can't just be a minor update. The hardware needs to be major or else alot of people will be mad. I know I for one will most likely switch to android if that happens

i feel like hardware wise, they have always made a good jump. 4---4s was single core to dual core----now we should get quad core
