that's the same phone as the X.. it is the X.
or-- how is the time/status being display in this supposed notch-free version?

[edit] what @D.T. said
Of course it is the X. It's a pure software thing. The horns would be reserved for status icons and time, and the actual space used for apps would be limited to the space below. The horns would always have a black background. Of course the display may need a slightly different aspect ratio to fully utilize this, but at least videos and full screen games would not have a frickin notch in them.

As ever, don't like the notch, don't get an iPhone X. Plenty of other phones out there, it's called choice.

I think that's what bothers me the most. In my minds eye, if this design was presented to Steve Jobs, he'd thrown it back at the designers face. I don't think this would have flew by the old apple. The Tim Cook Apple seems to make some design decisions that are un-apple like imo.

I'm not terribly worked up about the notch, I'm not liking it, but dislike is tepid at best. Some people really hate it, others don't mind it. I'm in the don't mind it for the most part.

Agreed. The lack of symmetry is eye catching in landscape mode. It's down right ugly in my opinion. I don't mind it at all in portrait mode though. If I could actually afford one I may change my opinion based on experience from long time use, but how it looks in landscape is off-putting to me and I'm not sure I could get used to it.

Of course, just sharing my opinion. I'm not completely against the notch, but I think it could have been handled better.

As for choice... There's not that many good phones out there according to my standards. For me to even be remotely interested in a phone it would have to get regular security updates and promised OS updates for 3+ years.

So far the choise is the Google Pixel 2, which is not available in many countries, and the iPhones. Now, the iPhone is available in tiny screen, huge body and now the X which is a good balance between body and screen size. The first iPhone I would personally consider. The price and use of OLED means I won't get it though. I would probably get used to the notch. I'm excited to see what Apple will bring out next year. Maybe that will be the iPhone that will make me leave Android, at least as my primary mobile OS.

I was so strongly opposed to the notch from the moment they showed the phone off. “How stupid!” I kept thinking. Then I decided to go check the phone out in-store, and........ I hardly noticed it. In fact, I came away liking the phone, which was a complete 180 from how I felt beforehand (those who know me irl will tell you this NEVER happens, so it’s kind of a big deal LOL). Not long after I got home I got on Twitter and ordered it (T-Mobile’s help line is awesome that way haha).

i’m sorry but you’re describing the X almost exactly.

also, if you don’t want the notch in your video, don’t zoom them all the way to the edge and there will be a black bar filling the ears as your photo shows

That's a terrible poll. It doesn't have a good selection for "I knew the notch was going to be awful and it is." Neutral doesn't convey that.

those people are probably choosing #2, no?
Nope. You could have expected it to be bad and it was bad. Technically that answer would fall under neutral within this poll. Saying Yes means it is worse than you thought. It's just a bad poll.

I almost didn’t buy it because of the notch. To be honest, I don’t even notice it. I think the screen size / aspect ratio “hides it.” I barely notice it.

If the notch bothers you (or just stands out a bit too much), but you haven't spent significant time with the phone yet, there's a very good chance your mind would change completely after some time with it. Mine did. I'm reading the same accounts from many others. The X has turned out to be the best device of any kind I've ever owned. i just love this thing.

The biggest problem with the notch starting off is we are not used to it. It's really different. Much like the lack of a home button. But that changes quickly. The notch seems to "fall into place" with the overall phone design after a little time.

When watching video, I go ahead and zoom in. I want video to fill the screen right to the edges. The notch does not deter me from this. I can see how why Apple showed it that way in the keynote.
