I'd be so mad if Apple releases the upgraded 9.7 iPad pro with A10X and 4 GB RAM just 6 months later. What are the chances of that happening? Though obviously we cannot tell, it's Apple, duh. But does it make sense?

I think you're better off just living your life and not getting upset over Apple coming out with new products

I think id prefer a fall 2016 update to the Pros and to then release each year with updated processors. Pros with X series and normal iPad with non X parts? Ipad mini losing the mini designation and just known as iPad like the two Pros? then there would only be four tablets, two Pro and two non-pro.

Maybe the focus would turn to greater power efficiency, rather than performance, so that eventually we have 15 to 20 hours battery usage on a single charge.

You're one of those in an iteration loop that has you never buying an iPad cause you're always looking for more.

Me, I'm going to enjoy the hell out of my brand spanking new 9.7" iPP, come Thursday.

Wait, I bought the very last iPad air (2) have tried out iPad mini 4 (which I returned) and have had numerous before that lol Hardly someone thats never buying an iPad

I still haven't decided whether I will go for the Pro just yet because Im not sure if its worth it in my case just now and I do most my work on a surface 4. For what its worth Im still very much enjoying my iPad air 2 and my retina macbook, which may about to get an update but Im really not that bothered as for me it works great as it is.

Me after I just bought an iPad Pro a few months ago "there's no way Apple is gonna release another iPad in just a few months"

Well, the Pro 9.7" isn't exactly a Pro in every sense of the word.

Aside from the 256gb option, you're safe.

Very interesting results of the poll, most seem to think a 2017 release. I think it would be great in some ways for the iPads to be updated in spring... spreads releases around the year

It really feels like Apple is trolling us with their product lines. It's like, if things don't make sense then nobody can predict what we do next.

The only improvements in the new 9.7" aren't even a big deal. A better tablet camera? A screen that automagically screws up colors? "Feature Envy" shouldn't even exist over such cases minor improvements but when you call two products the same name then it's hard not to wonder "when will the two iPad Pros teach feature parity."

It's funny because using the name Air3 wouldve solved everything because a "consumer aimed" tablet with improved camera and light sensitive screen (in the same Air shell) would make sense. They could've even left the existing Pro and Air3 untouched for another 18mo. But because they named them both Pro then the product line looks uneven and already due for an update.

Dude I don't even know why they releases the smaller pro now. That last keynote was just strange. Why not just wait until the fall when they're going to have their usual iPad keynote anyway? Release it then. And why update us on Apple Watch bands? And to tell us about 9.3? It's like a keynote devoted to minor news releases

It is strange. Actually the whole release cycle for iPads is quite mixed now, almost wonder if they're trying to get away from a strict annual update. Also, I think the October events are done. Seems evident that they're moving to a Mar-June-Sep setup for 3 events per year.

This is such a crazy theory I think there might actually be something to it. Occam's razor doesn't apply here anymore. What makes sense doesn't happen and the predictable nature of Apple is right out the freaking window. What if they know people hold off on iPads until the next predictable event? What if they wanted to throw the schedule into chaos so nobody would even bother asking "is it safe to buy now?' And they just buy now because nobody knows anything. Or maybe I'm just talking out my butt. And what if cheese wiz is some big conspiracy to throw the idea of cheese into disarray? What if "cheese" isn't what we think it is and we actually don't know anything?

A screen that automagically screws up colors?

This made me laugh way more than it should've. Imagine them advertising it like that

I like that theory. Honestly they very well may be just attempting to expand the iPad line into multiple families, and not being tied themselves to such strict schedules. Get updated models out once they're ready.

Actually, I'm a big fan of this approach - you know you're buying the latest when you enter the store - never mind all this should I or shouldn't I stuff.

iPad 3 owners say hello

I owned an iPad 3 with cellular and had absolutely NO problems with it - it worked flawlessly and went half-way around the world more than once.

The problem with the randomness of release schedules is that Apple fans are creature of habit.

Breaking the annual upgrade cycle is exactly what happened to many iPad owners. Many of us used "iPhone Logic" to justify annual upgrades of our iPads. But when the iPad 4 was released "too early" or the Air2 DIDNT get upgraded "on schedule" then we kept using our crusty old iPads and realized "Hey, this thing is good enough. So why do I need to bother upgrading?".

Apple makes good products but Apple is no longer an innovator or risk taker. And without "Hype" and "Habit" then Apples "Annual Upgrade" business model falls apart.

I guess what I'm trying to say Is that maybe Apple isn't trolling us. Maybe they're just a mess. And also, Cheese Wiz isn't cheese.

Neither. I think they are moving to a 1.5 year cycle on refreshing the iPad, closer to the Mac cycle. My guess is they will refresh the large iPad Pro in early 2017, followed by the 9.7 in late 2017, both with force touch and better chips.

I think the Air line is gone. It can't be better than the pro line and would have to start with a $400 price tag. I think the Air 2 will live on until the next iPad announcement and then the iPad Pro will take its spot. I also really doubt they announce a new iPad Pro 9.7 this year and potentially not even next year. Just my best guess.

#1. Keep an eye open for when Production of the iPad Air 2 stops
#2. Look to see if major retailers are re-ordering iPad Air 2s

These are the best signs of an upcommung new iPad. Next iPad Pro will be late 2017 and 9.7 Pro will be early 2018 they will follow the schedule they have laid out. Pro Devices will be on a 2 year cycle.

In fairness, that's kinda how it used to be. iPads in March/April, iPhones in June/July and iPod Touch in October/November.

Does anyone think they will change the Apple pencil? Redesign it or make an all metal version? I really like the surface pen and the feel of the metal. I wish apple offered something similar.

Are there any third party pens that will work with the Pro?

Let's be honest with ourselves here for a minute. Apple isn't making iPads, or release schedules, for those of us hanging out on the message boards, fretting over every technical release and point update for iOS - they're making iPads for the "normal" customer. The average "normal" customer buys an iPad when they want/need one, not based on speculation about release cycles. They MAY hold off buying one if the big news outlets are talking about a new one coming out in a few weeks, but otherwise they don't care.

I'm certain the release for the two different Pro models, as well as any other product, is stratigally planned - getting the iPad Brand back in the news.

When are they going to release a new one? When they have one ready.
Why only 2 GB RAM? Just like any other company with products, there are whiteboards at Apple HQ with a target cost number and a date with a list of features that get crossed off to meet the date/price.

With the iPad 3 - I'm sure they wanted to get the Retina iPad out. They knew lightning was coming, but decided it would be better to release the iPad 3, then an upgraded iPad 4 later. To drive the point home, they didn't take to calling it "iPad 3" or "iPad 4" - they were both just "the new iPad".

Apple makes good products but Apple is no longer an innovator or risk taker. And without "Hype" and "Habit" then Apples "Annual Upgrade" business model falls apart.

We're going to drag out that old chestnut eh?
People who say this fall into one of two categories: (1) Under their description of "innovation", Apple never was an innovator, or (2) They don't really know what "innovation" is.

Also, your assertion about "hype" and "habit" being the main driving force behind Apple's products is wrong. Again, regular people buying iPads outnumber the Apple die hardcore buyers (those that upgrade often). By a LOT.
