I'm shocked that I came to find no posts about Crosby's mega-deal/Pittsburgh's potentially huge headache. No one? I wonder what insurance is on that 12 year monster contract.

Or Quick locked up for the next decade? Actually 11 years, since it starts after the next season. As much as I love Quick, I'm a bit weary of goalie deals that long. Even 5 is probably on the high side.

Opposite end of the contract length spectrum - Rask only re-upping for 1 year? Will still be a RFA next year, but was expecting a nice 3-4 year deal for him. Guess they'll wait and see how he carries the load full time.

I blame twitter.

Pittsburgh is taking a huge risk.

LA is taking a reasonable, calculated risk. Quick is a keeper.

The Bruins are basically giving Rask a tryout. If he does well this year, they'll lock him up longterm.

What about the Hal Gill signing?!?! That's big news. HUGE. :p

There are two questions-should these contracts be allowed, and is any player actually worth what is essentially a lifetime contract.

I have never had a problem with these contracts-if a team wants to do that, it is their money, their player and their property.

In both cases today, both teams needed to lock-up the player long term (in the Penguins case, lock up him for so long that no one will ever have the chance to even talk to him about leaving).

Quick's deal will depend on how he performs. Should he continue his solid peformance, then he will be worth it. Should he go like Lunongo......

They must know suter isnt coming back.

Pittsburgh may be taking a risk, but it is a risk they must take. Just imagine what crosby could get if he somehow became UFA or RFA-it would be a 29 team bidding war.

Two moves I would like see.
Parise to Boston or detroit ( Boston does have any $$ tho.
Luongo to Florida

I hope Detroit gets Suter, but doesn't significantly overpay to do so. I really don't want Parise. He's just all right and going to be grossly overpaid due to the terrible market out there.

I always thought Parise was overrated;) But he would look good on the same line as Giroux:rolleyes::D

He's better than just "all right". You have to remember the team he's been playing for all these years. A team that hasn't been known for offense.

His career numbers are very impressive for being on the Devils:

If Parise was on the Red Wings, he would blow up.

It's like Sundin.....if he was on a talented team for the bulk of his career, his numbers would be even better than they were.

This just in....Jordan Staal has signed a 10 year $60 million deal with the Hurricanes. Same deal that was offered to him by the Pens, right?
And Ryan Smyth reupped with the Oilers for two years.

for anyone who cant get nhl network or tsn, nhl.com has a stream of nhl network which is showing tsn free agency frenzy

My first reaction to the Wings signing Gustavsson was "What in the world? Why?" Now thinking about it and seeing the terms, I'm all for it.

Two years at $1.5m per is absolutely nothing. He's already on par or an upgrade over Joey Mac and has a significantly higher upside. A different goalie coach, a new city, no psychotic Toronto media, and time to work behind a young work horse in Howard might just be the ideal mix for a revival.

I would be surprised if Suter agrees to a deal today. I think Parise could, but Suter will definitely wait and weigh his options.

I still think Gustavsson has a lot of upside. It just didn't work out in Toronto because of his heath issues and because of the lack of consistent play from the team. He played well for a stretch this season, and how did Wilson reward him? By putting Reimer back in. His confidence was probably shot to hell. I think he'll do well on the Wings. Nice pickup.

And then his agent has come out saying no decision yet and probably none today. Not going to get too excited until it's all said and done (see: Avalanche Twitter mistake).

Oh, I know. According to what I read, an announcement would come tomorrow.

I dont know who said it on twitter but someone said the avs "elkundnd" it..

I read it from a few people I think......MacKenzie, Dreger, and Kypreos all tweeted it IIRCC. None of them said it was definite, they all said it was rumored.

I'm not very happy with the Leafs moves so far (signing Jay McClement to a two year deal)......people think it's a build-up to a couple of big trades though. So we'll see.

Your Sharks seem to be standing pat too.....

we actually picked up Adam Burish
http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_20984938/sharks-sign-f-adam-burish-4-year-contract

overpaying aside, it is a good pick-up. We need guys with edge and nasty and Burish has that. He also is good on the PK and since ours sucked that helps too.

Oh and anyone who calls Christina Pronger an idiot is welcome to play for us....

We also lost Torrey Mitchell to the Minnestoa Shar(er wild).

Does anyone here actually think Suter or parise is worth 12 mill A YEAR??? I mean that would make them more highly paid than sid and ovie.
And neither Suter or Parise is that good.

Pretty sure the only thing I've seen about $12m/year for those two was their signing bonuses - maximum upfront guaranteed money to entice them to sign. The salary would be less than that.

And no. Sort of going back to my overrated comment earlier. Parise is a great player (not elite), but has incredible intangibles. He's worth a lot of money - not truckloads of money like that. Same with Suter, to be honest, which is why I don't want the Wings to break the bank paying for him. Huge signing bonus? Whatever. As long as the cap hit is manageable so we can put some other pieces around him. And I prioritize a lockdown defenseman over a great/non-elite forward with intangibles, so I don't even want Parise, because getting both would really mess with our cap space or just getting Parise wouldn't address the blue line issue.

I agree....I don't think that they're worth that much either.

GMs get friggin' crazy on July 1.

Here's what Burkie has to say about that:

“We hand out contracts with unrealistic values and with unrealistic term,” Burke said of NHL teams on free agency. “When you’re in a hard cap system, that bites you right in the butt at some point. …

“I think if you look carefully at the impact players from July 1 have, you’ll see it’s not what people think it is.”

Had a couple of classes with Burish, and watched him play for 4 years. Wish him all the best in SJ.

Day 2: Totally boring.

This year proves more than any that the NHL should consider the NBA week prior to July 1 courtship period. These are huge decisions for organizations, as well as the rest/most of a player's career and shouldn't be rushed in a day.

Random thought: wtf Calgary? I don't mind the Hudler signing - the amount and term isn't bad at all. It's competitive/expected based on performance and the market. However, you are now #2 in payroll, with double digit no trade/no movement clause players on a roster full of average and/or aging. Say what?

I would not call Gary Bettman using his judicial power to overrule Shannahan and reduce the Torres suspension boring-I call it admitting they cannot police their own league and can't even decide on what to do with clear, unrepentant reckless re-offenders.

Now that Torres got his reduction, every single player will appeal their suspension saying if Torres can get a reduction, anyone can

Completely disagree. 25 games was pretty much unprecedented, especially when you consider there was 13 playoff games (and whatever you want to count them as - 1.5 to 3x the worth of a regular season game). The hit alone was worth 5-10 games on a normal day, but then I think you double it based on his history. That's well below 25. I think 15-20 would've been more than sufficient since the primary goal - keeping him out of the playoffs - was met. This was Bettman extending a (shoddy in my opinion) olive branch to the NHLPA, saying, "Hey, look, we take appeals and lower punishments, see!"

It would've been a non-story if there was anything but nobodies and average Joes signing today.

I agree Bettman is trying to save face with the PA. I guess what I am really saying is that Torres has had multiple run-ins with the league-none of which have deterred his behavior. Was Torres an easy target to throw the book at? Absolutely. That said, if this was his 2nd or 3rd run-in, I would have no problems with the reduction. But this was FIFTH. At some point, someone has to throw down the hammer and do something.

And 25 is not unprecedented-
