Agree 100% about the home bar. At the very least, the home bar should disappear during use, like how Safari hides the navigation options. My biggest hope would be that it disappears entirely in an iOS update.
it disappears when it makes sense to disappear.

My take on the notch:

- I actually prefer the design (vertically). It gives it a futuristic look when in use. My status icons have their only little “places”

- Landscape mode the notch is horrendous. Apple really needs to think about adding a black software bezel when in landscape. I will never get “used to it” in this situation.

- Videos and pictures with black borders around them look fine, because OLED is true black. A non-issue. Like the slightly larger size of my media compared to my 8.

I use my phone mainly in vertical mode. The only time I use it in landscape is when I’m accessing my media. In that situation, it’s a non issue. If you use your phone in landscape mode constantly, I’d be very hesitant with the X.

I thought it would be a serious experience diminishing factor when I first saw it.

In normal use I don’t really notice it. Your eyes aren’t especially even drawn to it.

Even when watching YouTube vids it’s not really distracting.

I’m using safari right now. It doesn’t disappear and it makes sense to disappear. Why do I need a bar to show me how to go home? Do I also need a bar to tell me how to get to the control center? I think the bar is necessary, but there should be an option to disable it.

When viewing websites it does not, unless I’m doing something wrong.
maybe not when in portrait..

in landscape it will go away after a few seconds if you're not scrolling etc.. (but for clarity.. i don't know exactly when or what are the determining factors.. so far, i just know it goes away when watching video and viewing pictures)

but for example:

the bar..

I agree on the home bar. I also notice that the TV app DONE button sits under the left “ear” of the notch beneath the time. Clearly a glitch that will be patched.

My blind. Sigh or got his iPhone X. Been feeling for the notch but so far complete fail.:confused:

The glass screen protectors seem to have a cutout for the notch (mine included). That will help find the notch.:p

Problem is how they use the notch. The time and battery and network symbols need to be recessed more all the way to the top. The way it is now it looks like they are protruding into the screen and like that area isn’t effectively used.

Also, apps should simply stop below the notch. Perhaps draw a thin grey line at the level of the notch or make it a different shade. That area is useless for apps of any kind and should simply be reserved for the phone status symbols.

As I expected it totally disappeared into the UI for me. FWIW, even when I fired up a movie (Arrival, 4K/HDR/DV), while it was "present" when running full screen, that movie (like many movies filmed with modern equipment) is a 2.35:1 a/r, so running full screen it's still not wide enough (iPX is ~2.2:1), so it was better to switch it into letterbox format, which scaled the width down to where the S/C/A section wasn't even a factor.

Ever since they announced the design the notch idea never bothered me (no, not just saying it now, I’ve said it all along) and in use now that I have it my opinion hasn’t changed.

I don’t notice it for the vast majority of the time, just like every iPhone before it my attention is generally the middle of the screen. The only time I really notice it’s there is not surprisingly when I look at the time or battery status.

So far the only thing bugging me is the YouTube app not going full screen. Yet if I watch a YouTube video in Safari, it does. I’m sure they’ll fix it before long.

I never expected it to be a problem, and if anything it’s less obstructive than I thought it would be. I don’t even notice it during normal usage. My biggest concern would have been that it covers up part of videos in full screen, but you’re already missing out on content with the curved edges anyway.

The only thing that annoys me is when the volume is covered up by the notch while you’re adjusting it. Makes it feel a big inelegant and un-Apple-like.

I like how most iPhone X users try to convince themselves they don‘t notice the notch which hides a portion of content in photos, videos and games except when it‘s not and you get huge virtual bezels instead. Oh, I forgot about the home bar which also crosses out text in apps, settings, websites, documents, etc. What a compromised device.

I never thought it was bad, per se, but it’s exaxtly what I expected. It’s most bothersome when playing back video, though I can just sacrifice screen size for letterbox.

I suppose the alternative would have been just nothing up there (ie a bezel). The way it is, you get useful info like time, signal strength, and battery in a space that isn’t using any screen real estate. I don’t dig that the battery doesn’t have a percentage option.
